  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of meteorological elements on the changes of inorganic nutrient contents in leaves of 'ruyu' and 'Nishimurawase' sweet persimmon during the growing season. The contents of N, P, K and Cu decreased in leaves of 'Fuyu' and 'Nishimurawase' sweet persimmon during vegetative growth, while Ca, Mg and Mn increased. The K content was higher in leaves of 'Fuyu' than in 'Nishimurawase' sweet persimmon. The P and Ca content was higher in 'Nishimurawase' leaves than in 'Fuyu' sweet persimmon. Mean temperature was positively correlated with content of P in leaves. Rainfall was positively correlated with the content of Ca in leaves, whereas it was negatively correlated with content of N and Cu in leaves. The duration of sunshine was positively correlated with N and Cu in leaves but negatively correlated with that of Ca, Mg, and Mn content.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of treatments and adequate concentration of ethephon on coloring promotion of peel of sweet persimmon 'Nishimurawase' cultivar. High concentration(30 and 40㎎/l) of ethephon treatments increased the coloring of peel. but they were unfavorable to marketability due to the decrease of firmness, the increase of softening ratio, and the short of marketing critical period of fruits. Low concentration(20㎎/l) of ethephon treatment maintained higher marketability in terms of coloring of peel, firmness, softening ratio, and marketing critical period of fruit.

  • The antioxidant activities of two persimmon (Diospyros kaki T.) branches were evaluated. After preparing acetone, 70% acetone, and methanol extracts from Fuyu and Nishimurawase persimmon branches, DPPH radical scavenging activity (RSA), ABTS RSA, reducing power (RP), and total phenol contents (TPC) were determined. The acetone extracts of Fuyu and Nishimurawase showed higher antioxidant properties than the other extracts. The highest TPC (22.48 mg/g), DPPH RSA ($IC_{50}=701.48\;{\mu}g/mL$), ABTS RSA ($IC_{50}=493.76\;{\mu}g/mL$), and RP ($IC_{50}=1218.57\;{\mu}g/mL$) were found in acetone extract of Fuyu, while the lowest antioxidant activities were in 70% acetone extract of Nishimurawase. The results suggest that sweet persimmon branches exhibit considerable antioxidant activity.

  • Freezing hardiness of winter bud and branch according to dormancy level and low temperature, in persimmon (Diospyros kaki) cultivars, was investigated by electrolyte leaching rate, triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) test, and sprouting. Electrolyte leaching rate was lowest in branch of 20th January and was highest in the 20th March. The electrolyte leaching rate of 'Fuyu' and 'Cheongdobansi' was high in the 20th January and was low in the 20th February, but 'Uenishiwase' and 'Nishimurawase' was opposed to that. 'Hachiva' was the middle level in the cultivars. Absence rate by TTC test was highest in the 20th January and was low in the others. The 20th March had a great decrease in $-10^{\circ}C$ treatment. The absence rate of 'Fuyu' and 'Uenishiwase' was low in the 20th January and March and was high in the 20th February. 'Nishimurawase' and 'Hachiya' had a high level irrespective of dormancy level. Sprouting was highest in the 20th February and was lowest in 20th March. Most cultivars were not sprout in $-20^{\circ}C$ treatment and 'Fuyu', 'Nishimurawase' and 'Cheongdobansi' was a little high level irrespective of dormancy level. 'Hachiya' was only high in the 20th January. Thus, freezing hardiness of persimmon was very weak low temperature after dormancy breaking and was not different between astringent and non-astringent persimmon.

