Thirty sediment samples of the <63${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ fraction collected from the southwestern coast of Korea were analysed for their heavy metal (Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb) concentration. The results show that sediment texture plays a controlling role on the total metal concentrations and their spatial distribution. A single lM HCl extraction procedure was used in order to assess the environmental risk of heavy metals in bottom sediments. The non-residual fraction was the most abundant pool for Mn and Pb in most samples, which means that this metals are highly avaliable in these sediments. Cr, Ni, Fe, Co, Zn and Cu were mainly associated with the residual fraction, suggesting that their concentrations are controlled significantly by transport processes with the fine particles as carriers from diffuse pollution source. Concentration enrichment ratios(CER) were calculated from the non-residual contents and their values allowed us to classify the sediments according to their environmental risk.

Fractional compositions and leaching potentials of Cd, Cu and Zn were investigated in the soils which had been disposed with the metal processing wastes, tungsten mine tailings and low quality coal mine area. Total concentrations of metals in these soils were higher than in non-polluted paddy and upland soils. Fractions of Cd, Cu and Zn were mostly reducible, organic and residual forms, but varied with origins of wastes. Residual fraction was a predominant form in the nonpolluted soils. Leaching potentials of metals were higher in polluted soils than in non-polluted soils. Metals leached were higher at pH 4.0 than 7.0 and increased with the duration time. After 25 to 35 hrs, metals released from soils reached a pseudoequilibrium. Leaching potential of metals in non-polluted soils was low due to high percentage of residual fractions.

In this study, experiments on total digestion and sequential extraction were conducted in order to understand total metal contents, and mobility, bioavaliability and toxicity of metals in marine dredged sediment from Busan New Port. The total concentrations of arsenic and heavy metals in the dredged sediment were relatively low as follows: Al (2.36~2.96 wt.%), As (1.6~3.3 mg/kg), Ba (30.0~33.8 mg/kg), Cd (0.12~0.18 mg/kg), Cr (27.5~35.0 mg/kg), Cu (11.3~15.0 mg/kg), Fe (2.91~3.51 wt.%), Mn (324~408 mg/kg), Ni (18.8~23.8 mg/kg), Pb (23.8~31.3 mg/kg), and Zn (70.0~86.3 mg/kg). In addition, it was found that most of Al (87.5~95.9%), As (74.1~93.8%), Ba (71.8~77.6%), Cr (69.5~94.3%), Cu (50.0~78.7%), Fe (70.8~87.6%), Ni (64.5~75.3%), Pb (53.4~64.3%), and Zn (62.5~81.7%) existed in the residual fraction, meaning that those elements might come from natural sources. On the other hand, Cd and Mn were present mainly in the non-residual fraction. Due to low concentrations of toxic heavy metals and high percentage of residual fraction, it could be possible to reuse the dredged sediment for bricks, pavement base material, etc.
The present study was carried out to investigate the P fractions of surfical sediment of Dongjin sea area. Furthermore, potential released loading of adsorbed and non-apatite inorganic phosphorus were investigated in the sediment of Dongjin sea area. The contents of phosphorus fractions of the surficial sediment in Dongjin sea area were adsorbed-P 0.06%, nonapatite inorganic-P 13.02%, apatite-P 60.22%, and residual-P 26.70%. The most abundant fraction was apatite-P, residual-P, nonapatite inorganic-P, and adsorbed-P followed it. Potential released loading of adsorbed and non-apatite inorganic phosphorus surveyed 2.6 and 597ton respectively. These results show that sediment-managing and interception from external pollution are needed for water environmental maintenance of Dongjin sea area.
A large residual fraction of aliphatic components of diesel prevails in soil, which has adverse effects on the environment. This study identified the most bio-recalcitrant aliphatic residual fraction of diesel through total petroleum-hydrocarbon fractional analysis. For this, the strain Acinetobacter sp. K-6 was isolated, identified, and characterized and investigated its ability to degrade diesel and n-alkanes (C18, C20, and C22). The removal efficiency was analysed after treatment with bacteria and nutrients in various soil microcosms. The fractional analysis of diesel degradation after treatment with the bacterial strains identified C18-C22 hydrocarbons as the most bio-recalcitrant aliphatic fraction of diesel oil. Acinetobacter sp. K-6 degraded 59.2% of diesel oil and 56.4% of C18-C22 hydrocarbons in the contaminated soil. The degradation efficiency was further improved using a combinatorial approach of biostimulation and bioaugmentation, which resulted in 76.7% and 73.7% higher degradation of diesel oil and C18-C22 hydrocarbons, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that the removal of mid-length, non-volatile hydrocarbons is affected by the population of bio-degraders and the nutrients used in the process of remediation. A combinatorial approach, including biostimulation and bioaugmentation, could be used to effectively remove large quantities of aliphatic hydrocarbons persisting for a longer period in the soil.
The first esterification reactor in the continuous polymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been analyzed by solving the material balances for the two-phase system with respect to the solubility of terephthalic acid. The Newton-Raphson method was used to solve the material balance equations instead of the Simplex method that is frequently used for finding a minimum point of a residual rather than a solution of an equation. A solution for the material balance equations, with the constraint of non-zero liquid phase fraction, could not be obtained with the solubility data of Yamada et al., but could be obtained with solubilities over a minimum value that is larger than their data. Thus, the solubility data of Yamada et al. are considered to be too small. On the other hand, the solubility data of Baranova and Kremer are so large that they gave a solution with the liquid phase only. Based on our results, several typical solubility curves satisfying the constraint of a non-zero liquid phase fraction are suggested in this study; we studied the reaction characteristics of the system using these curves. A higher temperature and a lower pressure are preferred for reducing the content of diethylene glycol.
In this study, the first drawing die for the production of coil wedge is redesigned in order to enhance properties such as dimensional accuracy, dimensional uniformity, non-magnetism, and residual stress. The equivalent strain distribution is observed to be asymmetric at certain corners of the product and un-filling of material is also observed at the same location, based on the results of FEM simulation for the current drawing process. Additionally, a relatively huge amount of deformation is concentrated on the surface of the reference product leading to an increase in magnetic component and surface residual stress. After re-designing the cross-section of the first drawing step process conformed to relatively higher amount of reduction ratio, reduction of both surface residual stress and the volume fraction of magnetic component could be achieved for the finally-drawn coil wedge product.

