In this study, kinetics data was obtained for steam reforming reaction of ethane over the nickel catalyst. The variables of steam reforming reaction were reaction temperature, partial pressure of ethane, and mole ratio of steam and ethane. Parameters for the power rate law kinetic model and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model were obtained from the kinetic data. Also, sizing of steam reforming reactor was performed by using PRO/II simulator. For the steam reforming reaction of ethane, Langmuir-Hinshelwood model determining the reaction rate by the surface reaction was better suited than a simple power rate law kinetic model. On water-gas-shift reaction, power rate law kinetic model was well fitted to the kinetic data. Reactor size can be calculated for production of hydrogen through PRO/II simulation.
Co and Ni as catalysts in $SnO_2$ sensors to improve the sensitivity for $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas were coated by a solution reduction method. $SnO_2$ thick films were prepared by a screen-printing method onto $Al_2O_3$ substrates with an electrode. The sensing characteristics were investigated by measuring the electrical resistance of each sensor in a chamber. The structural properties of $SnO_2$ with a rutile structure investigated by XRD showed a (110) dominant $SnO_2$ peak. The particle size of the $SnO_2$:Ni powders with Ni at 6 wt% was about 0.1 ${\mu}m$. The $SnO_2$ particles were found to contain many pores according to a SEM analysis. The sensitivity of $SnO_2$-based sensors was measured for 5 ppm of $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air to that in the target gases. The results showed that the best sensitivity of $SnO_2$:Ni and $SnO_2$:Co sensors for $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature was observed in $SnO_2$:Ni sensors coated with 6 wt% Ni. The $SnO_2$:Ni gas sensors showed good selectivity to $CH_4$ gas. The response time and recovery time of the $SnO_2$:Ni gas sensors for the $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gases were 20 seconds and 9 seconds, respectively.
$CO_2$ methanation was performed over Ni supported on cation-exchanged Y zeolites under atmospheric pressure at $250{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ and $H_2/CO_2$ mole ratio of 4. Adsorption strength between carbon dioxide and nickel was found to be Influenced by the cation exchanged in the zeolite. TPD(Temperature-programmed desorption) results show that the adsorption strength decreases in the order of Ni/NaY>Ni/MaY>Ni/HY. TPSR(Temperature-programmed surface reaction) results indicate that enhanced methanation activity is obtained when the adsorption strength between carbon dioxide and nickel is stroing. As the reduction temperature increases, the methantion activity of the catalyst increase. From this result the larger size nickel particle seems advantageous for $CO_2$ methanation reaction. The maximum activity is obtained when nickel loading is 3.3wt%. Carbon monoxide is produced as a by-product throughout the reaction temperature range, and as the contact time increases, the selectivity to methane increases and the selectivity to carbon monoxide decreases steadily. Thus methane seems to be produced from $CO_2$ via CO as an intermediate species. In the temperature range of $410{\sim}450^{\circ}C$, the methane production rate is found to be dependent on the orders of 3.3~-0.5 and 1.4~3.6 with respect to $CO_2$ and $H_2$ partial pressures, respectively. This clearly shows that $CO_2$ and $H_2$ are competing for adsorption sites and as the reaction temperature increases, it becomes increasingly difficult for $H_2$ to be adsorbed on the catalyst surface.

In this research, we investigate electrical performance and electrochemical properties of graphene supported Pt (Pt/G) and PtM (M = Ni and Y) alloy catalysts (PtM/Gs) that are synthesized by modified polyol method. With the PtM/Gs that are adopted for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as cathode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), their catalytic activity and ORR performance and electrical performance are estimated and compared with one another. Their particle size, particle distribution and electrochemically active surface (EAS) area are measured by TEM and cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. On the other hand, regarding ORR activity and electrical performance of the catalysts, (i) linear sweeping voltammetry by rotating disk electrode and rotating ring-disk electrode and (ii) PEMFC single cell tests are used. The TEM and CV measurements demonstrate particle size and EAS of PtM/Gs are compatible with those of Pt/G. In case of PtNi/G, its half-wave potential, kinetic current density, transferred electron number per oxygen molecule and $H_2O_2$ production % are excellent. Based on data obtained by half-cell test, when PEMFC singlecell tests are carried out, current density measured at 0.6V and maximum power density of the PEMFC single cell employing PtNi/G are better than those employing Pt/G. Conclusively, PtNi/Gs synthesized by modified polyol shows better ORR catalytic activity and PEMFC performance than other catalysts.
The effect of rapid thermal annealing (RTA) treatment on the growth characteristics of CNTs was investigated. We observed that Ni catalyst film was agglomerated by RTA treatment, resulting in the formation of Ni nanoparticles. The well aligned CNTs were grown from the Ni nanoparticles by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). It is shown that the size and distribution of the nanoparticles depend mainly on the annealing temperature and initial thickness of the metal layer. Also, it was found that CNTs grown through optimal RTA treatment had the more improved field emission characteristics than those of as-grown CNTs.

