In order to analyze the characteristics of tidal current power generation system, we measured the output power according to the stream velocity by a water tunnel system and a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. The water tunnel system consisted of impeller tidal flow transducer and PMSG with rotor in the water. The simulation consisted of PMSG, the tidal current turbine, and back-to-back converter. Also, we simulated the characteristics of output power according to the change of blade length and angular velocity.
As the distributed generation becomes more reliable and economically feasible, it is expected that a higher application of the distributed generation units would be interconnected to the existing grids. This new generation technology is linked to a large number of factors like economics and performance, safety and reliability, market regulations, environmental issues, or grid connection constrains. KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) is performing the project to develope the Distributed Micro Gas Turbine (MGT) technolgies by using Swine BIO-ENERGY. This paper describes the plans and strategies for the renewable energy of MGT on actual grid-connection under Korean situations. KEPCO also, has a research plan on bio-gas pretreatment system applicable to our domestic swine renewable resources and is performing concept design of pilot plant to test grid operation. In addition, this testing will be conducted in order to respond to a wide variety of needs for application and economic evaluation in the field of On-site generation.
Recently, the Korean government announced a plan to activate renewable energies, with focus on clean energy sources such as solar and wind power as the core and the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Unlike other photovoltaic (PV) systems, offshore PV installations are advantageous for large-scale expansion because of the ease of securing sites; they also enable lowering the power generation costs based on construction of large-scale power facilities of megawatt class or higher owing to low noise and landscape damage. However, any power generation should proceed with consideration of the special environmental conditions of the ocean. Above all, when installing large-scale facilities, it is important to reduce fluctuations of the structure and secure stability to actively respond to waves. This study is concerned with the development of a floating body technology that actively responds to waves so as to enable commercialization of offshore solar power. A unit platform for research and development on offshore PV generation was installed in the Saemangeum sea, and the structural fluctuations and stability were analyzed to ensure conformity with the major performance indicators.
T Recently, the government has been promoting the expansion and supply of renewable energy as an alternative for achieving carbon neutrality and the nationally determined contributions by 2030. In 2020, the Ministries of Industry and Environment and the Korea Forest Service collaborated to build a nationwide onshore wind energy siting atlas considering wind resources and forestry and environmental regulations focused on central regulations. In this study, the ordinances of the local governments were analyzed to examine the effects of regional location regulations on the expansion of onshore wind power energy generation facilities, in addition to those of central regulations. A development permit standard survey of 226 urban plan ordinances of the local governments nationwide showed that presently in 2022, 52 municipalities are applying regulations on wind energy generation facilities by ordinances. This is twice more than that in 2018, when renewable energy power generation facility development was difficult. Additionally, the location regulations applied by these ordinances were organized by items and regions, and regulatory characteristics, such as the number and scope, were analyzed by regions. To analyze the spatial distribution characteristics, JeollaNamdo was selected as the case area. A spatial DB was established for regulated areas based on the regional and central regulations, and the spatial distribution characteristics and the regulatory scope were compared and analyzed.

Robust optimal operation of a microgrid is required since the increase of the penetration level of renewable generators in the microgrid raises uncertainty due to their intermittent power output. In this paper, an application of probabilistic optimization method to economical operation of a microgrid is studied. To simplify the treatment of the uncertainties of renewable generations and load, the new 'band of virtual equivalent load variation' is introduced considering their uncertainties. A simplified robust optimization methodology to generate the scenarios within the band of virtual equivalent load variation and to obtain the optimal solution for the worst scenario is presented based on Monte Carlo method. The microgrid to be studied here is composed of distributed generation system(DGs), battery systems and loads. The distributed generation systems include combined heat and power(CHP) and small generators such as diesel generators and the renewable energy generators such as photovoltaic(PV) systems and wind power systems. The modeling of the objective function for considering interruption cost by the penalty function is presented. Through the case study for a microgrid with uncertainties, the validity of proposed robust optimization methodology is evaluated.
Compared with a traditional power system of electricity providers, distributed power systems consist of power suppliers which are small and demand-oriented. Each small power supplier tends to utilizes renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. It is because that home renewable energy systems do not need a large scale infrastructure which is required for traditional power plants. In this work we study an economic feasibility of such a renewable energy source. We describe how renewable power generation works and what it brings in terms of economic benefits. Also, we analyze limitations by the current policy and their possible solutions.
This study estimated the available renewable market potential based on Levelized Cost Of Electricity and then assessed the renewable derived energy self-sufficiency for the unit of local government in South Korea. To calculate energy self-sufficiency, 1 km gridded market renewable generation and local government scale of final energy consumption data were used based on the market costs and statistics for the recent three years. The results showed that the estimated renewable market potentials were 689 TWh (Install capacity 829 GW, 128 Mtoe), which can cover 120% of power consumption. 55% of municipalities can fully replace the existing energy consumption with renewable energy generation and the surplus generation can compensate for the rest area through electricity trade. However, it was confirmed that, currently, 47% of the local governments do not fully consider all renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro and geothermal in establishing 100% renewable energy. The results of this study suggest that energy planning is decentralized, and this will greatly contribute to the establishment of power planning of local governments and close the information gap between the central government, the local governments, and the public.
Current feed-in tariffs(FIT) of Electricity generating from new and renewable energy sources are reappraised with the corrected formula of levelized generation cost(LGC) of utility power. The LGC of new and renewable electricity should be formulated in explicitly reflecting the capital cost and corporate tax during the economic life cycle based on its realistic application data. An applicable term of the FITs should, especially, be equal to the economic life cycle. The revised FITs issued in 2006 were, however, derived from the incorrect formula described in the study of KERI(Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute), and consequently misestimated. The reappraisal values for FIT of new and renewable electricity were shown and interpreted in this paper. An FIT of PV more than 30 kW, for example, should be 972.86 won/kWh instead of current 677.38 won/kWh increasing 43.6%. An upward revision of other FITs for new and renewable electricities should also be required in the range of 8.6% to 47.3%.
A study was conducted to analyze data from 1981 to 2020 for understanding the impact of climate on solar energy generation. A significant increase of 104.6 kWhm-2 was observed in the annual cumulative solar radiation over this period. Notably, the distribution of solar radiation shifted, with the solar radiation in Busan rising from the seventh place in 1981 to the second place in 2020 in South Korea. This study also examined the correlation between long-term temperature trends and solar radiation. Areas with the highest solar radiation in 2020, such as Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, and Jinju, exhibited strong positive correlations, suggesting that increased solar radiation contributed to higher temperatures. Conversely, regions like Seosan and Mokpo showed lower temperature increases due to factors such as reduced cloud cover. To evaluate the impact on solar energy production, simulations were conducted using climate data from both years. The results revealed that relying solely on historical data for solar energy predictions could lead to overestimations in some areas, including Seosan or Jinju, and underestimations in others such as Busan. Hence, considering long-term climate variability is vital for accurate solar energy forecasting and ensuring the economic feasibility of solar projects.
