  • This article aimed at identifying the concept of 'artistic-quality' of furniture and presenting the concept of 'artistic-quality based furniture creation' as the future direction of furniture design. For this, the authors approached to the theoretical background of the concept of artistic-quality, and then examined the prospect of practical application of the concept by analyzing the tendencies in today's art furniture. In this light, 'artistic-quality' of furniture could be understood as a quality that triggers the designer's venturous spirit throughout the process of furniture creation, so that the designer keeps seeking for the novelty and innovation in his experimental design and process. The feature of the current tendencies of art furniture in terms of the expression and effect, which could explain this venturous spirit of artistic-quality based furniture creation, could be summarized as follows; first, High-touch: Furniture that exemplifies the artistic-quality by specific texture of handmade quality, second, High-feeling: Furniture that arouses the new feelings and new concepts of furniture structure & function by experiments on new abstract forms of furniture, and third, High-mentality: Furniture that leads us to the sphere of subtle aesthetic recognition and mentality with its specific poetic expression and sensibility.

  • Social and economic changes in the world, along with changes in the culture of government and structural changes in the relationship between the state, the market and higher education institutions, have resulted in new approaches pursued by states towards higher education (Konstantinov & Philonovich, 2007; Peterka, 2011). Higher education institutions, in its turn, enjoy more freedom in choosing to focus on various tasks and goals to their academic activities. This contributes to the diversity of expectations when it comes to the various roles modern academic institutions take on with regard to their development. Among many existing concepts in the current academic environment, the concept of "entrepreneurial university" is becoming a critically important concept in Russia. In this article, we consider the concept of the Entrepreneurial University as developed in Clark and Etzkowitz's theories, and the ways the concept is being adjusted in the higher education system in Russia. We analyze comparatively both contemporary and prior historical [1990s-mid2000s] state policies pertaining to higher-education institutions in Russia in order to provide an insight into how the national market of knowledge intensive production is being established in the country. As a consequence of these analyses, we present a new model of how universities can take a more systemic and meaningful approach to creating research-based innovation entrepreneurial activities. This approach is also viewed as making universities' innovation activities more sustainable and thus less dependent on the state support.

  • A fluid transport technique is a key issue for the development of microfluidic systems. In this paper, a new concept for transporting a droplet without external power sources is proposed and verified numerically. The proposed device is a heterogeneous surface which has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic horizontal surfaces. The numerical simulation to demonstrate the new concept is conducted by an in-house solution code (PowerCFD) which employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method (CICSAM) in a volume of fluid (VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. It is found that the proposed concept for droplet transport shows superior performance for droplet transport in microfluidic systems.

  • This paper presents a new design concept for ocean nuclear power plants (ONPPs) using a tension leg platform (TLP). The system-integrated modular advanced reactor, which is one of the successful small modular reactors, is mounted for demonstration. The authors define the design requirements and parameters, modularize and rearrange the nuclear and other facilities, and propose a new total general arrangement. The most fundamental level of design results for the platform and tendon system are provided, and the construction procedure and safety features are discussed. The integrated passive safety system developed for the gravity based structure-type ONPP is also available in the TLP-type ONPP with minor modifications. The safety system fully utilizes the benefits of the ocean environment, and enhances the safety features of the proposed concept. For the verification of the design concept, hydrodynamic analyses are performed using the commercial software ANSYS AQWA with the Pierson-Moskowitz and JONSWAP wave spectra that represent various ocean environments and the results are discussed.

  • A new concept of membrane type LNG CCS was proposed. Also, its static behavior was numerically analyzed considering the interaction between primary and secondary barrier together with securing device. Hull deflection was taken into account as an external load, together with temperature distribution across the barriers. The suggested numerical model considers both sliding and contact between the two mating surfaces of both the primary and secondary barrier, and anisotropic material behavior of plywood, R-PUF was also taken into account. Furthermore, detailed local strength was evaluated for the securing device, which is arranged between two barriers to hold the primary barrier. It was confirmed through the numerical analysis that the new concept of membrane type CCS was structurally safe under static loading condition and securing concept was structurally reliable.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the Daniel Libeskind' spatial concept in view of the Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology. After the coming of postmodern architecture, the concept of space ceased to be discussed between architects. Instead a sign and a form were supposed as much more important subject to define architectural discipline. But after 1980, the new concept of architectural space was experimented by the architects like Frank Gehry, Peter Eisenman, Steven Hall, and Bernard Tschumi, which was clearly distinguished from modern spatial concept. By the Daniel Libeskind' architecture, this study are to make clear this tendency. For this, we accept as an important instrument Meleau-Ponty's phenomenology and the spatial concept of Minimalism, which stress the relationship of inter-subjectivity between space and human body. Consequently, Daniel Libeskind' spatial concept is characterized by fragmental, accidental, heterogeneous space by accidental events which is occurred by movement of human, which was indentified with Merleau-Ponty's spatial concept.

  • The concept of Holon was suggested by A. Koestler in his paper(1967) "The Ghost in the Machine." It became one of the central concept of the Intelligent Manufacturing System. In this paper, a new system concept: Holonic Weapon System was introduced. HWS has the advantages of the holonic system and the system integration technique so that the future unmanned combat system should consider this concept.

  • In this study, the concept of lacunary statistical convergence is studied in G-metric spaces. The G-metric function is based on the concept of distance between three points. Considering this new concept of distance, we examined the relationships between GS, GSθ, Gσ1 and GNθ sequence spaces.

  • In general, conventional search engines provide the same search results for the same queries of users, and however such techniques do not consider users' characteristics. To overcome this problem, we need a new way of personalized search which returns customized search results according to users' preference. In this paper, we propose a concept network profile-based personalized web search system in which the concept network is developed for accumulating users' characteristics. The concept network-based user profile is used to expand initial search queries to achieve personalized search. The concept network is a network structure of concepts where each concept is generated whenever each query is submitted, and it can be defined as a set of keywords extracted from the selected documents. Furthermore, we have improved the concept networks by augmenting intent keywords of each concept with a set of classification tags, called folksonomy, assigned to each document. For an additional personalized search technique, we propose a new re-ranking method that analayzes the degree of overlapped search results.

  • This thesis develops a more realistic and applicable new set covering model that is adjusted and supplied by the existing set covering models, and induces an algorithm for solving the new set covering model, and applies the new model and the algorithm to an actual set covering problems. The new set covering model introduces a probabilistic covering aistance ($0{\eqslantless}p{\eqslantless}1$)or time($0{\eqslantless}p{\eqslantless}1$) instead of a deterministic covering distance(0 or 1) or time (0 or 1) of the existing set covering model. The existing set covering model has not considered the merit of the overcover of customers. But this new set covering model leads a concept of this overcover to a concept of the parallel system reliability. The algorithm has been programmed on the UNIVAC 9030 for solving large-scale covering problems. An application of the new set covering model is presented in order to determine the locations of the air surveillance radars as a set covering problem for a case-study.
