New records of the marine pennate diatoms in Korea

  • A study on indigenous diatoms was carried out at 49 sites from November 2008 to December 2012 in the marine and brackish plankton and benthic ecosystem in Korea. The structure of small-sized pennate diatoms was examined by means of light and scanning electron microscopy. Twenty species of diatoms were newly identified and divided into five orders, 18 families, and nine genera in this study. The nomenclature, references, specimens examined, specimen descriptions, photographs, and distribution profiles are reported here. The newly reported pennate diatoms imply several reasons why these taxa have not been recorded previously in Korea and we present the strategy to understand the diversity of diatoms in Korea.

  • Two new records of spionid polychaetes, Prionospio pulchra Imajima, 1990 and Scolelepis (Scolelepis) sagittaria Imajima, 1992, collected from Korean waters are reported here with detailed descriptions and illustrations. Prionospio pulchra can be distinguished from its relatives by remarkably long and apinnate branchiae, the first chaetiger with notopodial chaetae, and the presence of ventral sabre chaetae. Scolelepis (Scolelepis) sagittaria is characterized by a sagittate prostomium, an occipital tentacle, and bi- or tridentate hooded hooks. In this paper, photographs of scanning electron microscopy for characteristic features of each species are presented. Keys to Prionospio and Scolelepis species from Korean waters are also provided.

Notes on Lichen Genus Buellia De Not. (lichenized Ascomycetes) from South Korea

  • Based on a literature survey and assessment of the important features of lichen genus Buellia (spore shape and size, anatomy of the exciple as well as analysis of the lichen substances), the present paper describes four new records of B. maritima, B. polyspora, B. spuria and B. stellulata from South Korea. Among them, B. maritima and B. polyspora are firstly reported in East Asia including in China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Brief description of all the new records along with earlier described species placed under genus Amandinea and Hafellia are provided with their distribution and chemistry. A key to all the Buellia species reported so far from South Korea is also provided.

  • Two species of the genus Andaspis, Andaspis crawii (Cockerell) and Andaspis kashicola (Takahashi) are newly recorded in the Korean fauna of armored scales (Diaspididae). A key to species of Andaspis, illustrative photographs and information on the distribution and hosts of each species, are also provided to identify the specimens of Andaspis collected in Korea.

  • Acinetospora filamentosa and Microspongium stilophorae are reported as new records from South Korea based on morphological and molecular analyses. A. filamentosa is mainly characterized by having the sparsely branched erect filaments, the scattered meristematic zones, forming crampons, plurilocular sporangia on both prostrate filaments and lower part of erect filaments, and spherical to oval unilocular sporangia formed either sessile or with a pedicel. M. stilophorae is an epiphytic thalli mostly on Stilophora sp. It is characterized by prostrate filaments with irregular cells, short erect filaments with short ramuli, phaeophycean hairs, uniseriate plurilocular sporangia on the terminal part of erect filament. Our molecular analyses of rbcL and cox1 genes reveals that A. filamentosa and M. stilophorae are nested within the clades of Acinetospora and Microspongium, respectively.

  • This study illustrates the status of thelotremoid Graphidaceae in South Korea. The taxonomy and systematics of thelotremoid lichens in the country have recently advanced greatly. Following the earlier known taxa from the group, four new records of the genus Thelotrema are reported and described briefly. An artificial key for all known species under thelotremoid group of Graphidaceae from South Korea is also provided.

New records of Parasitidae mites (Acari; Mesostigmata) in Korea

  • Korean fauna mites in the family Parasitidae of Mesostigmata were reported as 6 genera, 22 species. Among those 20 species were recorded from Northern part of Korea by Athias-Henriot (1977; 1980), Daele (1975) and Tichomirov (1977), but two from Southern part of Korea by Choi (1994) and Korean zoological record (KSSZ, 1997). During the faunal study of soil predatory mites of diverse habitats in South Korea, four species of P. beta, P. fimetorum, P. insignis and Poecilochirus carabi are the new records to Korean peninsula. Taxonomic details and other biological characteristics are reported.

Five new records of ostracods (Crustacea) from Korea

  • We briefly report the observation of five ostracod species: Scottia birigida Smith, Matzke-Karasz, Kamiya and Ikeda, 2002; Codonocera mortenseni Poulsen, 1962; Pyrocypris noctiluca Kajiyama, 1912; Euconchoecia cf. chierchiae Muller, 1890; and E. pacifica Chavtur, 1976. All five species are new records of Korean ostracod fauna. Specimens were collected during the 2014-2016 Korean Indigenous Species project. For three species we also include mtCO1 sequences. Currently, there are 65 published reports of indigenous Korean ostracod species.

New Records of Cold-Water Corals from Korea

  • Two cold-water coral taxa, Octocorallia in the class Anthozoa and Stylasteridae in the class Hydrozoa, were identified. Deep-water samples were collected in fishing nets at depths ranging between 20 and 200 m along the coasts of the East Sea in Korea from 1976 to 1993. The two species found in this study represent new records for Korea: Paragorgia arborea (Linnaeus, 1758) in the class Anthozoa, and Stylaster profundiporus Broch, 1936 in the class Hydrozoa. Two families, Paragorgiidae and Stylasteridae, are also newly recorded in Korea. Furthermore, the species name of another cold-water gorgonian species, Primnoa pacifica (Kinoshita, 1907) in the family Primnoidae, is amended in this report. The two newly recorded cold-water coral species from Korea are described in detail based on their morphological characteristics. Paragorgia arborea is characterized by its growth form, medulla and cortex, zooid dimorphism, canal system, and spicule composition. Stylaster profundiporus is distinguished by its external skeletal characteristics, such as the coordination of dactylopores and gastropores, presence or absence of gastrostyles and dactylostyles, cyclosystem orientation, ampullar position, gastropore tube shape, and coenosteal texture.

  • The species of Aphelopus Dalman (Hymenoptera: Dryinidae) from South Korea are reviewed. Sixteen species are listed, of which fifteen are new records from South Korea: Aphelopus atratus (Dalman, 1823); Aphelopus bennetti Olmi, 2004; Aphelopus camus Richards, 1939; Aphelopus luteoceps Xu & He, 1999; Aphelopus maetoi Olmi, 1995; Aphelopus malayanus Olmi, 1984; Aphelopus melaleucus (Dalman, 1818); Aphelopus nepalensis Olmi, 1984; Aphelopus nigriceps Kieffer, 1905; Aphelopus prolatus Mita & Olmi, 2014; Aphelopus querceus Olmi, 1984; Aphelopus serratus Richards, 1939; Aphelopus spadiceus Xu & He, 1997; Aphelopus urbaini Olmi, 2003; Aphelopus zhaoi Xu, He & Olmi, 1998. Keys to South Korean species of Aphelopus are also provided.
