Background: Mitigation of primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) is a significant issue in the nuclear industry. Advanced nickel-based alloys with lower susceptibility have been adopted, although they do not seem to be entirely immune from PWSCC during normal operation. With regard to structural integrity assessments of the relevant components, an accurate evaluation of crack growth rate (CGR) is important. Methods: For the present study, the extended finite element method was adopted from among diverse meshless methods because of its advantages in arbitrary crack analysis. A user-subroutine based on the strain rate damage model was developed and incorporated into the crack growth evaluation. Results: The proposed method was verified by using the well-known Alloy 600 material with a reference CGR curve. The analyzed CGR curve of the alternative Alloy 690 material was then newly estimated by applying the proven method over a practical range of stress intensity factors. Conclusion: Reliable CGR curves were obtained without complex environmental facilities or a high degree of experimental effort. The proposed method may be used to assess the PWSCC resistance of nuclear components subjected to high residual stresses such as those resulting from dissimilar metal welding parts.
Nitinol is an alloy of nickel and titanium. Nitinol is one of the shape memory alloys(SMA) that are restored to a remembered form, changing the crystal structure at a given temperature. Because of these unique features, it is used in medical devices, high precision sensors, and aerospace industries. However, the conventional method of mechanical machining for nitinol has problems of thermal and residual stress after processing. Therefore, the electrochemical machining(ECM), which does not produce residual stress and thermal deformation, has emerged as an alternative processing technique. In addition, to replace the existing experimental planning methods, this study used deep neural network(DNN), which is the basis for AI. This method was shown to be more useful than conventional method of design of experiments(RSM, Taguchi, Regression) by applying deep neural network(DNN) to electrochemical machining(ECM) and comparing root mean square errors(RMSE). Comparison with actual experimental values has shown that DNN is a more useful method than conventional method. (DOE - RSM, Taguchi, Regression). The result of the machining was accurately and efficiently predicted by applying electrochemical machining(ECM) and deep neural network(DNN) to the shape memory alloy(SMA), which is a hard-mechinability material.

The electrically assisted brazing of a ferritic stainless steel with nickel-based filler metal is experimentally investigated. During electrically assisted brazing of a lap joint, the temperature of the joint is first rapidly increased to a brazing temperature and held nearly constant for a specific period using a pulsed electric current. Microstructural analysis results strongly suggest that the electric current during electrically assisted brazing enhances diffusion between the filler metal and the ferritic stainless steel, thus inducing significantly thicker diffusion zones compared with induction brazing. The mechanical test results show that the strength of the electrically assisted brazing joint is comparable to or even superior to those of the joint fabricated by induction brazing, while the process time of the electrically assisted brazing is significantly shorter than that of induction brazing.
In this paper, the effect of Ni (0, 0.5 and 1.0 wt%) additions on the microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of cast and extruded Al-MM-Sb alloy is studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy, and a universal tensile testing machine. Molten aluminum alloy is maintained at 750 ℃ and then poured into a mold at 200 ℃. Aluminum alloys are hot-extruded into a rod that is 12 mm in diameter with a reduction ratio of 39:1 at 550 ℃. The addition of Ni results in the formation of Al11RE3, AlSb and Al3Ni intermetallic compounds; the area fraction of these intermetallic compounds increases with increasing Ni contents. As the amount of Ni increases, the average grain sizes of the extruded Al alloy decrease to 1359, 536, and 153 ㎛, and the high-angle grain boundary fractions increase to 8, 20, and 34 %. As the Ni content increases from 0 to 1.0 wt%, the electrical conductivity is not significantly different, with values from 57.4 to 57.1 % IACS.

For sustainable development in the construction industry, blast furnace slag has been used as a substitute for cement in concrete. In contrast, ferronickel slag, which is the by-product generated during smelting to ferronickel used in the manufacturing of stainless steel and nickel alloys, has a limitation to use as a binder and an aggregate due to its expansive characteristics. Recently, stabilization technology of ferronickel slag has been improved and studies have been carried out to utilize ferronicke slag as fine aggregate in concrete. Therefore, in this study, basic mechanical properties of concrete used in ferronickel slag aggregate was evaluated. The compressive strength (24, 30, 40 MPa) and replacement rate of ferronickel slag aggregate (0, 10, 25, 50%) were considered as experimental variables. As a result of test, concrete replaced fine aggregate with 25% ferronickel slag aggregate showed superior performance in the compressive strength and flexural strength.

