  • In order to analyze the response of the offshore structure numerically, the linear potential theory is generally applied for simplicity, and only the radiation damping is considered among various damping forces. Therefore, the results of a numerical simulation can be different from the motion of the structure in a real environment. To reduce the differences between the simulation results and experimental results, the viscous damping, which affects the motion of the structure, is also taken into account. The appropriate damping model is essential for the numerical simulation in order to obtain precise responses of the offshore structure. In this study, various damping models such as linear or quadratic damping and the nonlinear drag force from numerous slender bodies were used to simulate the free decay motion of the platform, and its characteristics were confirmed. The optimized damping model was found by comparing the simulation results to the experimental results. The hydrodynamic forces and wave exciting forces of the structure were obtained using WAMIT, and the free decay test was simulated using OrcaFlex. A free decay test of the scale model was performed by KRISO.

  • Feedback flow control using an artificial neural network was numerically investigated for NACA0015 Airfoil to suppress flow separation on an airfoil. In order to achieve goal of flow control which is aimed to reduce the size of separation on the airfoil, Blowing&Suction actuator was implemented near the separation point. In the system modeling step, the proper orthogonal decomposition was applied to the pressure field. Then, some POD modes that are necessary for flow control are extracted to analyze the unsteady characteristics. NARX neural network based on decomposed modes are trained to represent the flow dynamics and finally operated in the feedback control loop. Predicted control signal was numerically applied on CFD simulation so that control effect was analyzed through comparing the characteristic of aerodynamic force and spatial modes depending on the presence of the control. The feedback control showed effectiveness in pressure drag reduction up to 29%. Numerical results confirm that the effect is due to dramatic pressure recovery around the trailing edge of the airfoil.

  • We are developing an innovative super-speed land transportation system running in a partial vacuum in tunnels with small inside diameter to reduce the aerodynamic drag forces. This paper presents the experimental results obtained on a small scale model when a super-speed train model passing through a tunnel with small inside diameter and a partial vacuum to reduce the aerodynamic drag forces. The experiments were performed on a 1/52-scale moving model rig in which a train model with a diameter of 58 mm and a length of 603 mm was accelerated in a launching tube with 12.27 m length by means of the compressed air launcher and then passed through a tunnel model with 17.149 m length. The partial vacuum was maintained in the tunnel in order to reduce the energy consumption of the propulsion system of the super-speed tube train at super-speed of 700 km/h. In this study, the blockage ratio of train to tunnel model is 0.336. Experimental results show the nonlinear effects of the vacuum on the speed-up of the train model in the tunnel model under the partial vacuum up to 0.21 atm and at the velocity up to 684 km/h. This paper is first study for experiments on the speed-up of a super-speed train model in the partial vacuum tunnels.

  • Wind tunnel tests and numerical aerodynamic analyses were conducted for an integrated catwalk structure under strong winds. From the wind tunnel tests, it is found that the aerodynamic coefficients were different from those of the typical type. The drag coefficient was larger than typical and was sensitive to number of vertical meshes installed rather than the solidity ratio. Comparing with typical catwalk, the integrated one showed larger deformation under strong wind, and the large torsional deformation are mainly caused by drag force. It did not show aerodynamic divergence even the torsional deformation reaching $20^{\circ}$. The reason could be that the stiffness is smaller and thus the catwalk is able to deform to the shape compactable with higher loading. Considering safety for construction, storm rope system is introduced to the catwalk to reduce the deformation to acceptable level.

