  • Food consumption and conversion efficiency of new bivoltine hybrids (CSR2$\times$CSR4 and CSR2$\times$CSR5) were studied under restricted feeding levels (10, 20 and 30% less quantity of mulberry leaves). The data were compared with a control fed with standard quantum of feed as per the recommendation. The nutritional indices parameters i. e. ingests, digesta, approximate digestibility (%) and reference ratio were recorded higher in control batches compared to less feed batches while nutritional efficiency parameters i. e., ECI and ECD to cocoon and shell were recorded significantly higher in restricted feeding level batches. This increase is attributed due to the physiological adaptation under nutritional stress condition.

  • Two new yeast records, Cryptococcus adeliensis YJ19-2 and Cryptococcus uzbekistanensis YJ10-4 were screened from 60 yeasts strains that were isolated and identified from wild flowers in Yokjido, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. The morphological and cultural characteristics of the newly recorded yeasts and the physiological functionalities of the supernatants and cell-free extracts obtained from their cultures were investigated. The two newly recorded yeasts did not form ascospores and pseudomycelia. They also grew well in yeast extract-peptone-dextrose broth. C. uzbekistanensis YJ10-4 grew in a vitamin-free medium and was also tolerant to sugar and salt. Antihypertensive angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibitory activity of the supernatant from C. adeliensis YJ19-2 was high (71.8%) and its cell-free extract also showed very high (81.2%) antidiabetic $\acute{a}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity.

  • Two smittinid species, Pleurocodonellina signata and Smittina torques, are new to Korean bryozoan fauna. Smittina elongata recorded as a new species from Japan is synonymized with Pleurocodonellina signata, and Smittina torques has been reported only from Hew Zealand so far. The genus Pleurocodonellina is recorded in Korean waters for the first time.

  • Previously, 13 species in six genera of the subfamily Banchinae and 29 speices in 16 genera of the subfamily Pimplinae were known from Korea. In this paper, two species, Rynchobanchus minomensis (Uchida, 1933) and Theronia laevigata nigra Uchida, 1928 are new to Korea. Also, the genus Rynchobanchus is recorded for the first time in Korea. Only one species of Theronia, Theronia atalantae (Poda, 1761), was recorded from Korea by Uchida (1928). New Korean names proposed for these two species are "Eol-gul-ga-si-maep-si-beol" and "Geom-jeong-nap-jak-maep-si-beol" for the R. minomensis and T. laevigata nigra, respectively. A key to the species of Theronia, diagnosis and photographs of diagnostic characters of them are provided.

  • A new method of automatic recording raingauge is developed to measure rainfall 1200mm full scale with high accuracy and resolution. The principle of new instrument is to detect a weight change of a buoyant weight according to a change in water level of raingauge measured by the use of a strain gauge load cell. This method has the advantage of increasing measurement accuracy, since no moving equipment is used. Laboratory test of the instrument was recorded 0.4% error of 190mm rainfall amount. The validity of new instrument was examined by comparing its measured values with values recorded by automatic weather station on June 24 to 25 2001 at Daegu Meteorological Station, when there is 148.3mm rainfall amount. In spite of much rainfall there is only 0.77mm difference of total rainfall amount. This instrument was accomplished high accuracy and resolution at field test in much rainy day.

  • The genus Parorthocladius is a small group among the subfamily Orthocladiinae (Diptera: Chironomidae). A total of ten species of Parorthocladius have been recorded in the world, of which two species were found from Japan, three species from China, and three species from the Russian Far East. Only one species, P. nudipennis is widely distributed in Europe and the Russian Far East. This genus can be distinguished from other genera by the absence of acrostichals on the thorax, wing vein R4+5 ending proximal to the tip of vein M3+4, anal point parallel side, rounded apically. We report four new species of Parorthocladius collected in Korea and described them with illustrations. As a result, fourteen species of Parorthocladius have been recorded in the world.

  • In this study, three lecanid rotifer species were newly recorded in Korea: Lecane inermis (Bryce, 1892), L. furcata (Murray, 1913), and L. nana (Murray, 1913). Most of the lecanid rotifers recorded in Korea have been collected from stagnant water, and Lecane furcata and L. nana were collected from a reservoir. In contrast, L. inermis was found in a soil sample. Lecane inermis is the first illoricated lecanid species reported in Korea. This species is distinguished from other illoricated species by its toes with relatively long claws. Lecane furcata is the most common lecanid rotifer in submerged vegetation. The morphological characteristics of its lorica are similar to many other lecanid rotifers, but it can be distinguished by its completely fused toes with a terminal fissure, an absence of antero-lateral spines, and the ratio of lorica/toe length. Lecane nana is most similar to L. tryphema Harring & Myers, 1926, but can be distinguished by the toe tips curved outwards. The three species in this study are considered to have a cosmopolitan distribution and have been recorded in many Asian countries. In this paper, we describe the morphological characteristics of the three lecanid species with trophi structures observed by scanning electron microscope.

  • In the present study, hybrid vigour in terms of heterosis and over dominance of newly evolved bivoltine hybrids and their reciprocals raised from the promising newly evolved bivoltine breeds were calculated for the important parameters like pupation, cocoon yield, cocoon weight, shell weight, shell ratio, raw silk percentage, filament length and neatness. Through there was no significant difference among the hybrids for the characters pupation, cocoon yield and cocoon weight, the magnitude of heterosis and over dominance were varied significantly for these characters. However, significant differences were observed between new hybrids and control hybrid for the characters like cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio, filament length and raw silk percentage. The results indicate that majority of new hybrids have shown higher heterosis and over dominance than control hybrid. The data also indicate that highest mean heterosis of all new hybrids was recorded for cocoon yield followed by filament length. Whereas highest mean over dominance was recorded for cocoon yield followed by cocoon weight. Negative mean heterosis and over dominance were recorded for the trait cocoon shell ratio. Based on the results, the importance of three hybrids viz., CSR2 ${\times}$ CSR4, CSR2 ${\times}$ CSR5 and CSR3 ${\times}$ CSR6 and their reciprocals (CSR4 ${\times}$ CSR2, CSR5 ${\times}$ CSR2 and CSR6 ${\times}$ CSR3) which exhibited significant heterosis and over dominance, for commercial exploitation was discussed.

  • Two newly recorded small orb weavers, Araneus yasudai Tanikawa, 2001 and Neoscona flavida sp. nov., with characteristic epigynal scape belonging to Araneidae are described with measurements and morphological illustrations from Korea. Both species were collected with sweep net between shrubs and bushes in mountain forest and between reeds in reclaimed land, respectively.
