  • A set of surveys was performed at Chungchongbuk-Do in 1997 in order to analyze energy related in rice production. Four cases in rice farming were surveyed : traditional farming, no chemical farming, duck farming, mud snail farming. The farmer in traditional fanning has used chemical fertilizers and chemicals such as general farmers. The farmer in no chemical farming has used chemical fertilizers and manure but has not use chemicals. The farmer in duck farming has not used chemical fertilizers and chemicals but brought up duck in paddy. The farmer in mud snail has not used chemical fertilizers and chemicals but brought up mud snail in paddy. The animals n paddy as like duck and mud snail not only eat weeds and insect but also input fertile material by excretion. The results of energy analysis are as follows 1. In view of energy, the duck farming was the most efficient of four cases. The mud snail farming was less efficient than the duck farming, the traditional farming was less efficient than the mud snail farming, the na chemical farming was less efiicierrt than the traditional farming. 2. Relatively to amount of product, non renewable energy was used more in traditional farming than other cases and renewable energy was used more in no chemical farming than other cases. 3. The reason of low energy efficiency in the no chemical farming was to input fertilizers and manure so much. So to input nutrients excessively in order not to use chemicals can make rice farming to be inefficient in a view of energy. 4. The farming to bring up animals in paddy was more sustainable than other cases because input of non renewable energy could be decreased. But in order to make it to be more sustainable, should be developed cultivation method to decrease input of non renewable direct energy such as fossil fuel and electricity .

  • A recycling soap was prepared from non-cooking oils. The effects of physlcal and chemical properties of the recycling soap on biodegradation are expected to be different due to the thermal histories of the non-cooking oils. Therefore, the biodegradation rate of the recycling soap was studied by using Klebssella Pneumoniae(K. pneumoniae), and the growth rate of K. pnewoniae in soap solution was observed. The biodegradation rate of the recycling soap appeared to be slower as the thermal histories of the non-cooking oils became larger. This might be resulted from hydrolysis, in which the ester bonds in the oils are broken to produce hydroxyl group. It was also observed that the growth rate of the microorganism decreased with the increase in the thermal histories of the oils. As a result, it is desired that recycling soap should be produced from the non-cooking oils with the prober ranges of thermal histories to reduce water contamination. The non-cooking oils with larger thermal histories are considered to be recycling through the cracking process before used. Key Words : non-cooking oils, recycling soap, thermal history, biodegradation, microorganism growth.

  • Due to the aging, advancement, and complexity of chemical facilities, non-routine work such as facility inspection, repair, or maintenance work is increasing. Of the 1,483 accidents that occurred over the past 10 years at chemical product manufacturing sites subject to PSM, accidents that occurred during non-routine work accounted for 56% (932 Cases) of the total. It can be seen that more accidents occur during non-routine work than during routine work. In particular, in order to improve the economy and efficiency of factory operation, there are cases where some facilities are stopped without stopping the entire factory and then inspection, repair, or maintenance work is performed while isolated from the operating facilities. Therefore, first, a safe isolation method must be selected by establishing an isolation standard (Baseline Isolation Standard) based on the chemicals handled, operating conditions, and risk level of the equipment in the chemical plant. Second, since current domestic laws and standards do not suggest the need for specific quarantine standards, it is necessary to institutionalize the preparation of quarantine standards. Technical and institutional improvements are needed to prevent fires, explosions, and poisoning accidents caused by leaks of chemical substances.

  • Objectives: Acute exposure to high concentrations of chemicals can occur when a chemical accident takes place. As such exposure can cause ongoing environmental pollution, such as in the soil and groundwater, there is a need for a tool that can assess health effects in the long term. The purpose of this study was assessing the health risks of residents living near a chemical accident site due to long-term exposure while considering the temporal concentration changes of the toxic chemicals leaked during the accident until their extinction in the environment using a multimedia environmental dynamics model. Methods: A health risk assessment was conducted on three cases of formaldehyde chemical accidents. In this study, health risk assessment was performed using a multimedia environmental dynamics model that considers the behavior of the atmosphere, soil, and water. In addition, the extinction period of formaldehyde in the environment was regarded as extinction in the environment when the concentration in the air and soil fell below the background concentration prior to the accident. The subjects of health risk assessment were classified into four groups according to age: 0-9 years old, 10-18 years old, 19-64 years old, and over 65 years old. Carcinogenic risk assessment by respiratory exposure and non-carcinogenic risk assessment by soil intake were conducted as well. Results: In the assessment of carcinogenic risk due to respiratory exposure, the excess carcinogenic risk did not exceed 1.0×10-6 in all three chemical accidents, so there was no health effect due to the formaldehyde chemical accident. As a result of the evaluation of non-carcinogenic risk due to soil intake, none of the three chemical accidents had a risk index of 1, so there was no health effect. For all three chemical accidents, the excess cancer risk and hazard index were the highest in the age group 0-9. Next, 10-18 years old, 65 years old or older, and 19-64 years old showed the highest risk. Conclusion: This study considers environmental changes after a chemical accident occurs and until the substance disappears from the environment. It also conducts a health risk assessment by reflecting the characteristics of the long-term persistence and concentration change over time. It is thought that it is of significance as a health risk assessment study reflecting the exposure characteristics of the accident substance for an actual chemical accident.

