Quayside Container Cranes in Year 2013

  • In this paper, design specifications for a new generation container crane in year 2013 is investigated. After analyzing the trend of the development of container cranes from the 1950s to date, a prospective size for targeting year 2013 is proposed. Introductory specifications of the frame, trolley, hoist and spreader for the proposed new crane are discussed. Considering that the mega-ships will load and unload more than 15000 boxes at one stop, rough dimensions of the crane including outreach, rail gage, lift, backreach, etc. are also suggested. Although the sheer size of the cranes already present some challenges, the biggest challenge is to improve productivity by maximizing the moves per hour. For this, the speeds of trolleys and hoists, rail loads, stability, etc. are discussed.

  • The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code which was developed as the main response of the shipping sector to the miserable event of 11 September 2001 came into effect on 1 July 2004. The ISPS Code designed to detect and eliminate security threats affecting ships and port facilities used in international trade will significantly impact not only on the management and operation of the shipping industry but also on maritime law despite the fact that it is the regulatory framework of public law. It is expected that implementing the ISPS Code will contribute to reinforcement of maritime security on the one hand. However, on the other hand, more intensified security inspection and control measures of port states will also cause delay and additional costs which cause uncertainty in allocating security risk and cost between the contracting parties. Therefore, it is desire to insert new security clause dealing with main security issues or adapt existing clauses to new shipping environments to minimize disputes.

  • 인천신항 내 기존 준설토 투기장은 2018년에 수토가 완료 될 예정이므로 향후 항만개발과 운영시 발생되는 준설토의 원활한 처리를 위해서는 신규 준설토 투기장 조성이 필요하다. 투기장 조성을 위해서는 중 장기적인 준설토 처리방안 등을 고려한 항만기능 향상과 경쟁력 강화를 위한 준설토 투기장 호안 축조가 선행되어야 하기 때문에 극동건설 컨소시움에서는 퍼펙트델타라는 설계컨셉을 수립하고 내구성과 안전성을 강화한 설계, 조기수토 공간확보 및 수토용량 증대, 자연과 인간 도시가 함께하는 환경 친화적인 설계, 현장여건에 가장 적합한 설계를 구현하였다.

The Examination for Design of Hatchcoverless Containerships (무개형 콘테이너선 설계에 관한 고찰)

  • In recent years the hatchcoverless(or open-top) containerships have been evolving as a promising new concept for enhanced containership operations. The design concept of the hatchcoverless containership is innovative and appears to be worthwhile. especially from an operational viewpoint. The hatchcover and container lashing system have been eliminated and the containers are stacked in open hold fitted with cell guides. Thus this design concept can provide a more efficient and economically viable fleet due to the reduced time and cost of loading and unloading operations. Therefore turnaround time in port is also greatly reduced. This examination provides. brief background, advantages, brief review of new building containership, highlights of the pertinent areas requiring special consideration and recommendations of possible analyses herein.

  • Significant increase of container flows in the marine terminals requires more efficient port equipments such as logistic and transfer systems. This paper presents collision avoidance and routing approach based on dynamic programming (DP) algorithm for a linear motor based shuttle car which is considered as a new transfer system in the port terminals. Most of routing problems are focused on automatic guided vehicle (AGV) systems, but its solutions are hardly utilized for LM based shuttle cars since both are mechanically different. Our proposed DP is implemented for real-time searching of an optimal path for each shuttle car in the Agile port terminal located at California in USA.

Extraction of Substrate Resistance Parameters for RF MOSFETs Based on Three-Port Measurement

  • In this work, a new method for extracting substrate parameters of RF MOSFETs based on 3-port measurement is presented using device simulation. A T-type substrate resistance network is used. 3-port Y-parameter analyses were performed on the equivalent circuit of RF MOSFETs. All the components in the RF MOSFETs when the device is turned off were extracted directly from the 3-port device simulation data. The small-signal output admittance $Y_{22}$ can be well modeled up to 40 GHz. From the 3-port simulation and modeling results, it was verified that the proposed equivalent circuit and parameter extraction method was more accurate than the single substrate resistance model.

Air Pollution Reduction Strategies of World Major Ports

  • Pollution emissions from international shipping and port activities have a significant impact on public health and global climate changes. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of pollution mitigation measures implemented to date in port industry and find out some implications for Korean ports. For this aim, the clean air strategies of the world major ports including six USA ports (Los Angeles/Long Beach, Now York/New Jersey, and Seattle and Tacoma), two European ports (Rotterdam and Gothenburg) and Busan Port were considered. Various measures to reduce emission from ports are evaluated by sectors-ocean going vessels, cargo handling equipments, truck and rail-, on the basis of categories such as reduction control technologies, operational changes and market-based measures. The policy implications of this paper are as follows. First, Clean Air Act Plans of Korean ports are required as soon as possible. Second, integrated approach is required to reduce emission effectively. Finally, the effect of port-related emission reduction can be maximized when various measures are conducted on a regional basis including neighboring ports. Furthermore, regional or global-based approach is useful to guarantee the level playing field among ports.

  • Since world container throughput continues to grow, the main issues facing decision-makers at port container terminals are how to expand the existing container terminals and construct new container terminals. Simulations can be used in the decision making process tools due to its ease and ability to reflect the real world system. The object-oriented approach provides for both reusability and modularity that best fits these requirements. In this paper, the object-oriented approach to modeling and simulating general container terminals is presented.   • Foundation soils are greatly influenced on the stability of structures. The soft clay deposited in Incheon Port area is named either nomally consolidated clay or unconsolidated clay. New harbor structures will be constructed in Incheon Port area. Not sufficient soil boring datum are obtained from the filed soil exploration due to limited time and cost. The harbor construct site is pretty large area and the soils are not homogenous. This paper presented the result of reliability analysis which was performed by both Bayesian approach and analysis of variance.
