  • Saemangeum Newport plan was included the whole national newport development plans in 1996, and finished the basic execution plan in 1998. Then the government announced that Saemangeum Newport development was selected as the leading project in the field of SOC for the great-sphere economic bloc on September 10, 2008. After the announcement, this paper assumed the new quantity of goods transported and the plans to develop Saemangeum Newport as the specialized port. If Saemangeum Newport and the Food processing complex of the rear area are related to the supplied food materials by developing the overseas agriculture, it's possible to create the effect of synergy. When Saemangeum Newport is developed as the exclusive port for the foodstuffs, we can solve the food problem and this port will be the hub of North-eastern Asia's food production and distribution. This port also will be a proper transit port for the storage of fresh agricultural products to meet the change of the food trend. Therefore, if Saemangeum Newport is developed as the exclusive food port, it will be developed as the competitive port by holding a dominant position.

  • Todo was an uninhabited island located in the sea of Pusan Newport. It was a small island with the height of 32 m above sea level, and its area including the submerged part was approximately 24,400 ㎡. Unfortunately, the island was located exactly in the middle of the narrow entrance way to the North and South Container Wharfs of Pusan Newport so that a number of ships had to turn quickly to avoid collision with the island, which frequently caused collisions with other ships or cranes. To avoid such a danger and make the water way wider and deeper, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries decided to remove the island. This was believed to make even super-large vessels operate safely in the sea of Pusan Newport so that the competitiveness of the port could be highly enhanced. This paper describes in detail the whole process of the removing work, which was the first case of successful underwater blasting operation using bulk emulsion explosives and non-electric detonators to remove a whole island in South Korea.

  • These experiments were conducted to compare the growth characteristics, cold and drought tolerances, disease tolerance and color of the 23 varieties of four different species of cool-season turfgrass introduced from the United States of America and Europe at Yonam College in 1995. Newport and Glade of 8 Kentucky bluegrass varieties were recorded better marks than others. Newport variety was recorded the good marks in the disease tolerance of summer seasons, uniformity, coverage and texture, but the bad marks in color, drought tolerance and rust tolerance and stay green of automn seasons. Glade variety was recorded the good marks in the disease tolerance of summer seasons, uniformity and coverage, but the bad marks in drought tolerance, texture and Pythium blight tolerance. Revel and Revel Jr of 5 tall fescue varieties were recorded better marks than others in color, shoot density, uniformity, coverage, and tolerance of Pythium and Fusarium blight disease. All of red fescue varieties died of disease for rainy season however texture was the finest of all the species in spring season. Dandy of 4 ryegrass varieties was recorded better marks than others in color, shoot density, coverage, drought tolerance and tolerance of Pythium and Fusarium blight disease but texture.

  • In Yongwon channel, its natural flow of seawater is blocked by the construction of Busan Newport including the container berth. The channel was transformed into a narrow and long one, where it is possible that ships are only allowed to pass through the north-side channel of Gyeonmado located at the point of river mouth to Songjeongcheon. In addition, Yongwon channel is approximately 100 m wide on average and 3,600 m long, which has the highest slenderness ratio (length/width=36). So it is considered that the changes in the terrain characteristics of Yongwon channel is likely to alter the circulation of sea water, thereby changing its water quality. In this study, the seasonal change and the spatial variation of the water quality in Yongwon channel was analyzed for the effect of land pollution using the measurement data. The mass balance calculation method is used to analyze the water pollution resulting from sediment pollutants. This result shows that the improvement of the water quality in Yongwon channel can be obtained from the sewer pipe modification and the environmental dredging.

  • Nine (34.6%) of the 26 rockfishes taken from Newport fish market, Oregon in July 2003 had a total of 135 monogenetic trematodes attached the gills. Microcotyle sebastis, Megalocotyle trituba and Trochopus australis were encountered, occurring in rockfishes examined. In the monogenetic trematodes in Sebastes spp, the prevalence were found to be between 30.8 and 40.0%. Prevalence of M. sebastis was 37.5%, 40.0% on M. trituba and 30.8% on T. australis. Nine of Sebastes spp. were infected with one or two species of monogenetic trematodes. Intensities of infection for M. sebastis, M. trituba and T. australis were recorded as 2.0 (2-12), 22.0 (48-62) and 1.0 (1-3), respectively. It may be that the intensities of infection for M. trituba should be high, and M. sebastis and T. australis little low.

  • A total of ten specimens of darkblotched rockfish, Sebastes crameri obtain-ed from Newport fish market were examined for parasites during February, 2002. Eight out of ten S. crameri were found to be infected with metazoan parasites. They were flatworm Trochopus australis, nematoda Anisakis simplex, and copepods Neobrachiella robusta and Chondracanthus triventricosus. Nine (30.0%) T. australis, seven (30.0%) N. robusta, one (10.0%) C. triventricosus and seven (60.0%) A. simplex were infected. Among them, A. simplex was the most abundant and prevalent metazoan parasites in S. crameri. T. australis and N. robsta were found in gills with moderate intensity (1.7 and 1.9, respectively), and C. triventricosus in dorsal fin with low intensity (0.3).

  • This study aimed to determine the current prevalence, serovar distribution and antimicrobial resistance rate and patterns of nontyphoid Salmonella (NTS) in slaughter sheep and their edible offal. While filling the gap of up to date related information in Turkey, data presented is also of significance since contamination of ovine meat, its products and offal with this pathogen is threat to public health due to their considerably high consumption rates in our country. Current NTS carriage in 200 apparently healthy slaughter sheep by ISO 6579:2002, 6579:2002/A1:2007 standard bacteriology (ISO) was 5% (10/200) (4 fecal content - 2%, 3 mesenterial lymph node - 1.5%, 3 kidney - 1.5%) out of 1,400 samples (0.7%), with no isolation from carcass, liver, gallbladder, spleen. Real-time PCR was in substantial agreement to ISO in confirming Salmonella-suspect isolates (Relative Trueness: 93.6%). S. Newport (40%) was the predominant serovar, followed by the second prevalent serovars as S. Typhimurium and S. Kentucky (20%), and by S. Umbilo and S. Corvallis (10%). Four and 6 out of 10 NTS isolates were susceptible (40%) and resistant (60%) to 18 antimicrobials, respectively. S. Typhimurium isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR) to tigecycline and sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim, with one also resistant to cefepime. S. Corvallis was MDR to ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin and pefloxacin. The predominance of S. Newport and first isolation of S. Corvallis in sheep in the world; first time isolations of Newport, Kentucky, Corvallis, Umbilo serovars from sheep in Turkey; and high antimicrobial resistance rates obtained in majority of the isolates highlights study findings.

  • Navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella (Walker) was intercepted at the Korean port of entry. It was detected by an inspection for a consignment of fresh oranges from the USA by the Busan Newport District Office, Yeongnam regional office, Animal Plant and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency on January 31, 2012. This is the first time that the larvae of this pest species has been detected on fresh oranges, although it has been occasionally detected on walnuts. This report aims to ensure biosecurity by providing diagnostic characters to identify the caterpillars and conducting an imported risk analysis on fresh oranges from the USA.
