  • This paper presents a comparison between two different procedures to deal with the geometric nonlinear analysis of space trusses, considering its structural stability aspects. The first nonlinear formulation, called positional, uses nodal positions rather than nodal displacements to describe the finite elements kinematics. The strains are computed directly from the proposed position concept, using a Cartesian coordinate system fixed in space. The second formulation, called corotational, is based on the explicit separation between rigid body motion and deformed motion. The numerical examples demonstrate the performances and the convergence of the responses for both analyzed formulations. Two numerical examples were compared, including a lattice beam with postcritical behavior. Despite the two completely different approaches to deal with the geometrical nonlinear problem, the results present good agreement.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear modeling method for dynamic analysis of flexible structures undergoing overall motions that employs the mode approximation method. This method, different from the naive nonlinear method that approximates only Cartesian deformation variables, approximates not only deformation variables but also strain variables. Geometric constraint relations between the strain variables and the deformation variables are introduced and incorporated into the formulation. Two numerical examples are solved and the reliability and the accuracy of the proposed formulation are examined through the numerical study.

  • A finite element analysis technology applicable to the prediction of the static nonlinear response of cable roof structure is presented. The unified kinematic description is employed to formulate the present cable element and different strain definitions such as Green-Lagrange strain, Biot strain and Hencky strain can be adopted. The Newton-Raphson method is used to trace the nonlinear load-displacement path. In the iteration process, the compressive stress of a cable element is not allowed. For the verification of the present cable element, four numerical examples are tackled. Finally, numerical results obtained by using the present cable element are provided as new benchmark test results for cable structures under static loads.

  • A new system of equations governing the nonlinear thin laminated plates with large deflections using von Karman equations is derived. The effects of transverse shear in the thin interlayer are included as part of the analysis. The finite difference method is used to perform the geometrically nonlinear behavior of the plate. The resultant equations permit the analysis of the effect of transverse shear stress deformation on the overall behavior of the interlayer using the load incremental method. For the purpose of feasibility and validity of this present method, the numerical results are compared with other available solutions for accuracy as well as efficiency. The solution techniques have been implemented and the numerical results of example problem are discussed and evaluated.

  • Cables are used in many applications such as cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges, transmission lines, telephone lines, etc. Generally, the linear relationship is inadequate to present the behavior of cable structure. In finite element analysis, cables have always been modeled as truss elements. For these types of model, the nonlinear behavior of cables has been always ignored. In order to investigate the importance of the nonlinear effect on the structural system, the effect of cable stiffness has been studied. The nonlinear behavior of cable is due to its sag. Therefore, the cable pretension provides a large portion of the inherent stiffness. Since a cable-stayed bridge has numerous degrees of freedom, analytical methods at present are not convenient to solve this type of structures but numerical methods may be feasible. It is necessary to provide a different and more representative analytical model in order to present the effect of cable stiffness on cable-stayed bridges in numerical analysis. The characteristics of cable deformation have also been well addressed. A formulation of modified modulus of elasticity has been proposed using a numerical parametric study. In order to investigate realistic bridges, a cable-stayed bridge having the geometry similar to that of Quincy Bayview Bridge is considered. The numerical results indicate that the characteristics of the cable stiffness are strongly nonlinear. It also significantly affects the structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridge systems.

  • This research article reported the nonlinear finite solutions of the nonlinear flexural strength and stress behaviour of nano sandwich graded structural shell panel under the combined thermomechanical loading. The nanotube sandwich structural model is derived mathematically using the higher-order displacement polynomial including the full geometrical nonlinear strain-displacement equations via Green-Lagrange relations. The face sheets of the sandwich panel are assumed to be carbon nanotube-reinforced polymer composite with temperature dependent material properties. Additionally, the numerical model included different types of nanotube distribution patterns for the sandwich face sheets for the sake of variable strength. The required equilibrium equation of the graded carbon nanotube sandwich structural panel is derived by minimizing the total potential energy expression. The energy expression is further solved to obtain the deflection values (linear and nonlinear) via the direct iterative method in conjunction with finite element steps. A computer code is prepared (MATLAB environment) based on the current higher-order nonlinear model for the numerical analysis purpose. The stability of the numerical solution and the validity are verified by comparing the published deflection and stress values. Finally, the nonlinear model is utilized to explore the deflection and the stresses of the nanotube-reinforced (volume fraction and distribution patterns of carbon nanotube) sandwich structure (different core to face thickness ratios) for the variable type of structural parameter (thickness ratio, aspect ratio, geometrical configurations, constraints at the edges and curvature ratio) and unlike temperature loading.

  • This paper describes a 2D nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) platform that combines heat flow analysis with realistic analysis of cracked reinforced concrete structures. The behavior models included in the structural analysis are mainly based on the Modified Compression Field Theory and the Distributed Stress Field Model. The heat flow analysis takes into account time-varying thermal loads and temperature-dependent material properties. The capability of 2D nonlinear transient thermal analysis is then implemented into a nonlinear finite element analysis program VecTor2(C) for 2D reinforced concrete membranes. Analyses of four numerical examples are performed using VecTor2, and results obtained indicate that the suggested nonlinear finite element analysis procedure is capable of modeling the complete response of a concrete structure to thermal and mechanical loads.

  • This paper deals with the nonlinear static deflections of functionally graded (FG) porous under thermal effect. Material properties vary in both position-dependent and temperature-dependent. The considered nonlinear problem is solved by using Total Lagrangian finite element method within two-dimensional (2-D) continuum model in the Newton-Raphson iteration method. In numerical examples, the effects of material distribution, porosity parameters, temperature rising on the nonlinear large deflections of FG beams are presented and discussed with porosity effects. Also, the effects of the different porosity models on the FG beams are investigated in temperature rising.

  • For a member model in nonlinear structural analysis, a lumped plastic model that idealizes its flexural bending, shear, and axial behaviors by springs with the nonlinear hysteretic model is widely adopted because of its simplicity and transparency compared to the other rigorous finite element methods. On the other hand, a challenging task in its numerical solution is to satisfy the equilibrium condition between nonlinear flexural bending and shear springs connected in series. Since the local forces between flexural and shear springs are not balanced when one or both springs experience stiffness changes (e.g., cracking, yielding, and unloading), the additional unbalanced force due to overshooting or undershooting each spring force is also generated. This paper introduces an iterative scheme for numerical solutions satisfying the equilibrium conditions between flexural bending and shear springs. The effect of equilibrium iteration on analysis results is shown by comparing the results obtained from the proposed method to those from the conventional scheme, where the equilibrium condition is not perfectly satisfied.
