Automotive industries are interested in material development with low weight and recycling. Grommet is made from EPDM at rubber and used as an automotive component. The nonlinear material properties of rubber are important to predict the behaviors of rubber product. This study concerns material property test to achieve stress-strain curve. Curve fitting is carried out to obtain the nonlinear material constant. The nonlinear material constants of rubber are used for the nonlinear finite element analysis. The results of finite element analysis is executed to predict the behavior property of grommet.
A novel higher order shear-deformable beam model, which provides linear variation of transversal normal strain and quadratic variation of shearing strain, is proposed to describe the beam resting on foundation. Then, the traditional two-parameter Pasternak foundation model is modified to capture the effects of the axial deformation of beam. The Masing's friction law is incorporated to deal with nonlinear interaction between the foundation and the beam bottom, and the nonlinear properties of the beam material are also considered. To solve the mathematical problem, a displacement-based finite element is formulated, and the reliability of the proposed model is verified. Finally, numerical examples are presented to study the effects of the interfacial friction between the beam and foundation, and the mechanical behavior due to the tensionless characteristics of the foundation is also examined. Numerical results indicate that the effects of tensionless characteristics of foundation and the interfacial friction have significant influences on the mechanical behavior of the beam-foundation system.
In the field of welding the mechanical behavior of a welded structure under consideration may be predicted via heat transfer and welding residual stress analysis. Usually such numerical analyses are limited to small regular mesh models or test specimens. Nevertheless, there is very few strength assessment of the whole structure that includes the effect of welded residual stress. The present work is based on the specialized finite element codes for the calculation of nonlinear heat transfer details and residual stress including the external load on the welded RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section) T-joint connections of the whole structure. First the thermal history of the combined fillet and butt-welded T-joint equal width cold-formed RHS are calculated using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) considering the quarter model of the joint. Then using this thermal history the residual stress around the joints has been evaluated. To validity the FEA result, the calculated residual stresses were compared with the available experimental results. The residual stress obtained from the quarter model is mapped to the full model and then to the whole structure model using FEM codes. The results from the FEM codes were exported to the commercial package for visualization and further analysis applying loads and boundary conditions on the whole structure. The residual stress redistribution along with the external applied load is examined computationally.
This paper presents a new approach regarding thermal characteristics associated with a design of the high efficiency motor. Electrical conduction materials, such as coil and aluminum embedded in the core generate high heat exerting negative influence on both lifetime and performance of machine. Thus, it is necessary to design high efficiency motor considering heat transfer in order to improve motor performance and to be protected against overheating. In this paper, firstly, numerical analysis of electromagnetic field is carried out by the nonlinear transient finite element method (FEM). Secondly, the linear static FEA of magneto-thermal field is implemented by applying source current computed by the nonlinear transient analysis. FE results are validated in terms of electromagnetics and heat transfer by experiments. And then, the pseudo-transient topology optimization using a multi-objective function is performed. The proposed method is applied to a squirrel cage single-phase induction motor of the scroll compressor.
It was clear from the former researches on reinforced concrete filled tubular steel (RCFT) structures that RCFT structures have different performance than concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) structures. However, despite of that, load-sharing ratio of RCFT is evaluating by the formula and range of CFT given by JSCE. Therefore, the aim of this investigation is to study the load-sharing ratio of RCFT columns subjected to axial compressive load by performing numerical simulations of RCFT columns with the nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) program - ADINA. To achieve this goal, firstly proper material constitutive models for concrete, steel tube and reinforcement are proposed. Then axial compression tests of concrete, RC, CFT, and RCFT columns are carried out to verify proposed material constitutive models. Finally, by the plenty of numerical analysis with small-sized and big-sized columns, load-sharing ratio of RCFT columns was studied, the evaluation formulas and range were proposed, application of the formula was demonstrated, and following conclusions were drawn: The FEA model introduced in this paper can be applied to nonlinear analysis of RCFT columns with reliable results; the load-sharing ratio evaluation formula and range of CFT should not be applied to RCFT; The lower limit for the range of load-sharing ratio of RCFT can be smaller than that of CFT; the proposed formulas for load-sharing ratio of RCFT have practical mean in design of RCFT columns.
