  • Social survey and auditory experiment on residential noises such as floor impact, air-bome, bathroom, drainage and traffic noises were conducted to investigate the effects of sensitivity and background noise levels on subjective response to residential noises. Results of survey showed that multiple questions for sensitivity to noise have a more power for discrimination against subjective response to noise than single question. It was also found that the correlation between sensitivity and annoyance was relatively low, but the differences in annoyance between sensitivity groups were significant. Result of auditory experiment showed that effects of sensitivity on annoyance were different according to noise type and noise level. It was also shown that the difference in annoyance between the lowest sensitive stoup and the highest sensitive group was significant in low noise level. The effects of background noise on subjective responses to noise was also different according to noise source and noise level, and were significant in low noise level of airborne and drainage noise.

  • Sensitivity analysis and structural modification technique are used to reduce the interior noise of a passenger car. The sensitivity analysis for the noise level at the rear seat shows that the stiffness change at the front lower member and the rear roof rail are sensitive. Using the structural modification method, we verified that the reinforcements at those members decrease the noise transfer function from the body to the rear seat. The combined application of the sensitivity analysis and structural modification method can decrease the noise level effectively.

  • The response to noise may differ depending on the respondent's noise sensitivity. In this study, it was investigated that the noise sensitivity, the annoyance and disturbance of floor impact noise and opinions on their neighbors. The questionnaire respondents were divided into two or three groups based on noise sensitivity, and annoyance and disturbance on floor impact sound were compared. The noise sensitivity questionnaire method was presented. The questionnaire survey was conducted on 233 residents of Seoul, Gyeonggi - do area. As a result of the questionnaire survey, when the sensitivity group was divided into three groups, it was found that there was a significant difference between the groups with the noise sensitivity and the disturbance reaction. As a result of the opinions on their neighbors, positive responses to neighbors increased with age. Also, it was found that there was a low perception of inter - floor noise and life disturbance of the group having positive feelings about neighbors.

  • Vehicle interior noise has become increasingly important in this recent years. The noise of a vehicle is one of the important problems in a vehicle design. The interior noise is caused by various vibration sources of vehicle compartment. The booming noise of a vehicle can be significantly affected by vibrations transmitted from engine excitation forces to the vehicle body. Specially, we are interested in the state of transmission paths such as engine mounts to reduce noise in a vehicle compartment. In this paper, we have been calculated the contribution of each transmission path such as engine mounts to interior noise. To identify contribution of each input sources and transmission paths to output, the effectiveness of each input component to output is calculated. Sensitivity analysis is carried out for investigation of contribution to output due to input variations. With the simulation of magnitude and phase change of inputs using vector synthesis diagram, the trends of synthesized output vector are obtained. As a result, we suggested sensitivity analysis of vector synthesis as a technique of prediction and control for noise in a vehicle compartment.

  • Urban residents in crowded complexes are making increasing civil complaints about noise and demanding pleasant and comfortable residential environments. Because noise is one of the most important factors related to urban residents' dissatisfaction with their living environments, the present study investigates the direct and indirect effects of noise-related outdoor environmental factors on residential level satisfaction, using noise level data from 29 noise-measuring stations in Seoul. From 62 multi-family apartment complexes near these stations, the authors collected GIS-based environmental attribute data, as well as survey data including the residents' personal characteristics and indicators designed to measure latent psychological characteristics: noise sensitivity and residential noise level satisfaction. This study then utilized structural equation models to analyze the direct variables influencing the latent variables of noise sensitivity and residential noise level satisfaction, as well as the complex relationships among all variables. The result showed that residents who are exposed to less noise, possibly due to living in apartments facing relatively quiet roads, protected by soundproof walls, or surrounded by densely planted trees, tend to be less noise sensitive, which makes them more satisfied with the ambient noise level. Therefore, critical outdoor environmental variables can be used to reduce noise sensitivity and improve residential noise level satisfaction.

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the covariation between the extent of activity disturbances and general annoyance, and to study the relation between the extent of annoyance reactions and noise sensitivity. This paper presents a description of a model developed by taking into account self-rated noise sensitivity and noise rating(i,e., annoyance) for road traffic. The results indicate that there are large variations in noise sensitivity which is independent on the level of noise. It is also found that the extent of all activity disturbances decreased with decreased general annoyance. The paper suggests a normative approach to predicting individual's reaction to noise exposure, based on a periodically observed relationship between the prevalence of activity disturbance and annoyance. The model also predicts a road traffic-noise adaptatin level for each individual.

  • Purpose: The present study was conducted in order to examine claustrophobia, noise sensitivity and vital signs according to anxiety sensitivity level in patients who have Magnet Resonance Imaging(MRI). Methods: With 100 outpatients, we measured anxiety sensitivity, claustrophobia, noise sensitivity and vital sign before and after MRI. Measuring tools were ASI, CLQ-M, and NSI. Data were collected from February to March, 2008. Results: The ASI score was higher in women than in men(p < .05), and no statistically significant difference was observed according to age, region of scanning, experience in MRI, and the use of contrast agent. Both men and women patients showed the same ASI score and decrease in CLQ M and NSI between before and after MRI. In women, ASI, CLQ M and NSI were in positive correlation with one another(p < .001), and in men, there was no correlation between ASI and CLQ M, and positive correlation was observed with NSI(p < .05). In comparison according to ASI level, blood pressure and pulse rate were not different in men and women. CLQ M was not different in men, but was different in women(p < .001). NSI was different in both men and women(men p < .05; women p < .001). Conclusion: MRI may cause claustrophobia in patients with high anxiety sensitivity, and noise appears to aggravate anxiety. In particular, claustrophobia was more serious in women than in men. Therefore, it is necessary to develop nursing interventions to reduce anxiety sensitivity particularly for female patients, and to make plans to educate and lower noise before MRI in order to reduce claustrophobia.

  • = ABSTRACT =Objectives : We evaluated the effect of the aircraft noise on the behavior and affect status of the local elementary school students. Methods : The daytime noise levels of the exposed and control areas were compared and the self answered questionnaires from 272 students and their parents of the exposed area and 91 of the control area were collected. The questionnaires are regarding the noise sensitivity and the psychosocial status of the students, noise sensitivity of the parents and the parents' behavioral evaluation for their children. Results : The mean noise level of the exposed area (67.6 dB(A)) showed higher level than the control area (57.1 dB(A), 58.2 dB(A), 60.2 dB(A)) and it was statistically significant. The mean score for noise sensitivity and the mean score for brief mental exam. in the exposed students were lower than the mean scores in the control group but they were not statistically significant (p=0.056 & 0.165). The mean score for behavioral evaluation of students by their parents in the exposed area(15.5) was higher than the mean score in the control group(13.2) and it was statistically significant(p=0.043). The mean score for noise sensitivity in the exposed parent(27.5) was higher than the mean score in the control group(24.1) and it was statistically significant(p=0.045). Conclusions : This study revealed that the noise sensitivity of the parents affected the behavioral evaluation of the students than noise-exposure itself. The further study is needed to evaluate relationship between aircraft noise and it's effect on children's health.

  • In this paper, the effects of phase noise on the radar system were analyzed in terms of 3 point of view. The impact(s) on the compressed pulse waveform, the FMICW(Frequency Modulated Interrupted Continuous Wave) radar performance and the receiver sensitivity were investigated. From the investigation, it was indicated that the phase noise over 10 kHz offset frequency makes the side lobe level of compressed pulse worse. Also it was founded that the FMICW radar performance, especially at the noise level of range profile, is related to the phase noise. Finally, the investigation showed that the phase noise at local oscillator affects the receiver sensitivity.
