  • Telecommunication revolution, which was triggered by the convergence of computer and telecommunication technologies, is changing the fundamental fabrics of industrial society. Especially, mass media of our society are forced to face the changes in both their production and distribution processes because of these emerging new technologies. News database industry is an area of new business opened by those technologies which made physical processes of newspaper production and distribution electronic. In this article, the status and trend of Korean newspaper database industry is described in comparison with those of the U.S. and Japan, and the difficulties to overcome are briefly discussed.

  • Uneven ink transfer of a print can be traced to several causes such as an incomplete contact between the paper surface and ink film, a coarse pattern of a continuous ink film after transfer, uneven absorption, etc. Uneven ink transfer was studied in this points by the Tollenaar. Uneven distributions of printed density are reflected in low ${\ulcorner}m{\lrcorner}$ values of the print. Tollenaar's smoothness coefficient ${\ulcorner}m{\lrcorner}$ value was important factor that deciding printed quality which was easily obtain by densitometry. Limiting print density $D_{\infty}$ that obtained Tollenaar's formulation working as a influence factor at the printed quality. In this study, we obtained limiting print density $D_{\infty}$ and smoothness coefficient ${\ulcorner}m{\lrcorner}$ value of domestic newspapers and foreign newspapers. And we analyzed about properties of the newspaper. The result of this study, smoothness coefficient ${\ulcorner}m{\lrcorner}$ value and limiting print density $D_{\infty}$ showed the good results in the low porosity and low roughness newspaper. Datum which obtained by this study was used as printability factor for the quality control and improvement of domestic newspaper and wished to apply as a basic data for the domestic newspaper quality.

  • The traditional newspaper industry faces the opportunities and challenges of industry transformation and integration with new media. Consequently, the catalogs of newspapers and magazines are also updated. In this study, necessary information on catalogs was obtained and used to analyze the overall development trend of the newspaper industry. A word frequency analysis was then performed on the introduction and product categories of the catalogs, and the content and types of newspapers and magazines were examined. Furthermore, related factors such as price, number of pages, publishing frequency, and best-selling status were analyzed; the correlation among factors affecting best-selling status was also explored. Subsequently, each element and a combination of elements were used to generate a dataset, build three classification models, and analyze the accuracy of predictions of whether newspapers sold well under other circumstances. The experimental results showed that price is the most critical factor affecting the best-selling status of newspapers and magazines. Publishing frequency and the number of pages were also found to be significant indicators that impact people's subscription choices. Finally, a competitive strategy regarding content, price, quality, and positioning was developed.

  • To manufacture toilet tissue with ONP (old newspaper), the effect of fractionation fiber (R150, R100, R70 mesh) and bleaching(P, PY), blending (70/30) with MOW(mixed office wastepaper) or WL(white ledger) and the addition of softener on the optical and mechanical properties were studied. Considering the pulp yield, brightness and strengths, fibers of R100 mesh fraction were proper to be produced to toilet paper from ONP. This pulp showed the pulp yield of 76.8%, brightness of 50.2% ISO and tensile index of 21.1 Nm/g. By the bleach with P and PY stages, the brightness of the pulps increased up to 60.3% ISO and 61.8% ISO, respectively. When blended with MOW (57.3% ISO) or WL (76.2% ISO), the brightness of the former increased up to 58.5% ISO, the latter up to 63.6% ISO. The strengths of pulp blended with WL were higher than those of fractionated pulp from 100% ONP, however there was no difference in strengths between fractionated pulp and blended pulp wth MOW. While the addition of softener improved the softness of paper, but it decreased strengths of pulp and extended dispersing time in water.

  • Newsprint is quantitatively the most important printing paper. The demands for its printability are continuously increasing. It is well known that the relationship between the physically tested paper properties and newspaper printability is unsatisfactory. In order to improve the printing quality of Korean newsprint, the printability coefficients such as maximum ink requirement(Ymax), print through were investigated. Kinds of newspapers and black printing ink were tested by IGT printability tester. Experiment condition of IGT printability tester was 14 steps between $0.2{\sim}2.8g/m^2$ of ink requirement, printing pressure was 200 N and printing velocity was 1 m/sec. The properties of newspaper samples (basis weight, bulk density, roughness, smoothness, porosity, i. e.) were examined in accordance with KS and TAPPI standard testing methods. The result of this study are respected for usefulness printing quality management of Korean newsprint.

  • To offer a basic information for the fibers of commercial leaflets, authors examined and analyzed the distribution, size, and printing types of leaflets sandwiched in the newspaper. The number of different leaflet size were almost 30 in two years including B5 ($182{\times}257mm$), A4 ($210{\times}297mm$), B4, ($257{\times}364mm$), A3 ($297{\times}420mm$), and large flyers such as $545{\times}395mm$, and $790{\times}550mm$. The number of different leaflets size were 25 in 2011, which was reduced to 15 in 2012. Both the number and amount of the leaflets were reduced. The high quality leaflets were issued and distributed in the corporate sector and the leaflets issued in other sectors such as shopkeeping, restaurant business, educational institutions were one-sided leaflets printed on single side of the paper. Compared to the previous year, large stores showed the increased number of leaflets but the number of leaflets from restaurant business and educational institutions and building trade were decreased.
