The objectives of the present study are to numerically and experimentally investigate the steady and pulsatile flow phenomena in the circular tubes, to quantitatively compare the flow characteristics of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, and to find meaningful hemodynamic information through the flow analysis in the human blood vessels. The particle image velocimetry is adopted to visualize the flow fields in the circular tube. and the results from the particle image velocimetry are used to validate the results of the numerical analysis. In order to investigate the blood flow phenomena in the circular tube. constitutive equations, which are suitable to describe the rheological properties of the non-Newtonian fluids. are determined, and the steady and pulsatile momentum equations are solved by the finite volume prediction. The velocity vectors of the steady and pulsatile flow in the circular tube obtained by the particle image velocimetry arc in good agreement with those by the numerical analysis. For the given mass flow rate. the axial velocity profiles of the Newtonian and the non-Newtonian fluids appear differently. The pulsatile flow phenomena of the Newtonian and the non-Newtonian fluids are quite different from those of the steady flow.

This paper presents characteristics of steady flow by variation of a combustion chamber and an intake port. Gas flow field inside a combustion chamber is the important factor in improving combustion stability and reduction of emission level. The flow characteristics such as flow coefficient, tumble ratio and swirl ratio are measured by the steady flow rig test with an impulse meter in this study. In the measuring, the valve lifts are varied between 1mm to 10mm. The three combustion chambers and two intake ports were applied to the steady flow apparatus in order to investigate the effect of swirl and tumble on the in-cylinder flow. As a result, tumble ratio were found to be different by variation of the combustion chambers and the intake ports. The data from the present study can be applied to design of a similar engine as basic data.

This paper describes the steady flow characteristics due to PDA and tumble control valve in combustion chamber. We also investigated the flow inclination angle defined as the inverse tangent of non-dimensional rig tumble(NRT) devided by non-dimensional rig swirl(NRS) to find dominant flow direction. So we adapted two different types of PDA valve(port deactivation valve) to strengthen a swirl flow. The in-cylinder swirl flow different tendency between with/without PDA valve. It might be thought to be affected by swirl flow. We could find that tumble ratio and swirl ratio is different by PDA valve. The comparison are taked account of the swirl, the tumble ratio comparison in same mass flow rate. As a result, PDA valve is better than tumble control valve both in steady flow condition and swirl, tumble ratio. The data from present study are available for design of engine as the basic data.
Steady flow bench test is a practical, powerful and widely used test in most engine manufacturers to give a design concept of a new engine. In order to use steady data as a performance index, it is necessary to build some database, which can correlate the port characteristics with engine data. However, it is very hard to investigate all port and valve shapes with experimental tools. The steady flow scheme is relatively simple and its results are bulk ones such as flow rate and momentum of flow. Therefore a CFD code can be easily applied to the port evaluation. In this study, the steady flow test was simulated through two and three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method. For this purpose, the effect of valve curvature on flow rate was estimated by a CFD code. There results were compared with those of real steady flow tests. As a result, the 2-D analysis described the phenomena qualitatively well, and also the results of 3-D analysis were almost consistent with experimental data.
An experimental study on transient critical heat flux (CHF) under flow coastdown has been performed for the water flow in a non-uniformly heated vertical annulus under low flow and a wide range of pressure conditions. The objectives of this study are to systematically investigate the effect of the flow transient on the CHF and to compare the transient CHF with steady-state CHF The transient CHF experiments have been performed for three kinds of flow transient modes based on the coastdown data of a nuclear power plant reactor coolant pump. At the same inlet subcooling, system pressure and heat flux, the effect of the initial mass flux on the critical mass flux can be negligible. However, the effect of the initial mass flux on the time-to- CHF becomes large as the heat flux decreases. The critical mass flux has the largest value for slow flow reduction rate. There is a pressure effect on the ratio of the transient CHF data to steady-state CHF data. Except under low system pressure conditions, the flow transient CHF was revealed to be conservative compared with the steady-state CHF data. Bowling CHF correlation and thermal hydraulic system code MARS show promising results for the prediction of CHF occurrence .

