  • Metal nanoparticle doped glasses have various applications such as use as photochromic media for optical disk data storage, the fabrication of optical waveguides and waveguide lasers, use as all-optical switches due to their nonlinear optical properties, as well as use in the color glass recycling industry. OptiNeural System for Optical Pattern Classification

  • An OptiNeural system is developed for optical pattern classification. It is a novel hybrid system which consists of an optical processor and a multilayer neural network. It takes advantages of two dimensional processing capability of an optical processor and nonlinear mapping capability of a neural network. The optical processor with a binary phase only filter is used as a preprocessor for feature extraction and the neural network is used as a decision system through mapping. OptiNeural system is trained for optical pattern classification by use of a simulated annealing algorithm. Its classification performance for grey tone texture patterns is excellent, while a conventional optical system shows poor classification performance.

  • A complex nonlinear optical crystal Cadmium Mercury Thiocyanate with size 18*18*20mm3 was grown. It possesses chemical stability below 247$^{\circ}C$, no cleavage, and high mechanical strength. Blue light second harmonic of diode laser was realized.

  • The nonlinear three-wave interaction is an interesting topic having various applications in nonlinear optics, hydrodynamics, acoustic waves, and plasma physics.   • 1-D photonic band-gap structure is identified in a cholesteric liquid crystal system. The optical transmission spectrum is measured and compared with the theoretical analysis. Nonlinear transmission is measured near the band edge. Also 3-D photonic band-gap structures are fabricated from dielectric colloidal polystyrene beads through a centrifuge method. The fabricated photonic crystals exhibit opalescent colors under white light and show a clear diffraction peak dependent on the incident angle of the light beam. Also the scanning electron microscope image was taken to verify the face-centered cubic crystal structure. Bragg's law and Snell's law are employed to describe the position of angle resolved diffraction peaks. It was shown that the optically deduced effective refractive index and lattice constants were in good agreement with the crystal structure identified by scanning electron microscope.

  • We prepared nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers possessing thermal and temporal stability, which were based on the polyimides appended with NLO chromophores. NLO chromophores with a terminal hydroxyl group have been synthesized by coupling between aminobenzene or julolidine donor and phenylene bridge, and then subsequent coupling between the resulting product and tricyanofuran acceptor. The chromophores were chemically bonded to the polyimides backbone through Mitsunobu reaction. The NLO polymers showed $160-170^{\circ}C$ of Tgs and were thermally stable up to $200^{\circ}C$. We obtained optical quality films by spincoating and evaluated their electro-optical properties and temporal stability.

Bandwidth Allocation and Scheduling Algorithms for Ethernet Passive Optical Networks

  • This paper considers bandwidth allocation and scheduling problems on Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON). EPON is one of the good candidates for the optical access network. This paper formulates the bandwidth allocation problem as a nonlinear mathematical one and characterizes the optimal bandwidth allocation which maximizes weighted sum of throughput and fairness. Based upon the characterization, two heuristic algorithms are suggested with various numerical tests. The test results show that our algorithms can be used for efficient bandwidth allocation on the EPON. This paper also shows that the WSPT (Weighted Shortest Processing Time) rule is optimal for minimization the total delay time in transmitting the traffic of the given allocated bandwidth.

  • The Cellular Nonlinear Networks structure for Distance Transform (DT) and the robust optical flow detection algorithm based on the DT are proposed. The proposed algorithm is for detecting the optical flows on the trajectories only of the feature points. The translation lengths and the directions of feature movements are detected on the trajectories of feature points on which Distance Transform Field is developed. The robustness caused from the use of the Distance Transform and the easiness of hardware implementation with local analog circuits are the properties of the proposed structure, To verify the performance of the proposed structure and the algorithm, simulation has been done about zooming image.

  • A cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) system exhibits one-dimensional (1-D) Photonic bandgap (PBG) characteristics in the transmission spectrum through a selective Bragg reflection. Related to the nonlinear optical (NLO) processes in a PBG structure of CLC, the inherent periodicity has been exploited to Phase-match the fundamental and the harmonic waves through the umklapp Processes. Near bandgap edges of a CLC, harmonic generations have been shown to be enhanced significantly through the field localization. (omitted)
