We propose and analyze a robust adaptive fuzzy controller for nonlinear systems without a priori knowledge of the sign of the input gain function. No assumptions are made about the type of nonlinearities of the system, except that such nonlinearities are smooth. The uncertain nonlinearities are captured by the fuzzy systems that have been proven to be universal approximators. The proposed control scheme completely overcomes the singularity problem that occurs in the indirect adaptive feedback linearizing control. Projection in the estimated parameters and switching in the control input are both not required. The stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in the Lyapunov viewpoint.

In this paper, a direct adaptive control, based on Lyapunov Function Candidate, is applied to a nonlinear Gunner's Primary Stabilized Head Mirror system to derive a parameter adaptation scheme; furthemore, a nonlinear sliding mode control, but also compensating the error in identification of the parameters which are even varying of have uncertain values. The performance of the adaptive controller is determined by the tracking ability to a desired model under some disturbances and the slowly varying parameters of the system. Both adaptive scheme and sliding mode play an important fole in the improvement of the nonlinear system control.

An adaptive neural controller for perturbed strict-feedback nonlinear system is proposed. All the previous adaptive neural (or fuzzy) controllers are based on the backstepping scheme where the universal approximators are employed in every design steps. These schemes involve virtual controls and their time derivatives that make the stability analysis and implementation of the controller very complex. This fact is called 'explosion of complexty ' since the complexity grows exponentially as the system dynamic order increases. The proposed adaptive neural control scheme adopt the backstepping design procedure only for determining ideal control law and employ only one neural network to approximate the finally selected ideal controller, which makes the controller design procedure and stability analysis considerably simple compared to the previously proposed controllers. It is shown that all the time-varing signals containing tracking error are stable in the Lyapunov viewpoint.
The synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) servo-drive system has highly nonlinear uncertainties owing to a convex construction effect. It is difficult for the linear control method to achieve good performance for the SynRM drive system. The nonlinear backstepping control system using upper bound with switching function is proposed to inhibit uncertainty action for controlling the SynRM drive system. However, this method uses a large upper bound with a switching function, which results in a large chattering. In order to reduce this chattering, a nonlinear backstepping control system using an adaptive law is proposed to estimate the lumped uncertainty. Since this method uses an adaptive law, it cannot achiever satisfactory performance. Therefore, a nonlinear backstepping control system using a reformed recurrent Hermite polynomial neural network with an adaptive law and an error estimated law is proposed to estimate the lumped uncertainty and to compensate the estimated error in order to enhance the robustness of the SynRM drive system. Further, the reformed recurrent Hermite polynomial neural network with two learning rates is derived according to an increment type Lyapunov function to speed-up the parameter convergence. Finally, some experimental results and a comparative analysis are presented to verify that the proposed control system has better control performance for controlling SynRM drive systems.
The payload variation and modeling error can lye parameterized in such a way that known nonlinear functions are multiplied linearly by parameter errors. An adaptive control algorithm is derived for a perturbed linear system with such parameterization. Hence, in this approach no linear approximation of robot system is needed for the application of an adaptive law. The stability of the adaptive control algorithm is established and also supported by a computer simulation result.
To achieve high performance speed regulation, a robust adaptive speed controller is proposed for the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) subject to parameter uncertainties and input saturations in this paper. A nonlinear adaptive control is introduced to compensate the PMSM speed tracking errors due to uncertainties, disturbances and control input saturation constraints. By combining the adaptive control and the nonlinear robust control based on the interconnection and damping assignment (IDA) strategy, a new robust adaptive control is designed for speed regulation of PMSM. Stability and robustness of the closed-loop control system involved with the constrained control inputs rather than unconstrained control inputs are validated. Simulations for PMSM control in the presence of uncertainties and saturations nonlinearities show that the proposed approach is effective to regulate speed, and the average tracking error using the proposed approach is at least 32% smaller than the compared methods.

In this paper, a novel estimation technique for a robust adaptive control scheme is presented for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with a general set of uncertainty. For a class of introduced more extended semi-strict feedback forms which generalize the systems studied in recent years, a novel estimation technique is proposed to estimate the states of the fully nonlinear unmodeled dynamics without stringent conditions. With the introduction of powerful functions, the estimation error can be tuned to a desired small region around the origin via the estimator parameters. In addition, with some effective functions, a modified adaptive backstepping for dynamic uncertainties is presented to drive the output to an arbitrarily small region around the origin by an appropriate choice of the design parameters. With our proposed schemes, we can remove or relax the assumptions of the existing results.

In this paper, we introduce an adaptive control method to improve the position accuracy and reduce nonlinear friction effects for the linear motion servo system with the nonlinear friction. The considered system plant included not only the variation of the mass of mover but also the friction change by the normal force. We also designed an adaptive controller with the mass estimator and the compensator by observing the variation of normal force. The effectiveness and system performances for the proposed control method in this paper show to improve than other control methods through numerical simulations.
In this paper we present a scheme of adaptive backstepping controller for nonlinear system. Backstepping approach has recently been adopted as a design tool for nonlinear control and especially backstepping with modular design used to seperately design controller and identifier. In the modular design the nonlinear damping term is contained in controller for input-to-state stability (ISS). We compare the ISS controller, which used in general case, with the weak-ISS controller that attenuates the effect of nonlinear damping term and prove their advantages and disadvantages by simulation.
Nonlinear adaptive control for the laboratory pressure-flow model. Control valves are installed on both sides. The pressure and the outlet flow rate are measured. The pressure and outlet flow rate are controlled variables and the control valve stem positions on both sides are the manipulated variables. The variation in both inputs will influence both controlled variables. The control performance is good, in spite of varying valve coefficients of inlet and outlet.
