In determining properties of ductile cast iron, it is well known that nodularity plays a significant role. Therefore, the national and/or international standards for ductile cast iron such as KS, ISO, ASTM and JIS have specified some methods for evaluating it. However, most of standards have not recommended the methods using image analyzer which is known as an objective analyzing tool for evaluating microstructure. In this study, a reliable method for evaluating nodularity by image analyzing method was proposed, and the result was compared with that from the common counting method proposed in KS D 4302-1999. It was found that there was a reasonable relationship in nodularities measured by these two methods.
The effects of addition of magnesium only and the simultaneous addition of magnesium and aluminum on the graphite morphology of the cast iron with the composition of 3.6wt.% and 2.5wt.%Si poured into shell stack mold were investigated. The nodularity and mechanical properties of the specimen with smaller cross-section were higher than those with langer one, when copper was not added. When the magnesium only was added, the nodularity was decreased with decreased residual magnesium content and the C. V, graphite was obtained with the magnesium content in the range of 0.010~0.015wt.%. When the magnesium and aluminum were added together, the nodularity was decreased with decreased residual magnesium and increased aluminum contents. When copper was added, the volume fraction of pearlite in the matrix, strength and hardness were higher and elongation was lower for specimen with smaller cross-section. The volume fraction of pearlite, strength and hardness were increased and the elongation was decreased with increased copper content for the specimen with C, V, graphite.
각각의 환자군에 대하여 곡선 아래 면적(areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves; 이하 AUCs)을 분석하여 예측력을 평가하였다.
The relationships between nodularity, tensile property and ultrasonic velocity were studied in ductile iron castings having similar matrix structure. Also, the effects of heat treatment and the number of graphite nodules on the ultrasonic velocity were investigated. The results were as follows 1. The ultrasonic velocity increased proportionally with increassing nodularity and tensile strength. 2. The ultrasonic velocity in annealed and normalized state decreased average 1.7% and 3.4% respectively than that in as cast state. 3. The ultrasonic velocity increased with increasing the number of graphite nodules. Therefore, ductile iron castings can be evaluated in the only case of castings having the same manufacturing history by ultrasonic velocity.
Background: Phytoestrogens may be an alternative therapy in control of menopausal symptoms but their definite effects on breast tissue must be determined. Our study aimed to define the clinical and ultrasonographic changes of the breast after use of soy isoflavones in menopausal women. Materials and Methods: Menopausal women with hot flashes were randomly grouped as cases and controls and cases received soy isoflavones for 12 weeks. Breast examination (BE) and ultrasonography (US) were done at 0, 6 and 12 weeks. Tenderness and nodularity on BE were graded 1-4 by breast surgeons. Results: There were 30 women in the case and 26 in the control group. The mean age was 51.3 years and the mean age of menopause was 49.2 years. There was no change in the BE and US at 6 weeks in controls. In the case group, 10% had grade 1 tenderness and 13.3% grade 2 tenderness and grade 1 nodularity in BE accompanied with diffuse small cysts in US. At 12 weeks, there was no change in BE and US in the 2 groups. Conclusions: There was no statistically significant difference in the BE of the 2 groups at 6 and 12 weeks (p value=0.36 and 0.41 for nodularity and tenderness respectively) and in the US results. Although the literature contains many facts concerning PEs and the breast, further prospective studies are needed to identify structural breast changes produced by PEs in order to identify the appropriate dosage and indications of use.
In this study, the microstructure, mechanical properties and high temperature oxidation characteristics of HiSiMo and HiSiMoM ductile iron for exhaust manifold were investigated. The HiSiMoM ductile iron was developed by optimization of alloying element addition and casting design. The exhaust manifold prototype was fabricated using the HiSiMoM iron and this resulted in the weight saving of 0.73kg. The microstructures of the HiSiMo and HiSiMoM irons were similar each other and graphite nodularity was 89% and 93% respectively. Tensile strengths of them were 663.5 and 674.4 MPa and Brinell hardness were 235.3 and 243.9 respectively. Both irons showed parabolic weight gain behavior in high temperature oxidation atmosphere. Oxidation layer was divided into external and internal layers. The weight gain of the HiSiMoM iron was lower than that of the HiSiMo iron after isothermal oxidation test at $900^{\circ}C$. This should be rationalized by higher Si enrichment at the interface of the matrix and internal layer of the HiSiMoM iron.
In this study, we investigated the effect of Sb/RE on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast heavy sectioned, over 250mm thickness, ferritic ductile cast iron. Exothermic and thermal insulation material were equipped on the wall of sand cast mold having the dimensions of $250{\times}250{\times}250$ mm. The nominal composition of the molten metal was controlled to be on the eutectic composition and Sb was added about 0, 0.005 and 0.02% respectively. In the center of as-cast ingot without Sb addition, the solidification of chunky graphite was induced by the eutectic reaction that took long time, which caused the decrease of elongation and impact energy. In case that the value of Sb/RE is 0.8, the solidification of chunky graphite could be suppressed and the improvement of nodularity was observed. On the other hand, the excessive addition of Sb suppressed the solidification of chunky graphite but gave rise to the solidification of flake graphite and the increase of pearlite contents. This results in poor elongation and impact energy which is lower than those in the case of no Sb addition.
SGCI(Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron), CVGCI(CV Graphite Cast Iron) and FGCI(Flake Graphite Cast Iron) having different contents of Mn($0.25%{\sim}0.85%$) and Ni($0.3%{\sim}1.2%$) were produced, respectively. The thermal expansion and thermal conductivity of the cast iron were investigated in the temperature range of $50^{\circ}C{\sim}300^{\circ}C$. As the graphite nodularity of the cast iron increases, thermal expansion coefficient increases, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity to thermal conductivity ratio decrease. The thermal expansion coefficient of the cast iron increases with increasing Mn content and decreases with increasing Ni content. The thermal conductivity of the cast iron decreases with increasing Mn and Ni contents.
The effects of section size and melt holding time on the mechanical properties and microstructure of high silicon ductile cast iron were investigated. The strength, elongation and hardness of the test specimen with smaller cross-section were higher than those with larger one. The nodule count and volume fraction of pearlite of the former were higher than those of the latter. The mechanical properties decreased with increased melt holding time before pouring. Nodularity and nodule count decreased and the volume fraction of pearlite rather slightly increased with it.
