Third harmonic generation microscopy is described in the frame work of the theory of harmonic generation with Gaussian focused beams inside a bulk material as well as at the vicinity of an interface. This model is then applied to characterize different types of materials in terms of electronic third-order susceptibility. Examples of bulk glasses, poled glasses, laser-induced modifications in glasses and nanoparticles in solution are given in order to give a survey of the broad application field of THG microscopy in material characterization.

This paper presents a nonlinear analysis technique with slip, the effects of slip modulus and composite action by shear connector on behavior and capacity in composite structure of sandwich system. As a results of this study, it proved that the slip modulus, in case of shear behavior, seldom influence load-resistance capacity such as yield and ultimate load, but in case of flexural behavior, it appropriately influence load-resistance capacity because of stress redistribution by slip. In case of flexural behavior, analysis result for perfect-composite results in over-estimation and perfect-slip results in under-estimation on behavior and capacity. Therefore, it is desirable to model steel-concrete interface with partial-composite. The effects of slip on behavior and capacity are less in case of positive composite than loosely composite, and it proved that composite action by shear connector improve the load-resistance capacity of this system.

Considering fluid-structure-soil interactions, a finite-element model for a liquid-storage tank is presented and the nonlinear earthquake response analysis is formulated. The tank structure is modeled considering shell elements with geometric and material nonlinearities. The fluid is represented by acoustic elements and combined with the structure using interface elements. To consider the soil-structure interactions, the near- and far-field regions of soil are modeled with solid elements and perfectly matched discrete layers, respectively. This approach is applied to the seismic fragility analysis of a 200,000 kL liquid-storage tank. The fragility curve is observed to be influenced by the amplification and filtering of rock outcrop motions at the site when the soil-structure interactions are considered.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior and the strength of SRG (Steel Reinforced Grout) externally strengthened Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams by using a nonlinear numerical analysis. The numerical simulation was carried out by using a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model. An interface element with a suitable damage model was used to model the connection between concrete surface and SRG reinforcing layer. The reliability of the finite element 3D-model was checked using experimental data obtained on a set of three RC beams. The parameters taken into consideration were the external configuration, with or without U-end anchorages, the concrete strength, the amount of internal tensile steel reinforcement. Conclusions were made concerning the strength and the ductility of the strengthened beams by varying the parameters and on the effectiveness of the SRG reinforcing system applied with two types of external strengthening configuration.

An extension of the density-gradient model to include the non-local transport effect is presented. The governing equations can be derived from the first three moments of the Wigner distribution function with some approximations. A new nonlinear discretization scheme is applied to the model to reduce the discretization error. We also developed a new boundary condition for the $Si/SiO_2$ interface that includes the electron wavefunction penetration into the oxide to obtain more accurate C-V characteristics. We report the simulation results of a 25-nm metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) device.
Recently, the external bonding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets has come to be regarded as a very effective method for strengthening of reinforced concrete structures. The behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC structure is mainly governed by the interfacial behavior, which represents the stress transfer and relative slip between concrete and the CFRP sheet. In this study, the effects of bonded length, width and concrete strength on the interfacial behavior are verified and a bond-slip model is proposed. The proposed bond-slip model has nonlinear ascending regions and exponential descending regions, facilitated by modifying the conventional bilinear bond-slip model. Finite element analysis results of interface element implemented with bond-slip model have shown good agreement with the experimental results performed in this study. It is found that the failure load and strain distribution predicted by finite element analysis with the proposed bond-slip are in good agreement with results of experiments.

The current study compares the effect of structure-soil-structure interaction (SSSI) on the dynamic responses of adjacent buildings and isolated structures including soil-structure interaction (SSI) with the responses of fixed-base structures. Structural responses such as the relative acceleration, displacement, drift and shear force were considered under earthquake ground motion excitation. For this purpose, 5-, 10- and 15-story structures with 2-bay moment resisting frames resting on shallow foundations were modeled as a group of buildings in soft soil media. Viscous lateral boundaries and interface elements were applied to the soil model to simulate semi-infinite soil media, frictional contact and probable slip under seismic excitation. The direct method was employed for fully nonlinear time-history dynamic analysis in OpenSees using 3D finite element soil-structure models with different building positions. The results showed that the responses of the grouped structures were strongly influenced by the adjacent structures. The responses were as much as 4 times greater for drift and 2.3 times greater for shear force than the responses of fixed-base models.
Structural design of the vertical displacements and shear strains in the earth fill (EF) dams has great importance in the structural engineering problems. Moreover, far fault earthquakes have significant seismic effects on seismic damage performance of EF dams like the near fault earthquakes. For this reason, three dimensional (3D) earthquake damage performance of Oroville dam is assessed considering different far-fault ground motions in this study. Oroville Dam was built in United States of America-California and its height is 234.7 m (770 ft.). 3D model of Oroville dam is modelled using FLAC3D software based on finite difference approach. In order to represent interaction condition between discrete surfaces, special interface elements are used between dam body and foundation. Non-reflecting seismic boundary conditions (free field and quiet) are defined to the main surfaces of the dam for the nonlinear seismic analyses. 6 different far-fault ground motions are taken into account for the full reservoir condition of Oroville dam. According to nonlinear seismic analysis results, the effects of far-fault ground motions on the nonlinear seismic settlement and shear strain behaviour of Oroville EF dam are determined and evaluated in detail. It is clearly seen that far-fault earthquakes have very significant seismic effects on the settlement-shear strain behaviour of EF dams and these earthquakes create vital important seismic damages on the swelling behaviour of dam body surface. Moreover, it is proposed that far-fault ground motions should not be ignored while modelling EF dams.
The Disturbed State Concept (DSC) model, with simplified unloading/reloading formulation, is implemented in a nonlinear dynamic finite element program fur porous media named DSC_DYN2D. In this research, the DSC constitutive model is utilized using the HiSS model for relative intact (RI) part and the critical state model for the fully adjusted (FA) part in the material. The general formulation for implementation is developed. The cyclic loading tests from the field load test data on a pile segment were numerically simulated using the finite element program DSC_DYN2D and compared with field measurements and those from the previous analysis with the HiSS model. The DSC predictions show improved agreement with the field behavior of the pile compared to those from the HiSS model. Overall, the computer procedure with the DSC model allows improved and realistic simulation of the complex dynamic soil-structure interaction problems.
Accurate modeling of contact interface in bolted joints is crucial in predicting the dynamic behavior for bolted assemblies under external load. This paper presents a contact pressure distribution based non-uniform virtual material method to describe the joint interface of assembly structure, which is connected by sparsely distributed multi-bolts. Firstly, the contact pressure distribution of bolted joints is obtained by the nonlinear static analysis in the finite element software ANSYS. The contact surface around bolt hole is divided into several sub-layers, and contact pressure in each sub-layer is thought to be evenly. Then, considering multi-asperity contact at the micro perspective, the relationship between contact pressure and interfacial virtual material parameters for each sub-layer is established by using the fractal contact theory. Finally, an experimental platform for the dynamic characteristics testing of a beam lap structure with double-bolted joint is constructed to validate the efficiency of proposed method. It is found that the theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental results by impact response in both time- and frequency-domain, and the relative errors of the first four natural frequencies are less than 1%. Furthermore, the presented model is used to examine the effect of rough contact surface on dynamic characteristics of bolted joint.
