Ultrasonic technique which is one of the most common and reliable nondestructive evaluation techniques has been applied to evaluate the integrity of structures by analyzing the characteristics of signal scattered from internal defects. Therefore, the numerical analysis of the ultrasonic scattered field is absolutely necessary for the accurate and quantitative estimation of internal defects. Various modeling techniques now play an important role in nondestructive evaluation and have been employed to solve elastic wave scattering problems. Because the elastodynamic boundary element method is useful to analyze the scattered field in infinite media. it has been used to calculate the ultrasonic wavefields scattered from internal defects. In this study, a review of the boundary element method used for elastic wave scattering problems is presented and, as examples of the boundary element method, the scattered fields due to a circular cavity subjected to incident SH-wave and due to a surface-breaking crack subjected to incident Rayleigh wave are illustrated.

Nondestructive strength Equations are commonly used to determine the strength of concrete. However, the application of the existing equations may include many errors because this method is proposed on the basis of limited experimental parameters while actual bridges have various parameters such as conditions of concrete mixtures, properties of concrete strength, etc. Also, the error among the existing equations causes the confusion when engineers select the proper estimation equation for the concerned bridge. In this study, a series of the field inspection and the test have been performed on 297 existing bridges, in order to evaluate the bridges, based on the test results of the in-depth inspection, and the estimated strengths by means of the nondestructive strength equations are analyzed and compared with results of the core specimen strengths. According to results of analyses, the nondestructive strength equation proposed by CNDT Committee of Architectural Institute of Japan had high relationship with core strength. However, the strengths predicted by this equation, are underestimated when concrete's strengths are over 30 MPa, otherwise, they are overestimated. Also in this paper, based on the relationship between the estimated nondestructive concrete strengths and the core specimen strengths the modified strength equation through simple correlation analysis is proposed.

In the present paper, the nondestructive test method was suggest to establish the bonding status of a motor case assembly composed of a steel motor case, adiabatic rubber layer and an ablative composite tube with strain data, AE(acoustic emission) signals and UT(ultrasonic test) data. And, finite element analysis was conducted to verify quantitatively the bonding status of motor case assembly under inner pressure loading. The bonding status could be judged whether the bonding status is perfect or contact condition by the data correlation study with AE signals and strain data measured from air pressure test. And, to classify the bonding status of motor case and rubber layer among bonding layers, UT method was also applied. From this study, the bonding status could be classified and detected into fourth types for all bonding layers as follows: (1) initial un-bonding, (2) perfect do-bonding during an air pressure test, (3) partially de-bonding during an air pressure test, and (4) perfect bonding.

Egg quality indices are related with freshness, size of air chamber, loss of weight, and viscosity of the yolk and the protein. However, since the described quality parameters require measured in a destructive way, it is not suitable to inspect the egg quality with complete enumeration. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the potential of image analysis method for evaluation of internal egg quality. Samples of 90 fresh eggs were collected immediately after laying and stored up to 24 days. Five eggs were randomly drawn from each storage condition (packing vs unpacking) at a regular interval and loss of weight, specific gravity and size of air chamber were measured. The image analysis for nondestructive measurement of size of air chamber was also studied. Results showed that the egg weight and gravity gradually decreased with increasing of storage days, while the size of air chamber linear increased caused by evaporation of water through the shell. A relationship a between conventional method and the image analysis method for measuring the size of air chamber was developed with the correlation coefficient of 0.928. The new finding implied that image analysis might provide a useful nondestructive tool to assess internal egg quality.
This work aims to clarify the character and selection of repair papers, based on fibre orientation information of paper cultural properties under restoration; using nondestructive image analysis applied to micrographs of paper surfaces. Image analysis using fast Fourier transform with suitable modifications was demonstrated to be an effective means to determine angle and intensity of fiber orientation as a nondestructive method. In the case of contemporary repair papers, the Japanese handmade paper exhibited a high anisotropy value, while the Korean handmade papers exhibited low anisotropy values. Korea and Japanese traditional hand making papers were well distinguished. Korea and Japanese papers made in the traditional ways showed its own characteristic orientation behavior in accordance with the motion of a bamboo wire.

In this study, a finite element(FE) analysis on electro-mechanical impedance response of cable-anchor connection interface under various anchor force is presented. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, an interface washer coupled with piezoelectric(PZT) material is designed for monitoring cable-force loss. The interface washer is a small aluminum plate on which a PZT patch is surface-bonded. Cable-force loss could be monitored by installing the interface washer between the anchor plate and the anchorage of cable-anchor connection and examining the changes of impedance of the interface washer. Secondly, a FE model for cable-anchor connection is established to examine the effect of cable-force on impedance response of interface washer. Also, the effects of geometrical and material properties of the interface washer on impedance responses under various cable-forces are investigated. Finally, validation of the FE analysis is experimentally evaluated by a lab-scale cable-anchor connection.
Demand for now nondestructive evaluation are growing to detect fatigue crack growth behavior to predict long term performance of materials and structure in aggressive environments especially when they are In non-visible area. Acoustic emission technique is well suited to these problems and has drawn a keen interests because of its dynamic detection ability, extreme sensitivity and location of growing defects. In this study, we analysed acoustic emission signals obtained in fatigue and tensile test of high strength fire resistance steel for frame structure with time-frequency analysis methods. The main frequency range is different in the noise and the fatigue crack propagation. It could be classified that it were also generated by composite fracture mechanics of cleavage, dimple, inclusion separation etc.

This study performs to investigate deformation of wall thinning pipe and to find out the position of the internal thinning defect by shearography. Shearography is one of optical methods those have applied to nondestructive testing (NDT) and the strain/stress analysis. This technique has the merit of the directly measuring the first derivative of displacement, sensitivity of which can be adjusted by the handling of optical component in interferometer. In this paper, we tested carbon steel pipe locally wall thinned and loaded internal pressure and developed the nondestructive out-of-plane deformation analysis technique fur internal thinning defect of elbow by shearography. From the results, it was confirmed that this technique is proper to the practical application on the pipe line system with internal defect.

Stress analysis has been performed using computer program ANSYS in the pressurizer surge line in accordance with ASME Sec. III in order to predict possibility of fatigue failure due to thermal stratification phenomena in pipes connected to reactor coolant system of nuclear power plants. Highly vulnerable area to crack generation has been chosen by the analysis of fatigue due to thermal stress in pressurizer surge line. This kind of result can be helpful to choose the location requiring intensive care during inservice inspection of nuclear power plants.

Nondestructive nanostructural analysis is indispensable in the development of nano-materials and nano-fabrication processes for use in nanotechnology applications. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time a quantitative, nondestructive analysis of nanostructured thin films supported on substrates and their templated nanopores by using grazing incidence X-ray scattering and data analysis with a derived scattering theory. Our analysis disclosed that vertically oriented nanodomain cylinders had formed in 20-100 nm thick films supported on substrates consisting of a mixture of poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) and PMMA homopolymer, and that the PMMA nanodomains were selectively etched out by ultraviolet light exposure and a subsequent rinse with acetic acid, resulting in a structure consisting of hexagonally packed cylindrical nanopores.