  • Activated carbon fiber (ACF) surfaces are modified using an electron beam under different aqueous solutions to improve the NO gas sensitivity of a gas sensor based on ACFs. The oxygen functional group on the ACF surface is changed, resulting in an increase of the number of non-carbonyl (-C-O-C-) groups from 32.5% for pristine ACFs to 39.53% and 41.75% for ACFs treated with hydrogen peroxide and potassium hydroxide solutions, respectively. We discover that the NO gas sensitivity of the gas sensor fabricated using the modified ACFs as an electrode material is increased, although the specific surface area of the ACFs is decreased because of the recovery of their crystal structure. This is attributed to the static electric interaction between NO gas and the non-carbonyl groups introduced onto the ACF surfaces.

  • A numerical study was conducted to have the effect of $CO_2$ addition to fuel on the chemical reaction mechanism with the change of the initial concentration of $CO_2$ and the axial velocity gradient. From this study, it was found that there were two serious effects of $CO_2$ addition on a non-premixed flame ; a diluent effect by the reactive species reduction and chemical effect of the breakdown of $CO_2$ by the third-body collision and thermal dissociation. Especially, the chemical effect was serious at the lower velocity gradient of the axial flow. It was certain that the mole fraction profile of $CO_2$ was deflected and CO was increased with the initial concentration of $CO_2$. It was also ascertained that the breakdown of $CO_2$ would cause the increasing of CO mole fraction at the reaction region. It was also found that the addition of $CO_2$ did not alter the basic skeleton of $H_2-O_2$ reaction mechanism, but contributed to the formation and destruction of hydrocarbon products such as HCO. The conversion of CO was also suppressed and $CO_2$ played a role of a dilution in the reaction zone at the higher axial velocity gradient.

  • Absorption rate of carbon dioxide was measured in the aqueous polyacrylamide (PAA) solution containing triethanolamine (TEA) of $0{\sim}2.0\;kg\;mol/m^3$ in a flat-stirred vessel with an impeller of 0.05 m and agitation speed of 50 rpm at $25^{\circ}C$ and 101.3 kPa. The chemical absorption rate of $CO_2$ was estimated by mass transfer mechanism based on the film theory using the physicochemical properties containing the liquid-side mass transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ and the kinetics of reaction between $CO_2$ and TEA to compare with the measured rate. The aqueous PAA solution acted as a reducing agent by viscoelastic property of non-Newtonian liquid based on the same viscosity of the solution.

  • Green-light emitting $BaMgAl_{10}O_{19}:Mn^{2+}$ (BAM:Mn) phosphor particles were prepared by spray Pyrolysis. The effect of reactor temperature and flow rate of carrier gas in the spray Pyrolysis on the morphology, crystallinity and photoluminescence characteristics under vacuum ultraviolet were investigated. The morphology of the as-Prepared Particles obtained by spray Pyrolysis had spherical shape and non-aggregation characteristics regardless of the reactor temperature. The spherical shape of the as-prepared Particles obtained by spray pyrolysis at low temperature disappeared after Post-treatment. On the other hand the as-Prepared Particles obtained by spray Pyrolysis at $1600^{\circ}C$ maintained spherical shape and non-aggregation characteristics after post-treatment at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 3 h under reducing atmosphere. The BAM:Mn Phosphor Particles Prepared by spray Pyrolysis at different reactor temperatures had pure crystal structure and high photoluminescence intensities under vacuum ultraviolet after post-treatment. BAM:Mn phosphor particles prepared by spray Pyrolysis at low How rate of carrier gas had complete spherical shape and filed morphology and high photoluminescence intensity after post-treatment under reducing atmosphere.

  • The non porous and porous 4-vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene ion exchange resins were synthesized by the suspension polymerization method. The functional groups of these resins were identified by means of infrared adsorption spectroscopy. The pore volume and pore spectra of these synthesized resins were determined with a mercury porosimeter. The influence of diluent and percentage of divinylbenzene on the pore size and volume of the porous 4-vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene copolymer, P-4VPDVB, 50-100 mesh was discussed. The ion exchange capacity of non-porous and porous 4-vinylpyridine divinylbenzene resins was 5.0meq/g, respectively.

  • A series of compounds consisting of 4'-oxybenzylidene-4-n-butylaniline, a mesogen, and a p-substituted phenoxyterephthaloyl structure a non-mesogen, interconnected through a central hexamethylene spacer were synthesized and their thermal behavior and liquid crystallinity were studied. p-Substituents included in this study are H, Cl, CN, $NO_2,\;n-C_4H_9O$ and phenyl groups. The compounds having phenyl and $n-C_4H_9O$ substituents are enantiotropic and form smectic-A(SA) and nematic (N) phases. The compound with $NO_2$ substituent is monotropic and forms only a nematic phase on heating the solid, whereas it forms nematic as well as $S_A$ phases on cooling the isotropic liquid. The rest compounds were found to be non-liquid crystalline. This is in great contrast to the fact that the monomesogenic model compound 4'-n-hexyloxybenzylidine-4-n-butylaniline forms $S_B,\;S_C,\;S_A$ and N phases enantiotropically.
