Spherical nickel ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized using the thermal decomposition method and coated with cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) after the synthesis. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the average diameter of the particles was 9.40 nm. The status of the CTAB-coating on the surface of the particles was checked using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Their hysteresis curve showed that the particles exhibited a superparamagnetic behavior. The $T_1$ and the $T_2$ relaxations of the nuclear spins were observed in aqueous solutions of the particles with different particles concentrations by using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, which showed that the $T_1$ and the $T_2$ relaxivities of the particles in water were $0.57mM^{-1}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and $10.42mM^{-1}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively. In addition, using an induction heating system, we evaluated their potentials for magnetic hyperthermia applications. The aqueous solution of the particles with a moderate concentration (smaller than 6.5 mg/mL) showed a saturation temperature larger than the hyperthermia target temperature of $42^{\circ}C$. These findings show that the CTAB-coated nickel ferrite particles are suitable for applications as $T_2$ contrast agents in MRI and heat generators in magnetic hyperthermia.
Young's modulus of electroplated nickel thin film is systematically investigated using the resonance method of atomic force microscope. Thin layers of nickel to be measured are electroplated onto the surface of an AFM silicon cantilever and Young's modulus of plated nickel film is investigated as a function of process conditions such as the plating temperature and applied current density. It is found that Young's modulus of plated nickel thin film is as high as that of bulk nickel at low plating temperature or low current density, but decreases with increasing plating temperature or current density. The results imply that the plating rate increases as increasing the plating temperature or current density, therefore, slow plating rate produces a dense plating material due to the sufficient time fur nickel ions to form a dense coating.
The Ni-SiC composite plating was performed in a Watt nickel solution and the wear resistance of the composite layer was studied on a pin-on-flat type wear tester. The volume losses and friction coefficients were measured. It was found that the quantity of SiC powder in the composite layers was affected by SiC concentration, pH, temperature, and agitation speed in the Watt nickel solution. The hardness and wear resistance of the coatings increased with SiC content. The quantity of SiC powder in the coating from a nickel sulfamate solution is larger than that of the Watt nickel solution, because the amount of nickel ions absorbed on the SiC powder in the nickel sulfamate solution is greater than that in the Watt's solution.
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a two dimensional material which has high band-gap, flatness and inert properties. This properties are used various applications such as dielectric for electronic device, protective coating and ultra violet emitter so on. 1) In this report, we were growing h-BN sheet directly on sapphire 2"wafer. Ammonia borane (H3BNH3) and nickel were deposited on sapphire wafer by evaporate method. We used nickel film as a sub catalyst to make h-BN sheet growth. 2) During annealing process, ammonia borane moved to sapphire surface through the nickel grain boundary. 3) Synthesized h-BN sheet was confirmed by raman spectroscopy (FWHM: ~30cm-1) and layered structure was defined by cross TEM (~10 layer). Also we controlled number of layer by using of different nickel and ammonia borane thickness. This nickel film supported h-BN growth method may propose fully and directly growing on sapphire. And using deposited ammonia borane and nickel films is scalable and controllable the thickness for h-BN layer number controlling.
Materials used as fuel cell electrode should be light, high conductive, high surface area for reaction, catalytic surface and uniformity of porous structure. Nickel is widely used in electrode materials because it itself has catalytic properties. When used as electrode materials, nickel of only a few im on the surface may be sufficient to conduct the catalytic role. To manufacture the nickel with porous structure, Electroless nickel plating on carbon fiber be conducted. Because electroless nickel plating is possible to do uniform coating on the surface of substrate with complex shape. Acidic bath and alkaline bathe were used in electroless nickel plating bath, and pH and temperature of bath were controlled. The rate of electroless plating in alkaline bath was faster than that in acidic bath. As increasing pH and temperature, the rate of electrolee plating was increased. The content of phosphorous in nickel deposit was higher in acidic bath than that in alkaline bath. As a result, the uniform nickel deposit on porous carbon fiber was conducted.
Generally, deposition mechanism of diamond particle is mainly embedding effect in the kinetic spray process. Accordingly, in spite of high cost, helium gas was employed as process gas to get high diamond fraction in the composite coating. In this study, the deposition behavior of bronze/diamond by kinetic spray process was compared using different process gas (helium and nitrogen). Bare (mean size of $5{\mu}m$, $20{\mu}m$) and nickel coated diamond (mean size of $26{\mu}m$) were deposited on Al 6061-T6 substrate with fixed process temperature and pressure. For comparison with experimental results, plastic deformation behavior of nickel layer was simulated by finite element analysis (using ABAQUS/Explicit 6.7-2). The size, broken ratio, and fraction of diamond in the composite coating were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and image analysis method. The uniform distribution and deposition efficiency of diamond particles in the coating layer could be achieved by tailoring the physical properties of the feedstock.
Nickel oxide thin films were deposited by the DC magnetron reactive sputtering process under the conditions such as various oxygen flow rates(0, 3, 6, 8, 10 sccm) with constant 33 sccm argon flow rate for the sputtering time of 40 second with the power of 0.3 kW. Sheet resistances were measured by the four point probes. In order to observe discharge voltage characteristics according to the oxygen flow rates, the sputtering processes were performed under the powers of 0.2kW and 0.3kW. The feasibility of the coating system for high quality ferromagnetic thin films was tested through the electromagnetic simulation and the thin film thickness measurement from the experiment. It was shown that a discharge voltage was decreased under the low power and low oxygen flow rate, since the oxygen was quickly saturated on nickel target surface. The sheet resistance was increased as oxygen flow rate increased. The film thickness deposited by the coating system for ferromagnetic target was improved approximately 10% in comparison with previous coating systems.
A nickel foam, one of metal foams was seleced as a catalyst support instead of conventional ceramic materials. $Al_2O_3$ was coated on the surface of nickel foam to increase the surface area. $Al_2O_3$ coating process was based on sol-gel process. SEM image was obtained and $Al_2O_3$ coverage was confirmed. Combustion experiments were carried out using SUS combustor and $H_2$/air mixture. Temperatures were measured with different equivalence ratios and $H_2$ flow rates. $H_2$ conversion rates were calculated by the analysis of product gas using gas chromatography. Catalytic combustion of $H_2$ was complete and stable with Pt/$Al_2O_3$ coated nickel foam and influences of water vapor were confirmed during the beginning of combustion.
