Development of New NLO Borate Crystal $>Gd_xY_{1-x}COB$

  • The interest in the use of borate crystals in ultraviolet(UV) nonlinear optics(NLO) has increased because all solid-stste UV lasers obtained with NLO are in highly demand. Much effort has been spent on developing borates series, such as{{{{ { beta -BaB }_{2 } {O }_{4 }(BBO), {LiB }_{ 3}{O }_{5 }(LBO)}}}} and{{{{{ CsKiB}_{6 }{O }_{10 }(CLBO)}}}} in this decade. Recently another new borate crystals, {{{{{ YCa}_{4 }O({BO }_{3 })_{3}}}}} and{{{{{Gd }_{x }{Y }_{1-x }{Ca }_{4 }O({BO }_{ 3})({Gd }_{x }{Y }_{1-x }COB)}}}} have been developed by the present authors. Here, the growth and NLO properties of YCOB and {{{{ {Gd }_{ x} {Y }_{ 1-x} }}}}CO B crystal are reported and their properties discussed in relation to those of other nonlinear optical crystals, such as LBO.

  • 3차 비선형광학 재료를 설계하기 위해 단성분 산화물에서의 산소의 평균 전자분극률과 광학 염기도를 굴절율, 에너지 갭의 각기 다른 물성을 통해 산출하였다. Lorentz-Lornez식과 Duffy 의 반실험식을 도입하여 산소의 평균 전자분극율과 광학 염기도를 두가지 다른 물성으로부터 계산하여 비교하였다. 처음으로 독립적인 초기값에서 계산한 각각의 산소의 평균 전자분극률과 광학 염기도 사이에 좋은 상응관계가 있음을 확인하였다.

Nonlinear Optical Properties and Photoluminescence of CuCl Nanocrystals Embedded in Silica Glass

  • Linear and nonlinear optical properties of CuCl nanocrystals in silica glass have been studied using low temperature absorption, degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM), and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Assuming a spherical shape, effective radius of the CuCl quantum dots was estimated to be 2.5 nm, which is obtained from low temperature absorption data. The DFWM experiment was performed in 380-386 nm wavelength region, and the diffracted signal was measured as a function of wavelength with 1.0 nm interval. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurement was also carried out at 77 K to obtain the time response of CuCl nanocrystals. The experimental results on the large third order nonlinear optical of CuCl quantum dots are explained in terms of crystal size and oscillator strength of quantum spheres.

  • Optical parametric oscillator(OPO) has been used to generate coherent and tunable laser source with birefringent phase-matching technique in various nonlinear materials. In birefringent phase-matching, the output wavelength is controlled with angle or temperature tuning of the refractive index. However these tuning methods have several limitations such as restriction of tuning wavelength due to reasonable angular and temperature tuning ranges, Poynting vector walk-off which limits the interaction length, and thermal stabilization time.   • The electrical and optical properties of the annealed $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal with congruently melting composition and MgO or ZnO doped $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal grown by the FZ method. The electrical and optical properties such as electrical conductivity, dielectric constant (Curie temperature), electro-mechanical coupling factor, optical transmittance and refractive indices of the grown crystals were measured and the nonlinear refractive indices of the grown crystals were calculated theoretically. The doping effects of MgO and ZnO were investigated by comparing the electrical and optical properties of the undoped $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystal and those of the $LiNbO_{3}$ single crystals doped with MgO or ZnO.

  • The growth characteristics and properties of large size $SrAlF_5$ single crystals are described and compared with those of $BaMgF_4$. Transmission spectra in the vacuum ultraviolet wavelength region indicate a high transparency of $SrAlF_5$ (about 90% without considering surface reflection loses) down to 150 nm, on contrast to the optical loses observed for $BaMgF_4$. The ferroelectric character of $SrAlF_5$ is evidenced by the reversal of the spontaneous polarization in a hysteresis loop. The higher potential of $SrAlF_5$ in comparison with $BaMgF_4$ for the realization of all-solid-state lasers in the ultraviolet wavelength region by the quasi-phase matching (QPM) technique is pointed out. $SrAlF_5$, besides a higher grade of transparency, shows a nonlinear effective coefficient similar to that of quartz and uniaxial nature, on contrast to the one order smaller nonlinear coefficient and biaxial character of $BaMgF_4$. The refractive index of $SrAlF_5$ from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared wavelength region is measured by the minimum deviation method. The Sellmeier and Cauchy coefficients are obtained from the fits to the curves of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices, and the grating period for the first order QPM is estimated as a function of the wavelength. The poling periodicity for 193 nm SHG from 386 nm is $4{\mu}m$.

  • Compact solid-state blue laser have great potential for use in optical data storage, laser beam printing, particle countering, reprographics, holography, and fluorescent bioanalysis. We report recent progresses in qualities of LiB3O5 and K3Li2(TaxNb1-x)5O15 nonlinear crystals which are essential in manufacturing bulk-type blue SHG devices. We also review newly developed violet-blue laser, 20 mW output, using intracavity frequency doubling of a diode laser pumped Cr:LiSrAlF6 laser with low loss LiB3O5 crystal as a frequency doubler.

  • In this paper, we carry out the simulation for an optimal solution of one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal structure using Genetic algorithm, and show the proposed method to apply for photonic transistors. Unlike a conventional steepest descent method for an optimization, the proposed method based on Genetic Algorithm has advantages for finding out excellent solutions without any analytic forms, which can easily apply to other applications. Also, as several solutions around global minimum solution can be obtained, it is very good optimization tool to give us the patterns about the optimal structure of a photonic crystal transistor. To design an all-optical filter transistor, Neural network algorithm is firstly performed for an initial design and then Genetic Algorithm is finally used to get the optimal solution. From the simulation of one-dimensional photonic crystal transistor, 27dB of the switching On/Off ratio is obtained.

Microstructure and Third Order Optical Nonlinearities of Ion-Implanted and Thermally Annealed $Cu-SiO_2$ Thin Films

  • The crystal structure and optical properties of copper nanoparticles, prepared in fused silica by ion-implantation and subsequent heat-treatment, were characterized by X-ray, TEM, linear absorption, and degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique. The X-ray data show fcc lattice structure of the nanocrystals and their size was measured as 8-20 nanometer by high resolution TEM. Using DFWM, the third-order nonlinear optical coefficient of the Cu-SiO2 thin films was measured as 0.4-1.1×10-8 esu in the surface plasmon resonance absorption region (540-570 nm).