The objectives of this study was to assess pollution level and contamination status on tailings and soil in the vicinity of four disused metal mines in Kangwon province. As the result of total metal concentrations analysis, the pollution degree of tailings and soil decreased in the order of Wondong > Second Yeonhwa > Sinyemi ${\fallingdotseq}$ Sangdong mines. Total metal concentrations of mine tailings in this study were $1.2{\sim}78.2$ and $1.1{\sim}80.6$ times higher than those in the background soil and the tolerable levels suggested by Kloke, respectively. From these results, we found that tailings served as contamination source of nearby soil. According to sequential extraction of metals, large proportion of heavy metals in all mine tailings existed in the form of a residual fraction, and heavy metals in non-residual form was mainly associated with Fe-Mn oxide fraction and sulfidic-organic fraction. Fe-Mn oxide fraction and sulfidic-organic fraction of heavy metals may be released into and contaminated the nearby environment under the oxidation or reduction condition in long-term. In particular, the proportions of the exchangeable and carbonate fraction of Cd in mine tailings from Second Yeonhwa mine were relatively high. This suggests that Cd may be easily released into and contaminated the nearby environment in the near time. Concentrations of heavy metals in mine tailings and the nearby soil exceeded the standard (agricultural area) of Soil Environment Conservation Law. So it was thought that remediation for mine tailings and the nearby soil is needed. The pollution indices of the samples in this study were for higher than 1.0 and the pollution degree was very serious. Priority remediation site for these mines was Wondong. As Results of danger indices, it was showed that exchangeable form in Wondong and Fe-Mn oxide form in the rest mines should be removed preferentially.
Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a representative dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) and has contaminated substance environments including soil and groundwater due to leakage and careless. DNPAL, has been treated by surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR). After application of SEAR, groundwater contains still surfactant as well as little amount of residual TCE. Permeable reactive barrier using zero-valent iron (ZW) is a very effective technology to treat the residual TCE in groundwater. In this study, the effect of the residual surfactant on the reductive dechlorination of residual TCE was investigated using ZVI. Mixed surfactant composed of nonioinic surfactant and cationic surfactant was used as a residual surfactant because of toxicity and enhancement of dechlorination rate. Structure of surfactant affected significantly the decrhlorination rate of TCE. Mixed surfactant system with relatively short polyethylene oxide (PEO) chain in nonionic surfactant, cationic surfactant did not affect TCE dechlorination rate. However, mixed surfactant system with relatively long PEO chain in nonionic surfactant shows that TCE dechlorination rate was significantly dependent on fraction of cationic surfactant and HLB of nonionic surfactant. Cationic surfactant with trimethyl ammonium group enhanced reductive dechlorination rate compared to that surfactant with pyridinium group.

Diesel engine is a major source of the air pollution. In general the concentrations of these pollu-tants in diesel engine exhaust differ from values calculated assuming chemical equibrium. Thus the detailed chemical mechanisms by which these pollutions form and the kinetic of these process-es are important in determining emission levels. In this study the computer program has been developed to calculate the required thermodynam-ic properties of combustion products(10 spacies) for both equilibrium and non-equilibrium in cylin-der for diesel engines. Nitric oxide emissions are calculated by using the extended Zeldovich Kinet-ic mechanism with a steady state assumption for the N concentration and equilibrium values used for H, O, $O_2$ and OH concentrations. By the results it is confirmed that developed simulations program with the NO prediction model is validated against residual mass fraction combustion index of Wiebe's functions pre-mixed com-bustion ration fuel injection timing.
