The greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) and the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) are serious insect pests that have a wide host range including cucumber, tomato, and pepper. In this study, we tested larvicidal efficacy of several on-the-market environment-friendly agricultural materials (EFAM) to select the effective products after the target pests were stabilized in indoor rearing condition. The developmental periods of two whiteflies are as follows: in the case of T. vaporariorum, egg duration is 9.6 days and nymph is 18.9 days, and in the case of B. tabaci, egg duration is 7.4 days and nymph is 15.2 days under $25^{\circ}C$ with relative humidity (RH) of $60{\pm}5%$ and a photoperiod of 16 L:8D. The total period of T. vaporariorum was 5 days longer than B. tabaci. Among 22 EFAMs six products showed more than 60% of insecticide efficacy against T. vaporariorum BTV B, BTV D, BTV G, BTV L, BTV M, and BTV S. On the other hand, seven EFAM products showed over 60% of insecticide efficacy against B. tabaci BTV D, BTV G, BTV K, BTV L, BTV M, BTV N, and BTV U. In the case of Spodptera litura previously, 16 EFAMs were tested against $2^{nd}$ instar S. litura, and six EFAMs were found to have more than 90% efficacy. Test of these six EFAMs against entire larval stages were performed in this study. Although some of these products showed still more than 90% of insecticidal efficacy against up to $3^{rd}$ instar larvae, the efficacy of these EFAMs sharply decreased as ages increase, resulting in less than 60% of efficacy of the products at most. This result indicates the difficulty to control S. litura with the on-the-market EFAMs alone under economic injury level. Collectively, it is required to find more EFAMs, and find alternative method, and combined way of controlling to control those insect pests tested in this study.
We investigated moth communities in Samcheok, Korea, to elucidate the influence of the East Coast Fire in 2000. Moths were collected with UV light traps 4 times a year from 2006 to 2009 at 3 sites: Unburned area (Site 1), Surface fire area (Site 2), and Crown fire area (Site 3) sites, respectively. A total of 3,804 individuals belonging to 727 species from 30 families were captured at the 3 study 1,727 individuals of 505 species (27 families) at Site 1, 1,193 individuals of 353 species (24 families) at Site 2, and 885 individuals of 340 species (25 families) at Site 3. Species richness and individuals of Noctuidae, Pyralidae, Geometridae, and Tortricidae were the highest at all 3 sites. All of species richness, individuals, and species diversity (H') were the highest in Site 1 for 4 years. The index of similarity (${\alpha}$-Index) was higher between Site 2 and 3 in 2006, while higher between Site 1 and 2 in 2009. Moths were grouped into 16 categories by hosts of the larval stage. Individuals of moths of herbaceous feeding habit continuously decreased at Site 3, but proportion of individuals of tree feeding habits continuously increased. The present results showed that moth communities was relatively recovered according to vegetation change after forest fire and regeneration of moth communities in surface fire area was more faster than in crown fire area.

Insect pests and their natural enemies of Hibiscus Linne (Malvaceae) were investigated from March 2002 to November 2004. Fourteen insect pest species of 9 families in 5 orders were collected from Hibiscus syriacus: 5 species in Homoptera, 3 species in Lepidoptera, 2 species in Coleoptera, 1 species in Orthoprera, 1species in Hemiptera, 1 spedies in Acarina, and 1 species in Stylommatophora. Especially, Aphis gossypii Glover (Aphididae), Anomis megogona Walker(Noctuidae) and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) were very important species because of their increasing daminge. The highest donsities were observed from May to June in August in Tetranychus urticae. As the enemies and ento-mopathogens of insect pests on Hibiscus syriacus, 1 species of bacteria, 3 species of fungi, 1 species of fungi, 1 species of Hemiptera, 1 species of Coleoptera, 2 species of Hymenopetera, 2 species of Diptera, and 1 species of Acarina were investigated. As the predators and parasitoids of Aphis gossypii, Aphidoletes aphidoletes aphidimyza Rondani (Cecidomyiidae), Meliscaeva cinctella Zetterstedt (Syrphidae), Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coccinellidae), and Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead (Braconidae), entomopathogenic fungi, Vericillium lecani naturalis strain (Moniliaceae) and Beauveria bassiana naturalis strain strain (Hypocreaceae) were observed and Bacillus thuringiensis naturalis strain (Bacillaceae), B. bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae naturalis strain (Hypocreaceae), predators of Tetranychus urticae, Amblyseius sp. (Phytoseiidae), and Orius sp. (Anthocoridae) were observed.
