We present a 3-D profiler specially devised for the profile measurement of rough surfaces that are difficult to be measured with conventional non-contact interferometer. The profiler comprises multiple two-point-diffraction sources made of single-mode optical fibers. Test measurement proves that the proposed profiler is well suited for the warpage inspection of microelectronics components with rough surface, such as unpolished backsides of silicon wafers and plastic molds of integrated-circuit chip package.
Determination of the mechanical behaviour of jointed rock masses has been a challenge for rock engineers for decades. This problem is more pronounced for non-persistent jointed rock masses due to complicated interaction of rock bridges on the overall behaviour. This paper aims to study the effect of a non-persistent joint set configuration on the mechanical behaviour of rock materials under both uniaxial and biaxial compression tests using a discrete element code. The numerical simulation of biaxial compressive strength of rock masses has been challenging in the past due to shortcomings of bonded particle models in reproducing the failure envelope of rock materials. This problem was resolved in this study by employing the flat-joint contact model. The validity of the numerical model was investigated through a comprehensive comparative study against physical uniaxial and biaxial compression experiments. Good agreement was found between numerical and experimental tests in terms of the recorded peak strength and the failure mode in both loading conditions. Studies on the effect of joint orientation on the failure mode showed that four zones of intact, transition to block rotation, block rotation and transition to intact failure occurs when the joint dip angle varies from 0° to 90°. It was found that the applied confining stress can significantly alter the range of these zones. It was observed that the minimum strength occurs at the joint dip angle of around 45 degrees under different confining stresses. It was also found that the joint orientation can alter the post peak behaviour and the lowest brittleness was observed at the block rotation zone.
Use of high-quality basestocks is increasing to produce high-performance lubricants. However, their tribological characteristics have not been understood clearly yet. In this study, a newly developed basestock from a fuel hydrocracker and a poly-alpha-olefin are selected and investigated on the properties of lubricants formulated with them. The Lubricants are prepared by blending the basestocks with typical additives such as a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, a dispersant, a detergent and a dispersant-inhibitor package. Frictional and wear-preventing properties are investigated using an oscillating-type wear-testing machine. The contact is a ball-on-disk mode and the testing temperature is varied from room temperature to 200$^{\circ}$C. The results show that their frictional property is varied significantly and that the non-conventional oils result in lower friction and lower wear compared with conventional lubricants, especially at the higher temperatures.

This paper is concerned with the natural vibration characteristics of a rectangular plate with a rectangular hole in contact with the water. The addressed problem was solved by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method combined with the Green function method. This study presents the numerical approach, numerical results and experimental results. In addition, the validity of the approximate formula which mainly depends on the so-called non-dimensionalized added virtual mass incremental factor and the natural mode shape change due to the presence of the water were investigated. Experiments were also carried out to validate theoretical results. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental results. It was found that the effect of a square hole on the natural frequencies of the square plate in contact with water is different from the effect of a square hole on the natural frequencies of the square plate in air and the approximate formula can predict lower natural frequencies in water with a good accuracy.

Usually vibration properties are obtained from frequency response functions or impulse response functions of a system. Since the contact type sensors can affect the characteristics of vibrating systems, the non-contact type sensors such as laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) are being widely used. Currently researches are being carried out in terms of modal analysis using a scanning vibrometer. For the continuous scan; the Chebyshev demodulation (or polynomial) is apparently suggested to extract the mode shapes. With single frequency sinusoidal excitation, this approach is well fitted. In this research, the Chebyshev demodulation technique has been applied to the impact excitation case. The vibration of the tested structure is modeled using impulse response functions. The technique is also adopted to the random excitation case. In order to verify the technique, a simply supported beam was chosen as the test rig. The calculation modules are developed by using MATLAB$\^$(R)/ in WindowsNT$\^$(R)/ environment.
An unconventional fabrication technique of nanoelectrode was developed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and hydrogel. Until now, the precise control of electroactive area down to a few nm2 has always been an obstacle, which limits the wide application of nanoelectrodes. Here, the nanometer-sized contact between the boron-doped diamond (BDD) as conductive AFM tip and the agarose hydrogel as solid electrolyte was well governed by the feedback amplitude of oscillation in the non-contact mode of AFM. Consequently, this low-cost and feasible approach gives rise to new possibilities for the fabrication of nanoelectrodes. The electroactive area controlled by the set point of AFM was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) of the ferrocenmethanol (FcMeOH) combined with quasi-solid agarose hydrogel as an electrolyte. Single copper (Cu) nanoparticle was deposited at the apex of the AFM tip using this platform whose electrocatalytic activity for nitrate reduction was then investigated by CV and Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), respectively.

Recently, the study on the vibration analysis of machinery is greatly important and ESPI is widely used because of its many attractive features. Firstly, ESPI can be used to measure the vibration mode shape and the phase in real-time. Secondly, the conventional measuring methode, such as accelerometers, take much time to measure the whole field of object, but ESPI needs shorter time than other methods. Because ESPI is a field-inspection method. Thirdly, ESPI is a non-contact measuring system. ESPI does not have influence on the specimen. Beyond these features, there are several advantages in ESPI system. In this paper, the Stroboscopic ESPI system is described for measurement of a vibration mode shape. The Stroboscopic ESPI system had been used to visualize the vibration mode shape, in which EO(Electro-Optic)modulator was used to chop CW(Continuous Wavefront)laser. But it was not easy to control EO modulator and quantified the vibration amplitude and the phase of circular metal plate. At first, we found resonant frequency of the specimen by using time-averaged ESPI method. Nextly, the amplitudes of specimen were quantified by using Stroboscopic ESPI and we compare the results which were obtained in several chopping ratio.

The electronic speckle pattern interferometer (ESPI) has been applied to many technical problems such as deformation and displacement measurement, strain visualization and surface roughness monitoring. In this study, we used an ESPI system based on the dual beam speckle interferometer method in order to measure in-plane displacement and vibration mode using the ESIP technique. This research was carried out for the purpose of applying the vibration analysis method employing Electro-Optic holographic interference technique to the vibration analysis of uniform rectangular cantilevers plate(SS400,STS304) with cantilevers span to breadth ratio of 150 by 75. And thickness of 1mm and 0.8mm respectively. We improved the ESPI technique in order to obtain the distribution of displacement component resolved in one direction through a CCD camera combined with an image processing system. To certify and to assess the accuracy in measuring by this ESPI, the results obtained with the speckle method and vibration mode analysis are to be compared with those results by Warbuton's Theoretical expression and vibration made in FEM analysis.

We demonstrate a high-speed recording based on field-induced manipulation in combination with an optical reading of recorded bits on Au cluster films using the atomic force microscope (AFM) and the near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM). We reproduced 50 nm-sized mounds by applying short electrical pulses to conducting tips in a non-contact mode as a writing process. The recorded marks were then optically read using bent fiber probes in a transmission mode. A strong enhancement of light transmission is attributed to the local surface plasmon excitation on the protruded dots.

Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) was proposed in the 1970's as a method of producing the interferogram without using traditional holographic technique. ESPI is more faster than Holography method, because the interferometric image is recorded and updated by the video camera every 1/30 second and whold-field inspection possibly. In this study using a non-contact optical technique that is suited for in-plane and out-of-plane deformation measurement. Thin plate with crack was analyzed by ESPI to determine the characteristics of vibration mode shape and natural frequency. Also, results of the experiment were compared with Finite Element Method(FEM).
