  • A number of studies on eco-friendly and healthy building materials are being conducted as modern people are becoming more conscious about health and the environment they live in. Among those materials, studies on Hwangtoh are the most prevalent but due to its strength, crack coming from drying shrinkage, and susceptibility to water, the usage of Hwangtoh is incomplete and limited to be used as a common building material. Cement concrete, considered as one of the most widely used building materials, is extensively used in construction because it is economical, easily accessible and moldable and has proper compressive strength. Due to carbon dioxide created in the process of making cement concrete, it is recognized as pollution. Accordingly, there are a lot of studies on reduction of carbon dioxide in cement concrete industry. There are increasing numbers of researches as well as developments on Hwangtoh or traditional construction materials used in South Korea to reduce the environmental problems. Therefore, this study suggests the basic features of the construction material that can replace cement concrete in the future with the non-sindtered cement mixed with non-sintering hwangtoh which is made with the furnace slag and multiple stimulants.

  • It is estimated that over 2 million tons of non-ferrous wastes are generated after refining. Up to now, most researches were focused on extracting precious metals and there were very few research on the utilization of the slag byproduct. In this study, we studied to evaluate whether copper slag could be used as aggregates in concrete. Fresh mortar were evaluated on the particle size and replacement ratio of the copper slag with river-sand. Experimental results indicated that flow, air content and drying shrinkage of concrete varied with particle size, which confirmed that proper classification of copper slag is very important. And, setting time and unit weight of the concrete increased with replacement ratio. When particle size of the slag was similar to the river-sand, concrete with copper slag showed slump, air content, setting time, drying shrinkage and unit weight became larger compared to the concrete using river-sand only. Therefore, it is believed that proper classification and replacement ratio should be optimized for the effective use of slag in concrete.

  • Recently, the interest of precast concrete is increased for rapid construction in construction fields. Experimental study about the shear performance of the joint between hollow core slabs which have internal core to reduce their weight was performed. Main test variables were thickness of the topping concrete and existence of the wiremesh. Total 8 specimens including 4 in-plane shear and 4 out of plane shear were tested. Test results were analyzed in terms of cracking load, failure load, failure aspect, stiffness and ductility, and compared its design load to develop optimum design details. Test results indicated that the shear performance of the non-shrinkage mortar specimen was similar to that of 30mm thickness topping concrete specimen, and the effect of wiremesh reinforcement did not affect the failure load or stiffness of the specimens but the increase of ductility. And this paper presents the comparison results of the test results and design load to provide the optimum detail of the joint design between the hollow core slabs.

  • A precast concrete deck system is considered an effective alternative in terms of its rapid construction and quality assurance than cast-in-place concrete deck. In precast concrete deck system, structural performance and serviceability are mostly determined by the connection methods between the precast decks. This research proposes more improved precast deck system with asymmetric ribbed connection details improving the disadvantage of previous precast deck system such as difficulties in assembling precast decks. And in this precast deck system, a separate form is not required at the site because partition wall of the precast decks serves as a form when placing non-shrinkage mortar in the connection part of the precast decks. Therefore, rapid construction is possible. Flexural performance is verified through load tests considering main parameter such as rib length in the precast deck connection. From the test results, it can be inferred that the development of the rebar and prevention of adhesion failure in the partition wall of the precast deck system are important factors in securing the flexural performance. Although the structural performance of the precast deck system with asymmetric connection details is gradually reduced as the rib length in the precast deck connection increases, the proposed precast deck system shows sufficient flexural performance and can be applied to the connection part of precast decks effectively.