Tolerance mechanism to flupyrazofos was examined with Plutella xylostella (L.) and Spodoptera exigua by investigating the penetration rate of flupyrazofos into larvae body. On determining effective washing of $^{14}C$-flupyrazofos, the washing volume to recover over 98% of $^{14}C$-flupyrazofos was observed at three times (each time: 1 mL). To select a suitable solvent, the recovery rates of each solvent in 3rd instar larvae of DBM were above 98%, but the washing rates of acetone, hexane and ethyl-acetate were 85.1%, 67.2% and 68.4%, respectively. In the BAW larvae, although the recovery rates of each solvent were above 99%, the washing rates of acetone, hexane and ethyl-acetate were 83.5%, 65.9% and 71.7%, respectively. The $PT_{50}$ values of $^{14}C$-flupyrazofos were 0.731 h (44 min) in the DBM larva and 0.504 h (30 min) in the BAW larva. Radiocarbon in acetone washing (external fraction) decreased more quickly in the BAW larva than in the DBM larva, and amount of radiocarbon in larvae body increased more quickly with time in the DBM larva than in the BAW larva. In contrast, amount of radiocarbon in excreta increased more rapidly with time in the BAW larva than in the DBM larva.

Moths were collected to survey turfgrass pest and to compare species diversity from Jinju Country Club in Jinju, Gyeongsangnamdo, Korea, every 10 days using 200W mercury light trap from middle May to late October in 2008. As the results, only 23 individuals of Pseudaletia separata, Spodoptera depravata, Spodoptera litura, Agrotis segetum, and Agrotis ipsilon were collected as turf grass insect pests. However, 2028 individuals of 388 species in 22 families were collected in total. Dominant species was Culcula panterinaria, Fentonia ocypete, Hypsopygia regina, Culcula panterinaria, Flavocrambus striatellus, and Diarsia camescens in May, June, July, August, September and October, respectively. Species diversity was not different between two surveyed sites, but different among surveyed time. Species richness was more higher in hole 11 (Hole was surrounded by natural forest and located near pond) than hole 15 (Hole was located at the top part of mountain). Dominance index of moth was increased from October compared with diverse index and richness index were decreased from October. A large number of species and individuals were recorded in Noctuidae (502 individuals in 131 species), Geometridae (491 individuals in 84 species), Pyralidae (386 individuals in 73 species), and Notodontidae (277 individuals in 25 species). These four families were 80.9% out of all the collected species.
Development and reproduction of the rice armyworm, Pseudaletia separata Walker, were investigated under different temperatures (13, 15, 18, 20, 25, 30, and 33$^{\circ}C$ ). It took 80.6 days to grow from egg to pre-adult at 15$^{\circ}C$, and 27.3 days at 30$^{\circ}C$ (3.0 times shorter growth period compared with that at 30$^{\circ}C$ ). The range of developmental temperature of rice armywom was 15-30$^{\circ}C$. Survival rate from hatched larva to pre-adult was the highest as 70.6% at 25$^{\circ}C$. Pre-oviposition period and the adult longevity were 4.2 and 12.3 days at 15$^{\circ}C$, and 2.9 and 8.0 days at 30$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The highest average fecundity per female was 816.6 at 25$^{\circ}C$. The net reproductive rate (R$\_$o/) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r$\_$m/) were the highest at 25$^{\circ}C$ as 913.0 and 0.175, respectively. As a result, it was considered that optimum of temperature for P. separata growth was = 25.0$^{\circ}C$.
