Borrowed words which came from Japan are almost related to Japan's traditional dress like Gudu, Gabang, Kimono, Nemaki, Ebijahagama, Hagama, Sirusibanden, Doriachi, Dombi, Sarumada, Sseumeeri, Doriachi, and Mombbe. In terms of items, a lot of words related to men's suit and women's dress, accessory, etc. It confirms that men's dress was westernized in the whole part compared to partially westernized women's one. • Four statistics books, one translated by statisticians and three by non-statisticians, are reviewed. They are reviewed in terms of indices and bibliographies, statistical theory and terms, and the history of statistics. In addition, book review articles appeared in daily newspapers are considered. Unfortunately, we can find many(some of them trivial, and some others serious) problems in the translations. Many problems could have been got around if the books had been translated by statisticians. So, conclusion suggested in this article is very simple: Translation of statistics books, especially books for the laymen, is a job that Korean statisticians should not shift to others. Titles of the books reviewed in this article are as follows. 1. Rao, C. Radhakrishna(1997). Statistics and Truth : Putting Chance to Work, Second edition, World Scientific. 2. Best, Joel (2001). Damnel lies and Statistics : Understanding Numbers from the Media, Politicians, and Activists, University of California Press. 3. Bennett, Deborah J. (1998). Randomness, Harvard University Press; 4. Salsburg, David (2001). The Lady Tasting Tea : How Statistics Revolutionized Science in the Twentieth Century, W. H. Freeman.

  • The increasing use of newsprints in the media and an advertisement have brought the needs to improve the printing quality of the advance full-color newspaper. The printability coefficients used in this research such as Ymax for the density and Tollenaar's density smoothness constant value $\ulcorner$m$\lrcorner$ were introduced early in Europe and have been in use to control printing quality. In order to improve printing quality of domestic full-color newsprints, those printability coefficients could be used to control printing quality. This study was carried out to measure the printability coefficients of domestic full-color newspapers. Four kinds of domestic newspapers and two kinds of newspaper printing inks were tested by IGT printability tester. The printed density smoothness coefficient $\ulcorner$m$\lrcorner$ value showed good results when the samples have low porosity and roughness. The printability coefficients obtained are expected to be useful to the korean newspaper printing industry.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand changes of the current young generation's lifestyle, aesthetic attitude for an appearance, and way of thinking by making a close investigation into metrosexual, the recent mode, and find out its cultural and social implications. As a method of the study, the literature and the Internet data were reviewed. Articles from newspapers, magazines and the Internet were chosen roughly from the year 2000 to now because metrosexual mode remarkably boomed before and after 2000. Books related to the theory on the mode in a costume culture were referred. Also, articles in daily newspapers which dealt with cultural and social issues were reviewed, fashion magazines for men such as Esquire and GQ showing the new trend in men's lifestyle and fashion were examined, and the Internet providing us the latest news from cultural and social topics to fashion trends were investigated. The backgrounds of the rise of metrosexual mode were a collapse of stereotypes in various fields, spread of lookism in a visual image period, extension of commercialism, and expansion of men's character casual trend. Metrosexual was defined as an urban male with a strong aesthetic sense who spends a great deal of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle. His fashion style was characterized by slim and flowing silhouette, feminine and luxurious materials such as transparent chiffon, silk and cotton with a light and soft touch, and a knitted wear with a flowing line, a wide variety of vivid and pastel colors, floral and geometric patterns, and the decorative details like lace, beads, embroidery, and fur. From spread of this mode, two cultural and social implications were extracted. Firstly, the current young generation's aesthetic standards for the perfect man changed from macho man to considerate man who had a good appearance and this suggested that a conventional sex role broke down. Secondly, men began to explore for their own identity escaping from traditionally standardized masculinity that they had been forced to follow.

  • This article examines the influences of Journalist gender and gender ratio in the newsroom on news coverage of women among three national newspapers in Korea. Results reveal that female reporters describe women newsmakers in greater length, of more diversity in occupations, and of more positive pattern than their colleagues, male reporters do. The newspaper employing more female reporters also covers female newsmakers with less personal information, of more diversity in occupations, and of more positive pattern. It is suggested that increase of female reporters in the newsroom induce male reporters to cover women newsmakers toward a pro-female attitude. Lastly, the relation of the gender ratio variation in the news organization and news coverage of women is discussed.