According to SOLAS Regulation XII/6.5.3 and IMO GBS functional requirement(IMO, 2010), the structural redundancy of multi-bay stiffened panel in cargo area of bulk carrier should be provided enough in order to endure the initial design load though one bay of the stiffened panel is damaged due to plastic deformation or fatigue crack. To satisfy structural redundancy, Harmonized Common Structural Rules (hereinafter CSR-H, IACS, 2014) proposed to use 1.15 instead of 1.0 for buckling usage factor of stiffened panel in cargo area. This paper shows that buckling usage factor in CSR-H for structural redundancy is somewhat conservative considering the ultimate strength calculated by using nonlinear FEA for the damaged condition which is only one bay's plastic deformation due to colliding by weigh object like a bucket. Also, this paper presents that increasing of plate thickness only is more effective to get enough structural redundancy.
The use of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls (SW) as an efficient lateral load-carrying system has gained recent attention. However, creating openings in RC shear walls is unavoidable due to architectural requirements. This reduces the walls' strength and stiffness, resulting in the development of wall piers. In this study, the cyclic behavior of RC shear walls with openings, reinforced with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets in various patterns, was numerically investigated. Finite element analysis (FEA) using ABAQUS software was employed. Additionally, the retrofitting of sub-standard buildings (5, 10, and 15-story structures) designed based on the old and new versions of the Iranian Code of Practice for Seismic-Resistant Structures was evaluated. Nonlinear static analyses, specifically pushover analyses, were conducted on the structures. The best pattern of CFRP wrapping was determined and utilized for retrofitting the sub-standard structures. Various structural parameters, such as load-carrying capacity, ductility, stress contours, and tension damage contours, were compared to assess the efficiency of the retrofit solution. The results indicated that the load-carrying capacity of the sub-standard structures was lower than that of standard ones by 57%, 69%, and 67% for 5, 10, and 15-story buildings, respectively. However, the retrofit solution utilizing CFRP showed promising results, enhancing the capacity by 10-25%. The retrofitted structures demonstrated increased yield strength, ultimate strength, and ductility through CFRP wrapping and effectively prevented wall slipping.
This paper presents estimation of deterministic damage extents and locations due to collision and grounding which are defined by ABS guideline and DNV ship rules. It is noted that the overall extents of damages from DNV are larger than those from ABS. Nonlinear FEAs are carried out to predict residual longitudinal strength of hull girder with asymmetric severe damages. The accuracy of the applied FEA procedure is proved by comparing FEA result with test result of a 1/3-scaled frigate. The investigated vessels are a VLCC and a large-sized bulker for which evenly distributed heeling angles from $0^{\circ}$(sagging) to $180^{\circ}$(hogging) by $30^{\circ}$ due to damage-induced flooding are taken into account. The reduction ratios of the ultimate residual strength for the damaged cases to those for the intact sagging case are shown. It is proved that the grounding damage case under DNV assumption reveals most critical the residual strength. The design formulas are presented to assure minimum residual ultimate moment after damage.
In this study, we developed the gear type vane damper replacing the link type through gear design using Finite Element Analysis(FEA). FEA about the pinion and the vane shaft in the boss of gear type damper for quality improvement was accomplished. We analyzed fluid flow according to angular displacement. Catched the problem of the torque and backlash bring to the pinion as structure improvement of the forced draft fan(FD FAN). Finally, we compared the gear driving result with simulation. It is the objective of the present study to identify a nonlinear flow rate control of gear type vane damper and to suggest a damper shape with a linear flow rate control. This study is related to the development of gear type vane damper change link type in forced draft fan.
Many have been performed to decrease the thickness of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles to reduce the manufacturing cost. However, it is difficult to guarantee the mechanical strength under top-loading after decreasing the thickness. This paper investigates the large deformation characteristics of a PET bottle under a compressive load using experimental and finite element analysis (FEA) data. A round 1.65-L bottle is analyzed under a compressive velocity of 5 mm/min with a maximum load of 9,800 N in experiments. The arc length method is used in a nonlinear FEA to understand the buckling phenomenon of the PET bottle. From the analyzed results, a recommendation is made to restrict the top loading to less than 1,208 N, because the first buckling phenomenon occurred at a load of 1,208 N.