  • To establish the cultural practices of persimmon in heated plastic house, the growth and flower bud differentiation of 4-year old 'Nishimurawase' persimmon tree planted in 80 L pots were investigated. Temperature was kept at above $18^{\circ}C$. The earlier heating induced the earlier flower bud differentiation, while the number of days from bud burst to flower bud differentiation was 70-75 days, which was not affected by the date of heating. The date of flower bud differentiation in 'Nishimurawase' persimmon was May 1, May 21, and June 1 in the plastic house heated from Jan. 15, Feb. 15, and Mar. 15, respectively. The number of flower primordia per bud in the plastic house was 6.2-7.1, slightly fewer than that of 7.8 in the open-field, with the tendency of increasing the number by earlier heating. The days required for the differentiation of the last flower bud primordia from the beginning of differentiation of the first bud were 40-60, and that required for the flower bud differentiation of all buds on the same shoot was 30. The total carbohydrates in shoot increased and the contents of nitrogen decreased, resulting in increased C/N ratio just before flower bud differentiation, and it coincided with the time when the total carbohydates increased above 15%. During two weeks before flower bud differentiaton, The contents of zeatin per 1 g dry matter of shoot drastically increased from $27.2{\mu}g$ to $47.3{\mu}g$, while that of IAA slightly decreased from $188.6{\mu}g$ to $172.4{\mu}g$, and that of GA decreased from $2,225{\mu}g$ to $1,555{\mu}g$.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate several physiological activities of 4 sweet persimmon cultivar leaf water extracts. One new cultivar ('Hongchu' (HC)]) and three traditional cultivars ('Sangseojosaeng' (UW), Japanese Uenishiwase; 'Seochonjosaeng' (NW), Japanese Nishimurawase; and 'Buyu' (FY), Japanese Fuyu) were used in this study. The HC extract showed significantly higher DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, tyrosinase inhibitory activity, and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase activity than the other extracts, while the FY extract exhibited a relatively higher alcohol dehydrogenase activity. The HC extract contained higher amount of phenolics and ascorbic acid. These results suggest the possibility of high-quality persimmon leaf tea development using the new sweet persimmon cultivar, HC.

  • This study was carried out to know the optimum dose of gamma-ray for the induction of mutation in vitro and the characteristics of the mutants induced by gamma-ray in persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.). The LD50 (50% lethal dose) for in vitro shoots of the cultivar, Nishimurawase was between 1 krad and 2 krad and about 1 krad for the cultivar, Ichikikeijiro. As the dose of gamma-ray increased, the length of shoots decreased and necrosis of buds increased. For the cultivar, Nishmurawase, 37.5∼58.3% shoots rooted and the rooting rate and the number of roots per shoot was low in high gamma-ray. The irradiated young plants which were grown in the growth cabinet for 6 weeks were shorter in shoot length and had more branches than non-irradiated plants. The survival rate of irradiated plants grown in the green house for 3 months was 33%, while 77% for control plants.

  • The growth of terminal shoots of persimmon (Diospyros kaki) was analyzed during the first two months from the time of bud sprout to understand the dynamics of their early growth. Field-grown, mature 'Fuyu' and 'Nishimurawase' trees were used in a three-year study at two locations in Gyeongnam province. The growth of terminal shoots was most active from late April, about 10 days after foliation, to early May, followed by a gradual decline by late May. The increase in leaf area continued unabated throughout May. The weight of a flower bud increased slowly until early May and rapidly after flowering. Although its extension growth had been ceased by late May, dry weight (DW) of a terminal shoot continued to increase almost linearly throughout May due to shoot thickening and continued growth of leaves and fruits. In late May, the leaves and the stem accounted for more than 60% and less than 20% of total DW of a shoot respectively; fruit proportion increased to 7 to 17% by then. Relative growth rate (RGR) of the terminal shoot was higher than 213 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ in late April, but declined to less than 63 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ in late May. Like the pattern of seasonal changes in RGR, net assimilation rate (NAR) of the shoots decreased from 1.9 to 2 $mg{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$ to 0.5 to 0.8 $mg{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. An early-season 'Nishimurawase' did not differ from a late-season 'Fuyu' in RGR and NAR during the first two months of growth. The early growth of the shoots was affected mainly by the reserves redistributed from permanent organs, however, environmental conditions at the time was also involved.
