This study aims to develop an improved Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) reconstruction algorithm using anisotropic total variation (ATV) minimization to enhance the image quality of low-dose cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The algorithm first applies a filter that integrates the Shepp-Logan filter into a cosine window function on all projections for impulse noise removal. A total variation objective function with anisotropic penalty is then minimized to enhance the difference between the real structure and noise using the steepest gradient descent optimization with adaptive step sizes. The preserving parameter to adjust the separation between the noise-free and noisy areas is determined by calculating the cumulative distribution function of the gradient magnitude of the filtered image obtained by the application of the filtering operation on each projection. With these minimized ATV projections, voxel-driven backprojection is finally performed to generate the reconstructed images. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated with the catphan503 phantom dataset acquired with the use of a low-dose protocol. Qualitative and quantitative analyses showed that the proposed ATV minimization provides enhanced CBCT reconstruction images compared with those generated by the conventional FDK algorithm, with a higher contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), lower root-mean-square-error, and higher correlation. The proposed algorithm not only leads to a potential imaging dose reduction in repeated CBCT scans via lower mA levels, but also elicits high CNR values by removing noisy corrupted areas and by avoiding the heavy penalization of striking features.
Excessive vibration in flexible structures is a problem encountered in many different fields, causing fatigue of structural components. Passive techniques, though sometimes limited in their capabilities, have been used in the past to attenuate vibrations. Recently active techniques have been developed to enhance vibration control performance beyond that provided by their passive counterparts. Most often, the focus of active control methods has been to suppress structure displacements. In cases where vibration results in structure failures, displacement suppression may not be the best choice of control approaches (it can, in fact, increase dynamic loads which would be even more harmful to supports) . This paper presents two optimal control methods for attenuating steady state vibrations in flexible structures. One method minimizes shaft displacements while another minimizes dynamic reaction forces. The two methods are applied to a model of a typical flexible structure system and their results are compared. It is found that displacement minimization can increase loads, while load minimization decreases loads.
This study intends to reduce the weight of structure without changing the dynamic characteristics. At first, the Vibration analyses by the Substructure Synthesis Method and FEM using the ANSYS are performed for the engine speed converter to confirm the reliability of the analyzing tools. Weight minimization is performed by the Sensitivity Analysis and the Optimum Structural Modification. To decrease the converter weight ideally, the parts with low sensitivity are to be cut mainly, and the changing quantity of the natural frequency by the cut is to be recovered by the weight modification of the parts with high sensitivity. As the unique mathematical solution for the homogeneous problem( i.e. 0 object function problem) does not exist, the converter is redesigned with much thinner initial thickness. The goal of this study is to recover the dynamic characteristics of redesigned structure to those of the original one. To say in the other words, the modified structure has the same dynamic characteristics and the more lighter weight to compare with the original one. In this analysis, the modification was performed with the redesigned initial thickness of 60 mm and 70 mm. And the numbers of the interesting natural frequencies are 1, 2, 4 respectively. Consequently 27% of weight reduction effects were earned.
Excessive vibration in rotating machinery is a problem encountered in many different fields, causing such difficulties as fatigue of machinery components and failure of supporting bearings. Passive techniques, though sometimes limited in their capabilities, have been used in the past to attenuated vibrations. Recently active techniques have been developed to provide vibration control perform beyond that provided by their passive counters. Most often, the focus of active control methods has been to suppress rotating machinery displacements. In cases where vibration results in bearing failures, displacement suppression may not be the best choice of control approaches (it can, in fact, increase dynamic bearing loads which would be even more harmful to bearings). This paper presents two optimal control methods for attenuating steady state vibrations in rotating machinery. One method minimizes shaft displacements while the other minimizes dynamic bearing reaction forces. The two methods are applied to a model of a typical rotating machinery system and their results are compared. It is found that displacement minimization can increase bearing loads, while bearing load minimization, on the other hand, decreases bearing loads.
Recently to develop an automobile with better prosperities, many researches and investments have been executed. In this paper we intend to improve the automobile properties by reducing the weights of the engine without changing the dynamic characteristics. At first we perform the vibration analysis by the Substructure Synthesis Method and execute the exciting test for the engine model, and observe the coincidences of two results to confirm the reliability of the analyzing tools used. The weight minimization is performed by the Sensitivities of the Natural frequencies of the engine block. To decrease the engine weight ideally, the parts of the sensitivity zero are to be cut mainly, and the changing quantity of natural frequency by the cut is to be recovered by the structural modification for the parts with the good sensitivity. But, as actually the mathematical solution for the homogeneous problem(i.e. 0 object function) do not exist, we hereby redesign the block with much thinner thickness and recover the natural frequencies and natural modes to original structure's by the sensitivity analysis. And the Frequency Response Functions(FRF) are to be observed for the interesting points. In this analysis, the original thickness of the engine model has 8 mm of thickness, and the thickness redesigned is 5 mm and 6 mm. And we are to try to recover the 1, 2, 4, and 5 lower natural frequencies interested.
The active control of noise generated by the compressor and transmitted out of the machine room through the windows is implemented based on the FIR filter. The machine room contains most of noise sources of electric home appliances, air-conditioners and refrigerators, for example. To actively reduce the noise from the machinery room. In this paper, the transfer function of the controller for minimization of the acoustic power transmitted through the windows is mathematically formulated. The transfer functions required for implementation of the active controller are the measured. The measurements are conducted in this initial stage under the operation of the compressor with no load. For improvement of the reliability of the transfer function of the compressor to the acoustic power, additional operational measurements are performed. The real time controller is implemented based on the FIR filter using the measured transfer functions and the performance of the active controller is estimated. Control performance is measured about 3 dB ~ 10 dB in reduction of the sound power at the peaks of the compressor noise.
The quality of various noises generated in the refrigerator is one of the important factors in deciding quality of the product. The main focus of sound control design has been shifted from reduction of sound level to improvement of sound duality for customer's preference. Up to date the purpose of noise control is the minimization of noise level. However despite of gradual decrease of noise level, occasionally the perceptional quality of noise has not been improved. In this paper, the relation between subjective and objective evaluation of sound quality has established and sound quality index is developed using ANN for evaluation of refrigerator's noise of both the starting noise and the stable running noise of compressor. To verify the usefulness of the index, the results in this paper have been compared with those surveyed by Consumer Union in USA.
When the input-output record is available, the identification of a bilinear system is considered. It is assumed that the input is noise free and the output is contaminated by an additive noise. It is further assumed that the covariance matrix of the noise is known up to a factor of proportionality. The extended generalized total least squares (e-GTLS) method is proposed as one of the consistent estimators of the bilinear system parameters. Considering that the input is noise-free and that bilinear system equation is linear with respect to the system parameters, we extend the GTLS problem. The extended GTLS problem is reduced to an unconstrained minimization problem, and is solved by the Newton-Raphson method. We compare the GTLS method and the e-GTLS method in the point of the accuracy of the estimated system parameters.
