Various heavy metals have been known for causing ischemic stroke. In order to describe the causative relationship between the blood levels of various heavy metals and stroke patients, 116 patients with stroke and 111 patients without stroke were selected from one Oriental medical hospital in Wonju, Korea. Total of 9 kinds of metals such as As, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were analyzed in blood from patients with and without stroke. There were no significant differences in the means of metal concentrations between the stroke and nonstroke patients except for the mean of Co concentration. In the case of Co, the means for stroke and non-stroke patients were 0.44 ug/l and 0.40 ug/l showing a significant difference at the level of p-value=0.05. The odds ratios for each metal ranged from 0.96 to 2.86. Most odds ratios were not significant but the odds ratio for Co, $2.86{\pm}1.49$ was significant, indicating that Co increases the risk of stroke by 2.86 times. In order to identify the specific risk level of stroke increased by a multiple interaction of metals, regression coefficients and odds ratio for a pair or multiple pair of metals were reanalyzed. However, all of regression coefficients and odds ratios were not significant. In conclusion, Co showed the significant level in blood from patients with stroke. In addition, the odds ratio of stroke was significantly different from other metals. Thus, it is considered that Co among various metals analyzed in this study is the important metal for increasing the risk of stroke.

This study was objected to evaluate the potential impact on the groundwater environment of the coal bottom ash used as fill materials on the land surface. From four coal-fired power plants, bottom-ashes were collected and analyzed through sequential extraction and column leaching tests following the meteoric water mobility procedure. The column tests shown leaching heavy metals including Pb, As, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, Ba, Sr, Sb, V, Cr, Mo, and Hg. The relatively high concentrations of B, Sr, Ba, and V in leachate were attributed to both the higher concentrations in the bottom ash and the relatively higher portion of leachable state, sorbed state, of metals. Bottom-ash samples from the D-plant only show high leaching potential of sulfate ($SO_4$), probably originated from the coal-combustion process, called the Fluidized Bed Combustion. Consequently, to manage recycling bottom ashes as fill materials, an evaluation system should be implemented to test the leaching potentials of metals from the ashes considering the absolute amount of metals and their state of existence in ashes, and the coal-combustion process.

A novel deoC gene was identified from Paenibacillus sp. EA001 isolated from soil. The gene had an open reading frame (ORF) of 663 base pairs encoding a protein of 220 amino acids with a molecular mass of 24.5 kDa. The amino acid sequence was 79% identical to that of deoxyribose 5-phosphate aldolase (DERA) from Geobacillus sp. Y412MC10. The deoC gene encoding DERA was cloned into an expression vector and the protein was expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant DERA was purified using Ni-NTA affinity chromatography and then characterized. The optimum temperature and pH of the enzyme were $50^{\circ}C$ and 6.0, respectively. The specific activity for the substrate deoxyribose 5-phosphate (DR5P) was $62\;{\mu}mol/min/mg$. The $K_m$ value for DR5P was determined to be 145 mM with the $k_{cat}$ value of $3.2{\times}10^2/s$ from Lineweaver-Burk plots. The EA001 DERA showed stability toward a high concentration of acetaldehyde (100 mM).