This paper is the first investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in the steady bench. For this purpose, several assumptions used in the steady flow evaluation are examined, comparing the measured and/or processed results by the conventional impulse swirl meter with the ones by the real velocity through a particle image velocimetry. The results show that the most questionable assumption is the solid rotation of swirl. With regard to this assumption, the flow characteristics by the conventional methods are distorted seriously by both of the eccentricity of the swirl center and non-uniform velocity profile along the cylinder radial direction. In addition, the cylinder axial velocity distribution also has the great effect on the flow characteristics.
This study investigated the steady-flow effects present in the numerical computation of the resistance added to a ship in waves. For a ship advancing in the forward direction, a time-domain 3D Rankine panel method is applied to solve the ship motion problem, and the added resistance due to waves is calculated using a near-field method, with the direct integration of the second-order pressure on the hull surface. In the linear potential theory, the steady flow is approximated by the basis potential of a uniform flow or double-body flow in order to linearize the boundary conditions. By applying these two different linearization schemes, the coupling effects between steady and unsteady solutions were examined. Furthermore, in order to analyze the steady-flow effects on the hull geometry, the computation results for two realistic hull forms, a KVLCC2 tanker and DTC containership, were compared. In particular, the mj term, which represents the coupling effects under the body boundary condition, was evaluated considering the geometry of a non-wall-sided ship. Lastly, the characteristics of the linearization schemes were examined in relation to the disturbed waves around a ship and the components of added resistance.
Using a strain-controlled rheometer, the steady shear flow properties of aqueous xanthan gum solutions of different concentrations were measured over a wide range of shear rates. In this article, both the shear rate and concentration dependencies of steady shear flow behavior are reported from the experimentally obtained data. The viscous behavior is quantitatively discussed using a well-known power law type flow equation with a special emphasis on its importance in industrial processing and actual usage. In addition, several inelastic-viscoplastic flow models including a yield stress parameter are employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady shear flow behavior, and then the applicability of these models is also examined in detail. Finally, the elastic nature is explained with a brief comment on its practical significance. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions exhibit a finite magnitude of yield stress. This may come from the fact that a large number of hydrogen bonds in the helix structure result in a stable configuration that can show a resistance to flow. (2) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions show a marked non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior which is well described by a power law flow equation and may be interpreted in terms of the conformational status of the polymer molecules under the influence of shear flow. This rheological feature enhances sensory qualities in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products and guarantees a high degree of mix ability, pumpability, and pourability during their processing and/or actual use. (3) The Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable and have equivalent ability to describe the steady shear flow behavior of concentrated xanthan gum solutions, whereas both the Bingham and Casson models do not give a good applicability. (4) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions exhibit a quite important elastic flow behavior which acts as a significant factor for many industrial applications such as food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing processes.

In this study, the mathematical model on the various complicated levels of the viscous liquid flows in the symmetric channel with the complicated shape was introduced and the assumptions applied to the simplified model was proposed. To analyse the steady cavitation flow, axis transform of physical region to non-dimensional region was performed, and multigrid were generated. Using this model, the steady cavitation flow was calculated, and good coincidence between experiment and calculation was achieved.
In order to investigate systematically the steady shear flow properties of aqueous po1y(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions having various molecular weights and concentrations, the steady flow viscosity has been measured with a Rheometrics Fluids Spectrometer (RFS II) over a wide range of shear rates. The effects of shear rate, concentration, and molecular weight on the steady shear flow properties were reported in detail from the experimentally measured data, and then the results were interpreted using the concept of a material characteristic time. In addition, some flow models describing the non-Newtonian behavior (shear-thinning characteristics) of polymeric liquids were employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady flow behavior, and the applicability of these models was examined by calculating the various material parameters. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) At low shear rates, aqueous PEO solutions show a Newtonian viscous behavior which is independent of shear rate. At shear rate region higher than a critical shear rate, however, they exhibit a shear-thinning behavior, demonstrating a decrease in steady flow viscosity with increasing shear rate. (2) As an increase in concentration and/or molecular weight, the zero-shear viscosity is increased while the Newtonian viscous region becomes narrower. Moreover, the critical shear rate at which the transition from the Newtonian to shear-thinning behavior occurs is decreased, and the shear-thinning nature becomes more remarkable. (3) Aqueous PEO solutions show a Newtonian viscous behavior at shear rate range lower than the inverse value of a characteristic time $1/{\lambda}_E$, while they exhibit a shear-thinning behavior at shear rate range higher than $1/{\lambda}_E$. For aqueous PEO solutions having a broad molecular weight distribution, the inverse value of a characteristic time is not quantitatively equivalent to the critical shear rate, but the power-law relationship holds between the two quantities. (4) The Cross, Carreau, and Carreau-Yasuda models are all applicable to describe the steady flow behavior of aqueous PEO solutions. Among these models, the Carreau-Yasuda model has the best validity.
