  • The genus Eurycletodes Sars, 1909 is reported for the first time in Korea. A new species of the genus Eurycletodes was collected from Hansando Island, South Sea of Korea. So far, Eurycletodes comprises 27 species, with no previously recorded species reported in East Asia, including Korea. Eurycletodes (Oligocletodes) vadumus sp. nov. is morphologically most closely related to E. (O.) denticulatus Por, 1967, E. (O.) aculeatus Sars, 1920, and E. (O.) diva Menzel, 2011, but clearly distinguishable from the others based on the following morphological characteristics: absence of A2 exopodal seta, A1 last segment with two inner setae, P4 exp-3 proximal inner seta modified, the ratio of length and of caudal rami (1.6 times), and mandibular palp with three setae. Together with the new species, the number of valid species in this genus has risen to 28. A key to species of the genus Eurycletodes is provided.

  • A new species belonging to the genus Cyclopinoides Lindberg, 1953 (Cyclopinidae) is described from three beaches in Korea and Japan, as the first record of the genus from the Pacific. Among five species currently recognized in the genus, the new species resembles C. schulzi Herbst, 1964 from the Red Sea in sharing the character combination of 20-segmented antennule and stumpy caudal rami. However, C. orientalis n. sp. differs from it by relatively longer caudal rami (2.5-2.8 times as long as wide in female and about 1.6-1.8 times in male, while less than 2 times in female and about 1.3 times in male of C. schulzi), and by the transformation of an outer distal spine to a slender seta on the distal exopodal segment of leg 4. Moreover, C. orientalis n. sp. is discernible from C. schulzi in having a pyriform copulatory tube (against elongated tubular style in C. schulzi). A key to the species hitherto known in the genus is provided.

  • A new species belonging to the genus Cyclopinopsis Smirnov, 1935 (Cyclopinidae) is described from Korea, as the third species of the genus. Specimens were collected by washing the subtidal sediments off Dokdo Island in the East Sea and the intertidal sands at Baegripo beach, Taean Peninsula on the Yellow Sea coast. Cyclopinopsis deformata n. sp. is characteristic and distinguished from its two congeneric species currently recognized, C. curticauda Smirnov, 1935 and C. brasiliensis Herbst, 1955 in having a deformed seta at the outer distal corner of the third exopodal segment of leg 4. The seta is supposed to be deformed from an outer spine on the third exopodal segment of leg 4, which has been known as completely lost in the genus until now. A character comparison table of the three species and a key to species of the genus Cyclopinopsis are provided herein.

  • Four species of the genus Exochus belonging to the subfamily Metopiinae, family Ichneumonidae, are reported in South Korea for the first time. The subfamily Metopiinae was recorded by Förster in 1869 based on genus Metopius and more than 870 described species have been reported worldwide. Among the genera of Metopiinae, genus Exochus is the largest, which is cosmopolitan and comprises more than 290 described species worldwide (Choi et al., 2016; Yu et al., 2016). A taxonomic study of South Korean Exochus was initiated by Choi et al. (2014), who reported four species. Until now, 10 species have been described as new species and 25 species were recorded as new records of this genus from South Korea (Choi et al., 2014, 2016). In the present study, the following four species are reported in South Korea: Exochus latiareolus Tolkanitz, 2003, E. ornatus Momoi & Kusigemati, 1970, E. pictus Holmgren, 1858, and E. yasumatsui Momoi, Kusigemati & Nakanishi, 1968. In addition, we provide the diagnoses of these four species along with diagnostic photographs.

  • The genus Pholcus Walckenaer, 1805 is the largest genus among the cellar spider family Pholcidae C.L. Koch, 1850, including 339 species. To date, 33 species in the genus are known to be distributed in Korea, being placed into three species-groups(crypticolens-group, phalangioides-group, and phungiformes-group). About 91% of these species are endemic to Korea. In this study, four new species of the genus Pholcus were discovered in Korea, viz, Pholcus chuncheonensis Lee, Choi and Kim sp. nov., Pholcus pajuensis Lee, Choi and Kim sp. nov., Pholcus pocheonensis Lee, Choi and Kim sp. nov., and Pholcus unaksanensis Lee, Choi and Kim sp. nov. These new species are classified as members of the phungiformes-group, having morphological characteristics such as male chelicerae with a frontal apophysis, palpal tibia with a prolateroventral tubercle, and genital bulb without appendix or having pseudo-appendix, but can be distinguished from congeners by characteristics of the male palp and female genitalia. Detailed descriptions and a key to new species are provided with accompanying photographs.
