Traditionally aircraft had descended in steps to level at the MDA(Minimum Descent Altitude) during the conduct of non-precision approach. This "de-stabilized" method of flying an instrument approach procedure is considered as a major contributing factor in CFIT(Controlled Flight Into Terrain) accident and increasing pilot workload. In the effort to reduce CFIT accident and pilot workload, VNAV(Vertical Navigation) Approach has been suggested as means to manage the vertical component of non-precision approach procedure.[1] But In the actual circumstances in Korea, VNAV has not been using to reduce them because of many restriction facts and no published VNAV chart in particular airport. Therefore we are suggesting Constant Vertical Speed Approach Method, which is required few restriction facts, and the pilots who are using this method will experience a similar method like a Glideslope during proceeding non-precision approach. Consequently, We are expecting to reduce CFIT accidents and pilot workload.
After a thorough investigation of aviation accidents involving Korean national carriers both inside and outside of Korea and also after reviewing catastrophic events involving foreign carriers in Korea, we found numerous accidents that caused fatalities and serious personal injuries. Although the aircrafts involved were found to have no specific defects, many of the accidents were caused by the pilot's misjudgement according to previous studies. Our research is to find an new procedure to help the prevention of similar accidents by focusing particularly on CFIT accidents during the procedural operations of Non Precision Approach, Circling Approach and Visual Approach. Therefore, we emphasize the significance of this research on the development of the new checklist that will help achieve a safe and effective procedural operation for non precision approaches.
Two-phase self-organizing neuro-modeling (SONM). the global SONM and local SONM, is designed for tracking non-stationary manufacturing processes. Radial basis function (RBF) neural network is employed, and self-tuning estimator is also developed for the determination of RBF network parameters on-line. A pattern recognition approach is presented for identifying a correct RBF neural network, which is used for identifying current manufacturing processes. Experimental results showed that the proposed approach is suitable for tracking non-stationary processes.
Circling to land is a relatively dangerous maneuver. It contains the worst elements of IFR flight. There is a minimum obstruction clearance, a limited space in which to maneuver, an absence of visual reference, and trying to keep the runway in sight while preparing to land. At night it is quite a bit more than dangerous. The required continuous turn in marginal conditions that keeps the airport in sight is hazardous. Therefore, this paper proposes an application of GNSS to circling approach to reduce or remove chances of accidents which may occur under such unfavorable flight conditions. The study reviews relevant documents published by ICAO and FAA and provides scenarios for non-precision and precision approaches and circling approach based on the GNSS for Kimhae airport. Also requirements for the ground facility design are studied and provided.
'Visual segment surface' means a surface that extends from the missed approach point of non precision approaches (or the decision altitude location for approaches with vertical guidance and precision approaches) to the threshold to facilitate the identification of and protection from obstacles in this visual segment of the approach. Validation is the necessary final quality assurance step in the procedure design process, prior to publication. The purpose of validation is the verification of all obstacle and navigation data, and assessment of flyability of the procedure. This paper shows how to apply the protection for the visual segment of the approach procedure, and the results of the validation for visual segment surface conducted at an airport.
An equilibrium approach is suggested as an effective tool for the analysis of sheet metal forming processes on the basis of force balance together with geometric relations and plasticity theroy. In computing a force balance equation, it is required to define a geometric curve approximating the shape of the sheet metal at any step of deformation from the geometric interaction between the die and the deforming sheet. Then the geometic informations for contacting and non-contacting sections of the sheet metal such as the number and length of both non-contact region, contact angle, and die radius of contact section are known from the geometric forming curve and utilized for optimization by force balance equation. In computation, the sheet material is assumed to be of normal amisotropy and rigid-phastic workhardening. It has been shown that there are good agreements between the equilibrium approach and FEM computation for the benchmark test example and auto-body panels whose sections can be assumed in plane-strain state. The proposed equilibrium approach can thus be used as a robust computational method in estimating the forming defects and forming severity rather quickly in the die design stage.
In micro automation technology, the concurrent realization of a high resolution and a large operating rage has been achieved by a dual actuator, usually called by piggy-back system, conventionally. But, because of its manufacturing cost, the complexity of control, and the limit of overall bandwidth, the contract-free and single servo actuators have been suggested with specific applications. In this paper, we suggest a novel non-contact surface actuator suing combination of the Lorentz force and the magnetized force, and discuss the actuating principles including an analytical approach. Differently from the existing planar system, an operating range of the suggested system can be expanded by an additional attachment of active elements. Therefore, it is estimated to be suitable for the next-generation moving system.
Feature based design approach is widely studied for the application of mechanical part design and process planning. Mechanical parts are associated with volumetric form features in nature. Therfore, one of the important characteristics that reside in the form feature research until now is that features have been studied in connection with CAPP for material removal. We studied the application of feature based design for ship structure design. Ship structure has interesting nature that tis distinct from mechanical parts. Among these are multiple cell structure, non-volumetric part and production by welding or assembling. An idea of applying feature based design paradigm for design, process planning, cost analysis and engineering calculation was shown. Non-manifold geometric modeler ACIS was adopted to fully benefit from the non-manifold nature of ship structure.
This study described computer aided die design system for cold forging of non-axisymmetric parts. To design the die of cold forging. an integrated approach based on a rule-base system and commercial F. E. code were adopted. This system is implemented on the personal computer and its environment is a commercial CAD package named as AutoCAD. The system includes four modules. In the initial data input module, the variables which are necessary to design of die are inputted by user and die material are selected from the database. In the analysis and redesign module, stress distrubution action on the designed die is analyzed by commercial FEM code NISA II. The designed die is modified to prevent failure in both states of stress free and pressurizing. The developed system provides powerful capabilities for die design of non-axisymmetric parts.
