  • We review discharge characteristics of fluorescent lamps having noncircular cross sections. The developmental and theoretical history of noncircular cross-section lamps is summarized chronologically. In particular, discharge characteristics of noncircular cross-section lamps will be summarized and analyzed including plasma contraction, electron temperature, and ambipolar diffusion loss, which might give us some insights into the way to develop more efficient and uniform flat fluorescent lamps, which have recently arisen as a new light source of large-size backlight units for LCD TV applications.

  • Considerable interest has evolved in the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in channels of noncircular cross section in compact heat exchanges. Analytical solution was developed for prediction of the flow rate and maximum velocity in steady laminar flow of any incompressible, time-independent non-Newtonian fluids in straight closed and open channels of arbitrary, but axially unchanging cross section. The geometric parameters and function of shear describing the behavior of the fluid model were evaluated for fluid flow among a bundle of rods arranged in triangular and square array. Numerical values of dimensionless maximum velocities, mean velocities, pressure-drop-flow parameters and friction factors were evaluated as a function of porosity and pitch-to-radius ratio.

  • A study for a lathe to machine workpiece with noncircular cross-section is presented. The noncircular cutting is accomplished by controlling radial tool position synchronized with revolution angle of the spindle according to the desired cross-sectional shape. A learning control algorithm is suggested for the tool positioning. The learning law of the algorithm is based on pole-zero cancellation, which guarantees the control stability. The control performances are analyzed and simulated on a numerical computer that the effectiveness of the control algorithm is convinced. The algorithm is tested on a conventional NC-lathe which shows some successful results.

  • In order to investigate the effects of cross-sectional shapes on the sound characteristics of polyester fibers, 10 specimens were woven into a twill structure made of round, hollow, triangular, u-shape, cruciform, and composite cross-sectional (▲/▲ ,()/▲, Y/Y) fibers. Their rustling sounds were recorded, and their sound spectra were obtained from FFT analysis. Physical sound parameters (LPT, ΔL, Δf) and Zwicker's psychoacoustic parameters of the loudness(Z), sharpness(Z), roughness(Z), and fluctuation strength(Z) were calculated from the sound spectra. According to noncircular cross-section fibers, the hollow shaped fiber had the highest value of LPT, ΔL, loudness(Z), and fluctuation strength(Z). The triangular shaped fiber had a lower value of LPT, ΔL, loudness(Z), and roughness(Z) than those of the round shaped fiber. Among composite cross-section fibers, C1(▲/▲) and C3 (Y/Y) had higher values of LPT, ΔL, Δf and loudness(Z) but C2(()/▲) had lower values. Also the LPT, ΔL, sharpness(Z), and roughness(Z) values of different denier were similar to each other, but the Δf and loudness(Z) values increased as the denier increased.

  • Measurement of average of heat transfer and friction coefficients were obtained with air flowing through electrically heated ducts having square, rectangular(aspect ration, 5), and triangular cross section for range of surface temperature from $540^{\circ}$to $1780^{\circ}$ R and Reynolds number from 1000 to 330,000. The results indicates that the effect of heat flux on correlations of the average heat transfer and friction coefficients is similar to that obtained for circular tubes in previous investigation and was nearly eliminated by evaluating the physical properties and density of the air a film temperature halfway between the average surface and fluid bulk temperatures, With the Nusselt and Reynolds numbers on the hydraulic diameter of the ducts, the data for the noncircular ducts could be represented by the same equations obtained in the previous investigation for circular tubes. Correlation of the average difference between the surface corner and midwall temperatures for the square duct was in agreement with predicted values from a previous analysis. However, for the rectangular and triangular ducts, the measured corner temperature was greater by approximately 20 and 35 percent, respectively, than the values predicted by analysis.

  • The five punch and die sets are selected as the examples of arbitrary cross sections which have two opposite inclined sides. Two kinds of blank shapes are designed for all cross sections. One(h-b1.) is determined by slip-line theory and the other (G-b1.) is determined conventionally as the similar shapes with the cross sections which were used by Gopinathan. As a result of the experimental procedures, the superiority of the blank shapes designed by slip-line theory is verified in the limiting drawing ratio, the uniformity of cup height and the thickness distributions.

  • The effects of punch and blank shapes in the rectangular cup drawing process are examined experimentally to improve the formabilities. For this purpose, three blank shapes which are h-bl., G-bl., and T-bl., and five punch shape factors which are the ratios of two adjacent side lengths in rectangular cross section are adopted. The constructing methods of the three blank shapes are as follows. The h-bl. is designed by slip-line theory, and the G-bl. is selected for the similar shape to the punch. The T-bl. is obtained by the drawing method which is introduced in the technical references. The five punch shape factors are selected for length/width=1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2. The experimental procedures are performed for all the above forming conditions to investigate and compare the formabilities. As a result, it is verified experimentally that the rectangular cups drawn by the h-bl. are more ideal than those drawn by G-bl. and T-bl.. They have not only higher limiting drawing ratio, more uniformity in drawn cup heights and more ideal thickness distributions, but also need relatively less maximum drawing forces.
