Objectives: The purpose of this study is to critically review the recent discourse on single-person households (SPH) that appeared in Korean newspapers. Specifically, we analyzed articles in five major daily newspapers, which are representative of the media in Korean society, and examined the types of titles, subjects, and contents of articles in which SPH were mentioned. Method: For this purpose, 538 articles on SPH or "living alone" that appeared in the five major Korean newspapers during 2011-2017 were analyzed using content analysis methods. Results: Our analysis revealed eight major topics(living arrangement and household characteristics; financial instruments; food, clothing, and housing culture; policy; welfare; relationships; safety; values and attitudes). The results show that there is a surge of articles portraying neutral images of SPH in Korean newspapers, thereby emphasizing the recent growth in the number of SPH and the information relating to this population group. Although negative images of SPH continue to exist in the discourse, in recent times we found these attitudes to have become less prevalent compared to neutral images or even positive discourse. We also found that the discourse on these topics and arguments can be divided into four themes-the diversity of SPHs, the solo economy for single households, safety issues, and social relationships. Conclusions: Theoretical and policy implications on family studies relating to SPH are discussed.

Aside from serving as a body that monitors and criticizes the government through reviews and comments on public issues, newspapers can also form and spread public opinion. Metadata contains certain picture records and, in the case of local newspapers, the former is an important means of obtaining locality. Furthermore, advertising in newspapers and the way of editing in newspapers can be viewed as a representation of the times. For the value of archiving in newspapers when a documentation strategy is established, the newspaper is considered as a top priority that should be collected. A newspaper archive that will handle preservation and management carries huge significance in many ways. Journalists use them to write articles while scholars can use a newspaper archive for academic purposes. Also, the NIE is a type of a practical usage of such an archive. In the digital age, the newspaper archive has an important position because it is located in the core of MAM, which integrates and manages the media asset. With this, there are prospects that an online archive will perform a new role in the production of newspapers and the management of publishing companies. Korea Integrated News Database System (KINDS), an integrated article database, began its service in 1991, whereas Naver operates an online newspaper archive called "News Library." Initially, KINDS received an enthusiastic response, but nowadays, the utilization ratio continues to decrease because of the omission of some major newspapers, such as Chosun Ilbo and JoongAng Ilbo, and the numerous user interface problems it poses. Despite these, however, the system still presents several advantages. For example, it is easy to access freely because there is a set budget for the public, and accessibility to local papers is simple. A national library consistently carries out the digitalization of time-honored newspapers. In addition, individual newspaper companies have also started the service, but it is not enough for such to be labeled an archive. In the United States (US), "Chronicling America"-led by the Library of Congress with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities-is in the process of digitalizing historic newspapers. The universities of each state and historical association provide funds to their public library for the digitalization of local papers. In the United Kingdom, the British Library is constructing an online newspaper archive called "The British Newspaper Archive," but unlike the one in the US, this service charges a usage fee. The Joint Information Systems Committee has also invested in "The British Newspaper Archive," and its construction is still ongoing. ProQuest Archiver and Gale NewsVault are the representative platforms because of their efficiency and how they have established the standardization of newspapers. Now, it is time to change the way we understand things, and a drastic investment is required to improve the domestic and international online newspaper archive.

Since acquiring intelligence about political situations around the Korea Peninsular in a direct manner is nearly impossible, it is inevitable for the individuals or companies to rely on open and indirect data such as newspapers. However, since the contents in the newspapers are substantially unstructured and very large, conventional content analysis is time-consuming and hence very costly. Hence, this paper aims to propose a sentimental analysis method which computes daily 'peace index' from unstructured data in the newspapers. From the content analysis, words and phrases which represent the sentiment of a nation are carefully identified. To show the feasibility of the idea proposed in this paper, a prototype system with vocabulary repository about political situations was developed for estimating peace index automatically.