Morphological characteristics, developmental period, and seasonal occurrence of Adeia leucomelas (L.) were investigated from 1999 to 2000. In addition, consumption of sweetpotato as food was also examined. Adults of A. leucomelas were dark-brown and body lengths of females and males were 20.2 mm and 18.9 mm, respectively, Wing expanse of female and male was 33.7 mm and 29.4mm, respectively. Egg was flat round-shape. Larva was light yellow-green to dark-brown with 3.3-53.5 mm. Pupa was deep-brown and 15.1 mm in length. Developmental periods of A. leucomelas from egg to adult emergence at different temperatures of 15, 20, 25, and 30$^{\circ}$C were 108.5, 70.7, 40.2, and 29.1 days, respectively, Developmental threshold (DT) and effective accumulative temperatures were estimated as 10.7$^{\circ}$C and 67.5 DD in egg stage, 11.0$^{\circ}$C and 275.1 DD in larval stage and 9.3$^{\circ}$C and 244.6 DD in pupal stage, respectively. The longevity of adult female was shortened with increment of temperature, whereas the total numbers of eggs laid by a female were increased. The larvae of A.leucomelas occurred from mid-June to early October, and population reached its peak during early to mid-September in Jeonbuk province. Food consumption of A. leucomelas was highest at 20-25$^{\circ}$C. Food consumption of 1 st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th larvae of A. leucomelas per day at 25$^{\circ}$C was 0.4, 3.6, 19.6, 40.7, and 78.9 $\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively.

Economic injury level and control thresholds for the management of beet army worm, Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were evaluated on chinese cabbage of two different planting time. Two inoculation times were tested for each planting and the number of inoculated larva was 10, 20, 40, 80, respectively. Damages of leaves by first inoculation were 63.2% after eight days planting on 80 larva inoculation plot. By the second inoculation, those were below 50% after 20 days planting on the end of September. The linear relationships between population density and yield reduction were as following; Y = -10.62x + 867.9 ($R^2\;=\;0.643$) for 5 days and Y=-6.432x + 1074 ($R^2\;=\;0.720$) for 20 days. Based on these results the economic injury level was 5.4 larva for five days and 9.0 larva for 20 days per 20 chinese cabbage. The control thresholds calculated by 80% level of economic injury level were 4.3 and 7.2 larva, respectively.
Moths were collected using a 22W UV black light trap in June through September in 2005 and May, June, August and September in 2006. The study sites were Namsan (Mt. Nam), Jirisan (Mt. Jiri), Woraksan (Mt. Worak) which are part of the Korean National Long Term Ecological Research (KNLTER). There were two common forest communities, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora. The purpose of this study was to compare species diversity of the major plant feeding Lepidoptera in the two forest types at the regional KNLTER sites. We collected a total of 435 species from the KLTER sites in 2005 and 2006. Abundance of moths was highest at Woraksan (Mt. Worak) followed by Jirisan (Mt. Jiri). The Namsan (Mt. Nam) site had the lowest, with five families (Arctiidae, Geometridae, Noctuidae, Notodontidae, and Pyralidae). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed statistically significant differences at sampling date in species abundance as a response variable and at site in species richness as another response variable. Although we expected a distinct cluster with the forest type at each study site, one of ordination analyses, nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS), showed distinct clusters with the moth assemblages at each site only but NMS did not show any distinct cluster with the different forest types at each site as we expected.
For the development of friendly environmental control of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua that is too hard to control in the field, 25 insecticides were chosen from 58 registered to the beet armyworm, and bioassayed. There are 12 insecticides with neurotoxical activities, 10 with insect growth regulators and 3 Bacillus thuringiensis products. Among 12 insecticides with neurotoxical activities, mortality of S. exigua was 100% with emamectin benzoate (EC) and indoxacarb (WP) within 3 and 5 days after application, respectively. Otherwise, WG and SC of indoxacarb, Indoxacarb + etofenprox (WP) and pyridalyl (EW) were showed up to 91 %. Methoxyfenozide + spinosad (SC) was better than any other insect growth regulator as 100% mortality within 3 days after application. And methoxyfenozide (WP), tebufenozide (WP) and methoxyfenozide (SC) were 92% by 5 days. However, 3 kinds of B. thuringiensis products were showed under 35% mortality within 5 days from first spray.