  • This article presents a study of the largest-ever (height = 220 m) cooling tower using the large eddy simulation (LES) method. Information about fluid fields around the tower and 3D aerodynamic time history in full construction process were obtained, and the wind pressure distribution along the entire tower predicted by the developed model was compared with standard curves and measured curves to validate the effectiveness of the simulating method. Based on that, average wind pressure distribution and characteristics of fluid fields in the construction process of ultra-large cooling tower were investigated. The characteristics of fluid fields in full construction process and their working principles were investigated based on wind speeds and vorticities under different construction conditions. Then, time domain characteristics of ultra-large cooling towers in full construction process, including fluctuating wind loads, extreme wind loads, lift and drag coefficients, and relationship of measuring points, were studied and fitting formula of extreme wind load as a function of height was developed based on the nonlinear least square method. Additionally, the frequency domain characteristics of wind loads on the constructing tower, including wind pressure power spectrum at typical measuring points, lift and drag power spectrum, circumferential correlations between typical measuring points, and vertical correlations of lift coefficient and drag coefficient, were analyzed. The results revealed that the random characteristics of fluctuating wind loads, as well as corresponding extreme wind pressure and power spectra curves, varied significantly and in real time with the height of the constructing tower. This study provides references for design of wind loads during construction period of ultra-large cooling towers.

  • This study is concerned with the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of guyed towers for wave loadings. In order to analyze the nonlinear responses of guyed towers efficiently, the main tower is modeled as an equivalent stick, the guyline system is idealized as a spring with nonlinear stiffness in the horizontal direction. and the pile foundation system is represented as a linear spring in the rotational direction. The wave forces on the main tower are evaluated by using Morison's equation. In order to consider adequately the nonlinearities of the guying system and drag forces due to fluid viscosity. the analyses are performed in the time domain. The mode superposition method is adopted for solving the nonlinear equation of motion efficiently. which is based on the Newmark integration scheme. Numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the sensitivity of two major design parameters for guyed towers. i.e., the clump weight conditions and the base renditions of the tower.

  • Aircraft needs high lift-to-drag ratio and weight reduction of the structure for long endurance flight with a small power. Generally high aspect ratio wing is applied to HALE(High Altitude Long Endurance) aircraft. Also high modulus, and high strength CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) has been used in primary structures. and thin mylar(membrane material) film has been applied to skin of wing. As a result, wing is more flexible than the other structures. and the stiffness of thin mylar film has an affect on dynamic stability. In this study, the membrane characteristic of mylar film has been simulated using nonlinear gap elements. And equivalent modeling method using shell elements is presented using the nonlinear simulation result. The linear equivalent model has verified using the results of nonlinear membrane method. Proposed linear equivalent shell model has applied to mode analysis for estimate the effect of mylar mechanical properties on natural frequency.

  • A new blockage correction method has been developed for the wall interference correction of closed test-section subsonic wind tunnels based on the nonlinear relationship between separation blockage and separation drag. This method can be applied continuously from the linear lift-slope region to the highly nonlinear post-stall region by on-line processing. The present method was validated by comparing the results with a classical method based on the test results of a bluff body and a measured-boundary-condition method. It was shown that the present method is in good agreement with the measured-boundary-condition method, enabling better wall corrections than the bluff body method in both near-stall and post-stall regions.

  • This paper describes the modeling and autopilot design procedure of a Blended Wing-Body(BWB) UAV. The BWB UAV is a tailless design that integrates the wing and the fuselage. This configuration shows some aerodynamic advantages of lower wetted area to volume ratio and lower interference drag as compared to conventional type UAV. Also, BWB UAV may be increase payload capacity and flight range. However, despite of these benefits, this type of UAV presents several problems related to flying qualities, stability, and control. In this paper, the detailed modeling procedure of BWB UAV and stability analysis results using the linearized model at trim condition are represented. Finally, we designed the autopilot of BWB UAV based on a simple control allocation scheme and evaluated its performance through nonlinear simulation.

  • Longline type aquaculture facilities in the open sea are based on the cable-buoy-weight mooring system. For their optimal design it is necessary to estimate tensions along the mooring lines including the attachment points of buoys and weights. However, the dynamic analysis is very complicated due to the nonlinear behaviors of the mooring lines and the effects of wave and current. In this paper, parametric studies for various buoy-weight cases are shown. Finite difference scheme is employed in obtaining eigenfrequencies in the frequency domain. Nonlinear hydrodynamic drag forces are equivalently linearized.