In this study, porous stainless steel (STS316L) sintered body was fabricated by powder metallurgy method and its properties such as porosity, compressive yield strength, hardness, and permeability were evaluated. 67.5Fe-17Cr- 13Ni-2.5Mo (wt%) powder was produced by a water atomization. The atomized powder was classified into size with under $45{\mu}m$ and over $180{\mu}m$, and then they were compacted with various pressures and sintered at $1210^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in a vacuum atmosphere. The porosities of sintered bodies could be obtained in range of 20~53% by controlling the compaction pressure. Compressive yield strength and hardness were achieved up to 268 MPa and 94 Shore D, respectively. Air permeability was obtained up to $79l/min{\cdot}cm^2$. As a result, mechanical properties and air permeability of the optimized porous body having a porosity of 25~40% were very superior to that of Al alloy.
The effects of W content and heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Hastelloy C-276 alloy investment castings were discussed. As the W content was increased, dendritic microstructure was refined and network type precipitate formed during solidification was distributed on the dendritic grain boundaries. Cr, Fe and Mn were highly segregated in the Ni-based dendrite matrix, and Mo, W, C and Si were in the precipitates. Due to the heat treatment, fine granular and flake precipitates were newly formed in the matrix, and unresolved network type precipitates remained on the grain boundary. The network type precipitates and the granular and flake precipitates formed by heat treatment were confirmed to be ${\mu}$ phase intermetallic compounds with similar compositions. Due to the increase of the W content and the heat treatment, hardness and tensile strength were significantly increased. However, tensile strength after aging treatment was decreased with the W content. These results can be explained in that brittle fracturing by the unresolved network type precipitates dispersed in the grain boundary was predominant over ductile fracturing by the dimple ruptures originating from the fine granular precipitates in the matrix.
Superconducting YBa$_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) thin films were grown on Hastelloy(Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) with CeO$_2$ buffer layer in-situ by pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. To apply superconducting property on power transmission line, we have deposited YBCO thin film on flexible metallic substrate. However, it is difficult to grow the YBCO films on flexible metallic substrates due to both interdiffusion problem between metallic substrate and superconducting overlayers and non-crystallization of YBCO on amorphous substrate. It is necessary to use a buffer layer to overcome the difficulties. We have chosen CeO$_2$ as a buffer layer which has cubic structure of 5.41 ${\AA}$ lattice parameter and only 0.2% of lattice mismatch with 3.82 ${\AA}$ of a-axis lattice parameter of YBCO on [110] direction of CeO$_2$ In order to enhance the crystallization of YBCO films on metallic substrates, we deposited CeO$_2$ buffer layers with varying temperature and 02 pressure. By XRD, it is observed that dominated film orientation is strongly depending on the deposition temperature of CeO$_2$ layer. The dominated orientation of CeO$_2$ buffer layer is changed from (200) to(111) by increasing the deposition temperature and this transition affects the crystallization of YBCO superconducting film on CeO$_2$ buffered Hastelloy.
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of alternating etoposide-cisplatin and vinorelbine-cisplatin (EP-NP) compared with an etoposide-cisplatin (EP) regimen for advanced combined small cell carcinomas. Materials and Methods: Histologically confirmed combined small cell carcinoma patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned (1:1) into either the EP-NP setting (group A) or the EP setting (group B). The primary endpoint was progression-free survival in patients who received at least one dose of treatment. Results: Eighty-two patients entered into this trial, 42 in group A and 40 in group B. The objective response rates in group A and group B were 42.9% and 32.5%, respectively (p=0.334). Survival analysis showed that median progression-free survival was 6.1 months in group A, which was significantly longer than the 4.1 months in group B (p=0.041). However, as to overall survival, no significant difference was found between the two groups (11.0 vs 10.1 months in groups A and B, respectively, p=0.545). No unexpected side effects were observed in either group. Conclusions: The EP-NP regimen for combined small cell carcinomas prolonged progressio-nfree survival compared with the EP regimen. Further clinical investigations are warranted.
Planarization of the free-standing diamond film surface as smooth as possible could be obtained by using the hydrogen plasma etching with the diffusion of the carbon species into the metal alloy (Fe, Cr, Ni). For this process, we placed the free-standing diamond film between the metal alloy and the Mo substrate like a metal-diamond-molybdenum (MDM) sandwich. We set the sandwich-type MDM in a microwave-plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) system. The sandwich-type MDM was heated over ca. 1000 $^{\circ}C$ by using the hydrogen plasma. We call this process as the hydrogen plasma etching with carbon diffusion process. After etching the free-standing diamond film surface, we investigated surface roughness, morphologies, and the incorporated impurities on the etched diamond film surface. Finally, we suggest that the hydrogen plasma etching with carbon diffusion process is an adequate etching technique for the fabrication of the diamond film surface applicable to electronic devices.
Twenty five samples of the scheelite-powellite series from twelve Korean tungsten deposits of various geologic settings were studied mineralogically and geochemically. Variations in the trace-element contents of the scheelite minerals are considered in relation to geologic settings and mineralogic properties. Scheelites from ore deposits developed in similar geologic settings and under similar physicochemical conditions are characterized by specific combinations of trace elements.

Receptor modeling is one of statistical methods to achieve reasonable air pollution strategies. In order to maintain and manage ambient air quality, it is necessary to identify sources and to apportion its sources for ambient particulate matters. The main purpose of the study was to survey seasonal trends of inorganic elements in the coarse and fine particles. Second, this study has attempted emission sources qualitatively by a receptor method, the PMF mo-del. After that. both PMF (positive matrix factorization) model and TTFA (target transformation factor analysis) model were applied to compare and to estimate mass contribution of coarse and fine particle sources at the receptor. A total of 138 sets of samples was collected from 1989 to 1996 by a low volume cascade impactor with 9 size fraction stages at Kyung Hee University in Korea. Sixteen chemical species (Si, Ca, Fe, K, Pb, Na, Zn, Mg, Ba, Ni, V, Mn, Cr, Br, Cu. Co) were characterized by XRF. The study result showed that the weighted arithmetic mean of coarse and fine particles were 51.3 and 54.4 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively. Contribution of both particle fractions were esti-mated using TTFA and PMF models. The number of estimated sources was seven according to TTFA model and 8 according to PMF model. Comparison of TTFA and PMF revealed that both methodologies exhibited similar trends in their contribution pattern. However, large differences between contributions were observed in some sour-ces. The results of this study may help to suggest control strategies in local countries where known source profiles do not exist.
