The aim of this research is to model the behaviour of recently developed high force to volume (HF2V) passive energy dissipation devices using a simple finite element (FE) model. Thus, the end result will be suitable for use in a standard FE code to enable computationally fast and efficient analysis and design. Two models are developed. First, a detailed axial model that models an experimental setup is created to validate the approach versus experimental results. Second, a computationally and geometrically simpler equivalent rotational hinge element model is presented. Both models are created in ABAQUS, a standard nonlinear FE code. The elastic, plastic and damping properties of the elements used to model the HF2V devices are based on results from a series of quasi-static force-displacement loops and velocity based tests of these HF2V devices. Comparison of the FE model results with the experimental results from a half scale steel beam-column sub-assembly are within 10% error. The rotational model matches the output of the more complex and computationally expensive axial element model. The simpler model will allow computationally efficient non-linear analysis of large structures with many degrees of freedom, while the more complex and physically accurate axial model will allow detailed analysis of joint connection architecture. Their high correlation to experimental results helps better guarantee the fidelity of the results of such investigations.

A column resisting axial load and seismic load is one of the main members in a structural system. The heated column by event of a fire can lose its strength and it may damage its structural system or cause the collapse of the entire structural system. In this study, the fire resistance capacity of internally confined hollow concrete filled tube (ICH CFT) column was investigated. In an ICH CFT column, the yield strength of the external tube is important as a concrete filled tube (CFT) column because the external tube confines the filled concrete and the strength of the column depends on the confined effect. A study was performed by finite element analyses considering the confined effect and material nonlinearity as the temperature changes by the fire. The hollow ratio, the thickness of the external tube, and the strength of concrete were selected as the parameters for the analyses. The analyses were performed by using a commercial FEA program (ABAQUS) and nonlinear concrete model program. The analysis results showed that the hollow ratio and the strength of concrete mainly affect the fire resisting capacity of an ICH CFT column.

In this research, design optimization of an aircraft wing has been performed using the fully automated Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) framework, which integrates aerodynamic and structural analysis considering nonlinear structural behavior. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mesh is generated automatically from parametric modeling using CATIA and Gambit, followed by an automatic flow analysis using FLUENT. A computational structure mechanics (CSM) mesh is generated automatically by the parametric method of the CATIA and visual basic script of NASTRAN-FX. The structure is analyzed by ABAQUS. Interaction between CFD and CSM is performed by a fully automated system. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is applied for optimization, helping to achieve the global optimum. The optimization design result demonstrates successful application of the fully automated MDO framework.
In this study, the stub columns of built-up H-section and square hollow section subjected to eccentrical loads are tested to evaluate the applicability of the structural members with 800MPa high-strength steel (HSA800) on current design specification. Analytical studies of FE model are conducted to validate the test results and then the verified FE models are used for extensive parametric studies for checking up the applicability of current design code. The parameters are width-to-thickness ratios and axial load ratios. From P-M correlations on parameter models, all stub columns with non-compact sections exceed the current design requirements about axial force and flexural strength ratios are sufficiently secured as the axial load ratios are decreased. The built-up hollow sections with slender section model do not satisfy the current design specification about axial force.
Due to higher stiffness to weight, higher corrosion resistance, higher strength to weight ratios and good durability, concrete composite structures provide many advantages as compared with conventional materials. Thus, they have wide applications in the field of concrete construction. This research focuses on the structural behavior of steel-tube CFRP confined concrete (STCCC) columns under axial concentric loading. A nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) model of STCCC columns was simulated using ABAQUS which was then, calibrated for different material and geometric models of concrete, steel tube and CFRP material using the experimental results from the literature. The comparative study of the NLFEA predictions and the experimental results indicated that the proposed constitutive NLFEA model can accurately predict the structural performance of STCCC columns. After the calibration of NLFEA model, an extensive parametric study was performed to examine the effects of different critical parameters of composite columns such as; (i) unconfined concrete strength, (ii) number of CFRP layers, (iii) thickness of steel tube and (iv) concrete core diameter, on the axial load capacity. Furthermore, a large database of axial strength of 700 confined concrete compression members was developed from the previous researches to give an analytical model that predicts the ultimate axial strength of composite columns accurately. The comparison of the predictions of the proposed analytical model was done with the predictions of 216 NLFEA models from the parametric study. A close agreement was represented by the predictions of the proposed constitutive NLFEA model and the analytical model.