The unique thermomechanical properties of shape memory alloys (SMAs) make it a versatile material for strengthening and repairing structures. In particular, several research studies have already demonstrated the effectiveness of using the heat activated shape memory effect of nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) based SMAs to actively confine concrete members. Despite the proven effectiveness and wide commercial availability of Ni-Ti SMAs, however, their high cost remains a major obstacle for applications in real structural engineering projects. In this study, the shape memory effect of a new, much more economical iron-based SMA (Fe-SMA) is characterized and the compressive behavior of concrete confined with Fe-SMA strips is investigated. Tests showed the Fe-SMA strips used in this study are capable of developing high levels of recovery stress and can be easily formed into hoops to provide effective active and passive confining pressure to concrete members. Compared to concrete cylinders confined with conventional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites, Fe-SMA confinement yielded significantly higher compressive deformation capacity and residual strength. Overall, the compressive behavior of Fe-SMA confined concrete was comparable to that of Ni-Ti SMA confined concrete. This study clearly shows the potential for Fe-SMA as a robust and cost-effective strengthening solution for concrete structures and opens possibilities for more practical applications.
The Purpose of this study was fourfold - to evaluate the general laws of friction applied to orthodontic conditions, to compare archwire materials under these controlled conditions, to compare ligation method, and to measure the effect of the artificial saliva on friction with these materials Three wire alloys (Cobalt-chromium, Nickel-titanium, Beta-titanium) in two size wires (.016" , .016" ${\times}$.022" ) were examined respect to the bracket (.018" ${\times}$.025" standard), and two ligature material (stainless steel, elastomeric) in dry and wet conditions The results were as follows, 1. The order of frictional force against alloy materials was Co-Cr (lowest), Ni-Ti, and ${\beta}$-Ti(highest) - with the exception of elastomeric ligation under wet conditions. 2. S.S. ligation gave rise to significantly greater friction than elastomeric ligation did. 3. Testing in the presence of saliva, rather than in dry conditions, decreased the frictional force for S.S. ligation with .016" Co-Cr, Ni-Ti, ${\beta}$-Ti. but, increased the frictional force for S.S. ligation with .016" ${\times}$ .022" Co-Cr, Ni-Ti, ${\beta}$-Ti. 4. .016" ${\times}$.022 " wire generated more friction than .016" wire.
In this study, metal properties were compared by preparingthree iron knives from steel ingots produced via traditional iron-making, and ingot which jointed the steel of modern times. Metal microscope and SEM-EDS analysis revealed fine ferrite and pearlite structures of the hypo-eutectoid steel of Fe-C alloys. All samples also exhibited martensite on the blade of the knife. By Vicker's hardness analysis, the hardness of the sand iron knife (K1) was 533.38 HV, sand iron-nickel steel knife (K3) was 514.8 HV, and sand iron-carbon steel knife (K2) was 477.02 HV. The mass reduction due to wear was 0.058% for K1, 0.059% for K3, and 0.144% for K2. EPMA(Electron probe micro-analyzer) analysis of the surface pattern of the specimens confirmed that the patterns were exposed due to differences in the content of C or the chemical composition. Additional research on heat treatment processes is needed to increase the abrasion resistance of blades. Traditional steel ingots could produce high-quality steel if combined with nickel steel.

The effects of surface treatment on the hydrogen storage properties of a $Mg_2Ni$ alloy particle were investigated by the microvoltammetric technique, in which a carbon-filament microelectrode was manipulated to make electrical contact with the particle in a KOH aqueous solution. It was found that the hydrogen storage properties of $Mg_2Ni$ at room temperature were improved by the surface treatment with a nickel plating solution. The sodium salts(sodium phosphate and sodium dihydrogen citrate) contained in the nickel plating solution made the alloy form an amorphous-like state, resulting in an improved hydrogen charge/discharge capacity at room temperature as high as about 150[mAh/g] from the original value of 17[mAh/g]. Potential-step experiment was carried out to determine the apparent chemical diffusion coefficient of hydrogen atom($D_{app}$) in the alloy. Since the alloy particle we used here was a dense, conductive sphere, the spherical diffusion model was employed for data analysis. $D_{app}$ was found to vary the order between $10^{-8}{\sim}10^{-9}[cm^2/s]$ over the course of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation process.
A highly sensitive and selective non-enzymatic glucose sensor has gained great attention because of simple signal transformation, low-cost, easily handling, and confirming the blood glucose as the representative technology. Until now, glucose sensor has been developed by the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) on the surface of electrodes. However although GOx is quite stable compared with other enzymes, the enzyme-based biosensors are still impacted by various environment factors such as temperature, pH value, humidity, and toxic chemicals. Non-enzymatic sensor for direct detecting glucose is an attractive alternative device to overcome the above drawbacks of enzymatic sensor. Many efforts have been tried for the development of non-enzymatic sensors using various transition metals (Pt, Au, Cu, Ni, etc.), metal alloys (Pt-Pb, Pt-Au, Ni-Pd, etc.), metal oxides, carbon nanotubes and graphene. In this paper, we show that Ni-based nano-particles (NiNPs) exhibit remarkably catalyzing capability for glucose originating from the redox couple of $Ni(OH)_2/NiOOH$ on the surface of ITO electrode in alkaline medium. But, these non-enzymatic sensors are nonselective toward oxidizable species such as ascorbic acid the physiological fluid. So, the anionic polymer was coated on NiNPs electrode preventing the interferences. The oxidation of glucose was highly catalyzed by NiNPs. The catalytically anodic currents were linearly increased in proportion to the glucose concentration over the 0~6.15 mM range at 650 mV versus Ag/AgCl.