The purpose of this study was to identify the im-. age of nursing, that is, to see how nursing is viewed in newspapers. Articles about nursing from two Korean daily newspapers from Jan. 1, 1987 to Dec.31, 1991 were examined for subject, type, attitude and author-ship. The inter-rater reliability was 0.89(by The Holsti method). The major findings were as follows : 1. The total number of articles were 110. 2. As for the subjests matter, articles related to professional nursing activities appeared most frequently(29.6%) , there about labor issues and activity to promote nurses's job climate 19.4%, and about official activities of nursing 11.2%. 3. Commentary articles appeared most frequently(41.2%) , Other article forms were straight news(27. 1％), contribution(17.6％) and inter-views (10.6%). 4. Feature stories acounted for 62.4% and news articles for 37.6%. Most of the articles were of national interests(96.5%), the rest(3.5%) of news from abroad. 5. Articles favorable toward nursing accounted for 54.1%, neutral 28.2%, negative 17.6%. 6. Many articles were written by the reporters (66.3%).

Presence of old newspapers printed with waterbased flexographic inks leads to a significant loss of brightness of the deinked pulp by flotation process. It has been shown that neutral or acidic flotation deinking has many advantages in recycling of flexo printed newsprints. A comparative experimental study was performed to evaluate the deinking efficiency of three alcohol type deinking agents in flotation deinking of flexo printed newspapers. Zeta potential of neutral deinked pulp was less negative than alkaline deinked pulp. Also neutral deinking was advantages in reducing turbidity, COD, and cationic de-mands of deinking process water.

In this work, we have investigated the printability such as print through and str-off of domestic newspapers. Nine kinds of domestic newspapers Hansol, Deahan, Sinho, Hanla and Sepung, were tested by IGT printability tester, and studied using maximum ink requirement method. We obtained the datum of printability parameters such as maximum ink requirment of paper Ymax, printing density D, print through, set-off and gloss. The results of this test showed that a choice of the fillers on the newspaper had an effect on print through, set-off and density of newspapers in the maximum ink transfer point.

In this paper, science news in daily newspapers were reviewed to promote the reader's interest and the public science. The desirable direction in editing science columns was also suggested. For this, following studies were achieved. At first, terminologies used frequently in science columns of the Dong-A Daily News during six months (January 1993 - June), were collected and classified. Thr questionnaire were distributed to university students and general public, to analyze the public concern about the science news. Through the telephone interview with the editing staff of daily newspapers, current status and problems of science columns were investigated. As a result, the several conditions and recommendations are suggested, to promote science columns.

Measuring ink penetration is one of the best ways to know paper printability. Ink penetration was effected by physical properties of newspapers. This study was carried out for the purpose of improvement printability with ink penetration of Korean newspapers. The samples were prepared by means of 7 Newspaper manufacture company in Korea, and were tested by IGT printability tester. The results of this experiments showed that the rate of ink penetration, roughness and porosity are proportioned. While, ink penetration, paper formation, ash content and smoothness of paper are in inverse proportioned.

The purposes of this paper are to show that learning English via on-line English newspapers is very effective and to suggest several applications of an English newspaper on the web in English education to improve Korean speakers' English proficiency. Firstly, this paper overviews about Newspapers In Education (NIE). Secondly, a comparison between an on-line English newspaper and a traditional one is made, focusing on their advantages and characteristics. Thirdly, some ways to use various articles of a digital English newspaper in classroom instruction are explored. Lastly, the suggestions of this study are integrated into English learning instruction of an extracurricular English learning club of Business English Department. This club includes free utilization of an Internet surfing center, Internet Cafe, in a College Library. And then, a survey among the club members is conducted and its statistical results are analyzed.

Hospitals under competitive environment are getting more interested in PR(public relations) as a means of marketing. A typical form of public relations for the hospital is publicity, and its principal instrument is the press release that provides the mass media with the raw material and background for a news story. The purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze the public relations articles associated with hospitals in the section of health care in major daily newspapers. Three major daily newspapers, Chosun, Joongang and Hankyoreh have been analyzed for a year from January 1, 1998 to December 31, 1998. All articles in the health care section are classified by content, size, press comments, and style. This study has found some perverse aspects of the public relations such as the preponderance of health articles on tertiary medical institutions, inappropriate publicity focused on certain medical treatments, doctors, and hospitals, and the positive press comments on the hospitals that are affiliated with the same corporate group as the newspaper.