Recently, finite element analysis technique has been widely used for structural and mechanical understandings of human body in the dentistry field. This research proposed an effective finite element modeling method based on CT images, and parametric studies were performed for the occlusal simulation. The analyses were performed considering linear material behaviors and nonlinear geometrical effect, and validated with the experimental results. In addition, the skull models with two different molar relations such as Class I and full-CUSP Class II were generated and the analyses were performed using the proposed analytical method. As results, the relationships between the mandibular movement and occlusal force of both two models showed similar tendency in human occlusal force. However, stress was evenly distributed from teeth to facial bone in the skull model with Class I, while stress concentration was appeared in the model with full-CUSP Class II due to the changes of occlusal surfaces of the model.

The information about the deformations of high-aspect-ratio wings is needed for the real-time monitoring of structural responses. Wing deformation in flight can be predicted by using relationship between the curvatures and the strains on the wing skin. It is also necessary to consider geometric nonlinearity when the large deformation of wing is occurred. The strain distribution on fixed-end is complex in the chordwise direction because of the geometric shape of fixed-wings on fuselages. Hence, the wing displacement can be diversely predicted by the location of the strain sensing lines in the chordwise direction. We conducted a study about prediction method of displacements regardless of the chordwise strain sensing locations. To correct spanwise strains, the ratio of spanwise strain to chordwise strain, Poisson's ratio, and the ratio of the plate strain to the beam strain were used. The predicted displacements using the strain correction were consistent with those calculated by the FEA and verified through the bending testing.

Progressive collapse is a chain reaction of failures propagating throughout a portion of a structure that is disproportionate to the original local failure. When column members are subjected to unexpected load (compression load), they will buckle if the applied load is greater than the critical load that induces buckling. The post-buckling strength of the columns will decrease rapidly, but if there is enough residual strength, the members will absorb the potential energy generated by the impact load to prevent progressive collapse. Thus, it is necessary to identify the relationship of the load-deformation of a column member in the progressive collapse of a structure up to final collapse. In this study, we carried out nonlinear FEM analysis and based on deflection theory, we investigated the load-deformation relationship of H-section steel columns when both ends were fixed.
This paper presents an analytic method and a design technique for golf shoes with air-cycled pump in the midsole. The golf shoes are modeled using the finite element method for better design by considering the configuration of the midsole and the outsole, which compose the golf shoes. Also the optimum size and shape of air-cycled pump in the midsole is examined. The values or standard human pressure for boundary conditions are adopted for the FEA(Finite Element Analysis). The unknown constants of the strain energy function of Ogden type are observed in accordance with the axial tension test. By the commercial FEM software for nonlinear analysis, MARC V7.3, the strains and the values of volume change for the midsole and the outsole are obtained, respectively. It can be concluded that results obtained by FEM in the midsole and the outsole are different depending on the characteristic of elastomer The results reported herein provide better understanding of analyzing the golf shoes. Moreover, it is believed that those properties of the results can be utilized in the shoes industry to develop the effective design method.

The tubes which are applied in jacket platforms as the supporting structure might be collided by supply vessels. Such kind of impact will lead to plastic deformation on tube members. As a result, the ultimate strength of tubes will decrease compared to that of intact ones. In order to make a decision on whether to repair or replace the members, it is crucial to know the residual strength of the tubes. After being damaged by lateral impact, the simply supported tubes will definitely loss a certain extent of load carrying capacity under uniform axial compression. Therefore, in this paper, the relationship between the residual ultimate strength of the damaged circular tube by collision and the energy dissipation due to lateral impact is investigated. The influences of several parameters, such as the length, diameter and thickness of the tube and the impact energy, on the reduction of ultimate strength are investigated. A series of numerical simulations are performed using nonlinear FEA software LS-DYNA. Based on simulation results, a non-dimensional parameter is introduced to represent the degree of damage of various size of tubes after collision impact. By applying this non-dimensional parameter, a simplified formula has been derived to describe the relationship between axial compressive residual ultimate and lateral impact energy and tube parameters. Finally, by comparing with the allowable compressive stress proposed in API rules (RP2A-WSD A P I, 2000), the critical damage of tube due to collision impact to be repaired is proposed.