The improved high-performance Fe-based perovskite-type oxides ($La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}M_xFe_{1-x}O_3$, M = Cu, Cr, Ni) were synthesized by a citrate method and characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD and NMR spectroscopy analyses. The characterization analyses revealed that the stoichiometric amounts of lattice oxygen were existed in all of perovskite samples except for a nickel-doped perovskite. Fe-based perovskites exhibited a surprising result for ortho-para $H_2$ spin conversion reaction, indicating two orders of magnitude higher conversions and conversion rates than commercial $Fe_2O_3$. It was considered that this conversion difference might be attributed to the presence of oxygen vacancies in Fe-based perovskites prepared in this study.
Carbon nanotubes [CNTs] are grown on TiN-coated Si substrates at $700^{\circ}C$ by inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). Pre-treatment of Ni catalysts has been performed using an RF magnetron sputtering system. Structural properties and field-emission characteristics of the CNTs grown are analyzed in terms of the RF power applied and the treatment time used in the pre-treatment process. The characterization using various techniques, such as FE-SEM, AFM, and Raman spectroscopy, show that the physical dimension as well as the crystal quality of CNTs are changed by pre-treatment of Ni catalysts. It is also seen that Ni catalysts with proper grain size and uniform surface roughness may produce much better electron emission. The physical reason for all the measured data obtained are discussed to establish the relationship between the structural property and the electron emission characteristic of CNTs.

This work was carried out to improve the performance of anodic electrocatalysts in direct ethanol fuel cell(DEFC). PtRu and $Pt_5Ru_4M$(M= Ni, Sn, Mo and W) electrocatalysts were prepared by using a $NaBH_4$ reduction method. Alloy crystal structure and particle size of electrocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The XRD analysis of the electrocatalysts revealed that the face-centered cubic(fcc) peaks shifted to slightly higher diffraction angles when third metals were added. Average size of the uniform particles was observed to be approximately $3{\sim}3.5\;nm$ from the TEM image. The electrochemical measurements were carried out in the solution 1M $H_2SO_4$ and 1M $C_2H_5OH$ at room temperature. Cyclic-voltammogram results showed that $Pt_5Ru_4W$ electrocatalyst exhibited much higher current density for ethanol oxidation of $2.73\;mA/cm^2$ than PtRu electrocatalyst of $0.73\;mA/cm^2$.
The effects of chromium addition on the catalytic activity of Raney nickel in alkaline fuel cell (AFC) have been studied. When the catalysts are prepared from various contents of chromium, the electrochemical characteristics shows the highest mass activity of 3.588 A/g. Operating temperature and electrolyte concentration of half cell were $80^{\circ}C$ and 6N KOH, respectively. With the addition of chromium, the particle size is diminished from 12.11 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 11.07 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the decrease of particle size contributes to the enlargement of the specific surface area from 0.653 $\m^2$/g to 0.685$\m^2$/g. The residual aluminium contents of Raney nickel surface are considerably influenced by the particle size and chromium acts as sintering inhibitor.
To improve the catalytic activity of platinum on polymer electrolyte fuel cell(PEFC), platinum was alloyed with cobalt and nickel at various temperature. By XRD, it was observed the crystal structure of alloy catalysts were the ordered face centered cubic(f.c.c) due to the superlattice line at $33^{\circ}$. As heat-treatment temperature was increased, the particle size of alloys also were increased and the crystalline lattice parameters were decreased. According to the results from mass activity, specific activity and Tafel slope measured by cell performance test and cyclic voltammogram, the catalyst activities of alloys are higher than that pure platinum.
