  • The comparison and analysis of flaw detectability, flaw sizing methods and allowable criteria in accordance with the applicable codes, ASME and RCC-M Code, in ultrasonic examination of pressure vessel in nuclear power plants were studied. Accordding to the codes, calibration blocks were made. The artificial flaws such as disc and band types in test specimens were machined. They were detected and evaluated with etch code requirements and measured values were compared with the actual flaws.

  • The optical method of reflected and transmitted caustics has been utilized in mechanics investigations. This relatively new experimental technique has been successfully applied on various fracture analysis such as static and dynamic c rack propagation studies, some elasticity problems and contact stress, etc, In this study, the stress intensity factors in thin polycarbonate specimens, a kind of optically anisotropic material, under Mode I loading condition are estimated by the method of caustics. The values of stress intensity factors obtained from theoretical caustics shape are compared by the experiment. It is confirmed that the two stress intensity factors agree well with Srawley's solution.

  • This paper is to analyze the surface roughness in wet and dry surface grinding in which working conditions are table feed, cross feed and down feed. FFT analyzer is used to identify the surface roughness and the data of surface roughness are stored and displayed using an interfaced computer. In results, components affecting surface roughness exist within 200Hz with respect the conditions and methods of grinding operation. Also, with increase of table feed, cross feed and down feed, the value of surface roughness increases. Of them, cross feed has first influence on surface roughness. In dry, preciser surface can be obtained than one in wet.

  • The enamel, the upper layer of a tooth has remarkable capability of bearing severe loading on the tooth. The fracture behavior is important to understand the mechanism of load bearing and it could be very useful for developing new materials. Non-destructive evaluation of such materials will also benefit from this knowledge. The graded microstructures of enamel were modeled by finite element analysis software and the J-integrals and the stress intensity factors were evaluated as the fracture parameters. The results show that these parameters are location dependent. Those values increase when measured in the direction of dentine enamel junction. This finding matched well with experiments and implies many useful understanding of biomaterials and applications to new materials.

  • A new BWIM(bridge weigh-in-motion) algorithm using both measured strain and acceleration data is proposed. To consider the effects of bridge vibration on the estimation of moving loads, the dynamic governing equation is applied with the known stiffness and mass properties but damping is ignored. Dynamic displacements are computed indirectly from the measured strains using the beam theory and accelerations are measured directly by accelerometers. To convert a unit moving load to its equivalent nodal force, a transformation matrix is determined. The incompleteness in the measured responses is considered in developing the algorithm. To examine the proposed BWIM algorithm, simulation studies, laboratory experiments and field tests were carried. In the simulation study, effects of measurement noise and estimation error in the vehicle speed on the results were investigated.

  • Detection of gas leak from a tube is a very important issue in the quality control of machines such as the heat exchanger of an air-conditioner, because leakage of operating gas directly reduces the performance of machines. The acoustic emission (AE) method is a common way to detect leak of gas, however its application under the environment of mechanical vibration is restricted since most AE detectors are very sensitive to external vibration noise. In order to overcome this problem, we propose a method based on the mode analysis of the Lamb wave. In this method, the dominant Lamb mode and its frequency are found first, and then a proper band-pass filter is used to retain only this frequency component. In this way, we could improve the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of AE signal generated by gas leak from the tube even under vibratory environment.

  • The purpose of this paper is to decide volume of crack by AE source wave analysis. The material studied in this paper was Titanium Alloy. Transient wave memory has 50 nano sampling time. The response function of specimens and transducer was obtained experimentally by use of specimens and transducer was obtained experimentally by use of breaking pencil lead as a reference simulated AE source, and the source waves were dertermined in terms of energy release-time functions explicitly through a time domain deconvolution. From experimental results, we can determine size of cracked volume.

  • To record and evaluate the flaws which were found during pre-service/in-service inspection performance of nuclear power plants in Korea, the center line beam method described in ASME code and 6 dB drop method stated in CSA code were used. The measured through wall dimensions and lengths by these methods were compared and analyzed in this report. With the measured data analysis, the ekact understanding and use of these methods improves the reliability of flaw sizing and assures the integrity of nuclear power plant components.

  • An ultrasonic resonance scattering spectroscopy technique is developed and applied for reconstructing elastic constants of a transversely isotropic cylindrical component. Immersion ultrasonic measurements are performed on tube samples made from a boron/aluminum composite material to obtain resonance frequencies and dispersion curves of different guided wave modes propagating in the tube. Theoretical analysis on the acoustic resonance scattering from a transversely isotropic cylindrical tube is also performed, from which complete backscattering and resonance scattering spectra and theoretical dispersion curves are calculated. A sensitive change of the dispersion curves to the elastic properties of the composite tube is observed for both normal and oblique incidences; this is exploited for a systematic evaluation of damage and elastic constants of the composite tube samples. The elastic constants of two boron/aluminum composite tube samples manufactured under different conditions are reconstructed through an optimization procedure in which the residual between the experimental and theoretical phase velocities (dispersion curves) is minimized.

  • The incomplete penetration(IP) discontinuity in butt joint weld, which is detected during safety analysis of the steel bridge by nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method, is classified as unacceptable defect according to the NDE codes and standards. In fact, there are a little allowance in butt joint weld in the view point of design criterion, and also detected IP discontinuity should be classified and evaluated for the fatigue strength and residual life estimation. In this study, we performed fatigue test to evaluate the fatigue strength of high strength steel(SWS490A) containing IP discontinuities in various size, the results compared and classified according to the bridge construction standard specification which published by korea administration of construction and traffic. Experimental results could be used to evaluate and estimate the IP discontinuities considering different stress range in butt joint bridge weld during periodic safety inspection.
