A REVIEW OF NEUTRON SCATTERING CORRECTION FOR THE CALIBRATION OF NEUTRON SURVEY METERS USING THE SHADOW CONE METHOD

  • The calibration methods of neutron-measuring devices such as the neutron survey meter have advantages and disadvantages. To compare the calibration factors obtained by the shadow cone method and semi-empirical method, 10 neutron survey meters of five different types were used in this study. This experiment was performed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI; Daejeon, South Korea), and the calibration neutron fields were constructed using a $^{252}Californium$ ($^{252}Cf$) neutron source, which was positioned in the center of the neutron irradiation room. The neutron spectra of the calibration neutron fields were measured by a europium-activated lithium iodide scintillator in combination with KAERI's Bonner sphere system. When the shadow cone method was used, 10 single moderator-based survey meters exhibited a smaller calibration factor by as much as 3.1-9.3% than that of the semi-empirical method. This finding indicates that neutron survey meters underestimated the scattered neutrons and attenuated neutrons (i.e., the total scatter corrections). This underestimation of the calibration factor was attributed to the fact that single moderator-based survey meters have an under-ambient dose equivalent response in the thermal or thermal-dominant neutron field. As a result, when the shadow cone method is used for a single moderator-based survey meter, an additional correction and the International Organization for Standardization standard 8529-2 for room-scattered neutrons should be considered.

자성소재 연구를 위한 중성자산란 입문 (Introduction to Neutron Scattering for Magnetic Materials Research)

  • ${\AA}$의 파장과 수 meV에서 수백 meV의 에너지를 가지는 중성자는 물질의 구조와 동역학을 연구하는데 적절한 특징을 가지고 있다. 이런 중성자 산란은 지난 60여년 동안 발전되어 이제는 응집물질물리학을 비롯한 다양한 재료과학 분야에서 대표적이고 핵심적인 실험방법으로 자리잡았다. 본고에서는 이런 중성자 산란을 이용한 구조 및 동역학 연구의 기본 원리를 설명하고 간단한 예를 제시한다.

  • 단결정 $KMnCl_3$, $LiNbO_3$$Mg-LiNbO_3$의 bulk 성질을 중성자 산란을 이용하여 측정하였다. 본 연구는 편광 빛을 사용하여 보이는 좋은 단결정이라도 이들의 bulk 성질을 정확히 파악하기 위하여는 중성자 산란으로 재측정하여야 함을 보여준다. 중성자 산란에서 나타나는 $KMnCl_3$, 의 큰 mosaic 분포는 이 결정이 단일 구역을 갖는 단결정이 아니고 축에 대해 작은 각으로 분포되어 있는 구역 군들이 상대적으로 여러 방향으로 존재함을 보여준다. $LiNbO_3$ 에서 나타는 작은 mosaic분포는 큰 구역들이 서로 가까이 정렬되어 있고 Mg가 첨가된 $LiNbO_3$ 는 잘 키워진 단결정으로 나타났다.

Ordering of manganese spins in photoconducting $Zn_{1-x}Mn_xTe$

  • Single crystals of{{{{ { Zn}_{ 1-x} {Mn }_{x }{Te} }}}} with x=0.3-0.6 were prepared by the standard Bridgeman method. Diffuse neutron diffraction intensities due to the short range magnetic ordering is found in the vicinities of 1 1/2 0 reciprocal point and its equivalent point, indicating that the magnetic correlation of the clusters is the type III antiferromangetic one do the F-type Bravais class crystals, being identical with that of {{{{{ Cd}_{ 1-x} {Mn }_{x }Te }}}}. Neutron inelastic scattering measure-ment has been performed for {{{{{ Zn}_{ 0.6} { Mn}_{ 0.4}Te }}}} sample using the cold neutron spectrometer. AGNES. High resolution measurement with the energy resolution of {{{{ TRIANGLE E= +- .01meV}}}} was carried out in the temperature range from 10K to the ambient. Critical scattering, closely related with the spin glass transition, has been observed for the first time in this semimagnetic semi-conductor. The critical scattering is observed at temperatures in the vicinity of the spin glass transition temperature, 17K. The scattering is observed as a kind of quasielastic scattering in the reciprocal range where the elastic magnetic diffuse scattering has been observed, e.g., 11/20 reciprocal point, indicating the spin fluctuation has dynamic components in this material. Photoconductivity has been discovered below 150K in {{{{{ Zn}_{ 0.4} {Mn }_{0.6 } Te}}}}. The electric AC conductivity has been increased dramatically under the laser light with the wave lengths of {{{{ lambda =6328,5145 and4880 }}}}$\AA$ ,respectively. After the light was darkened, the conductivity was reduced to the original level after about 2000 seconds at 50K, being above the spin glass transition temperature. This phenomenon is the typical persistent photoconductivity; PPC which was similarly found in {{{{ { Zn}_{ 1-x} { Mn}_{x} Te}}}}.

Diamond-based neutron scatter camera

  • In this study, a diamond-based neutron scatter camera (DNSC) was developed for neutron spectroscopy in high flux environments. The DNSC was evaluated experimentally and through simulations. It was simulated using several Monte Carlo codes in a two-array layout. The two-array model included two diamond detectors. The simulation reconstructed the spectra of 252Cf and 239Pu-Be neutron sources with high accuracy (~93%). The two-diamond array system was experimentally evaluated, demonstrating the neutron spectroscopy capabilities of the DNSC. The reconstructed spectrum of the 239Pu-Be source manifested the characteristic peaks of the source. The advantage of a DNSC over a NSC is its ability to define any neutron double-scattering events without the need to absorb incident neutrons in the second detector, and atomic recoil energy information is not needed to determine the incident neutron energy.

Low Temperature Magnetization and Spin Wave Excitations in Amorphous Fe67 Co18B14Si1

  • The temperature dependent saturation magnetization curve of amorphous Fe67 Co18B14Si1, alloy was measured using a SQUID magnetometer and vibrating sample magnetometer from 5 K up to 800 K. Inelastic neutron neutron scattering measurements also have been used to study the long wavelength spin dynamics of this high Tc amorphous ferromagnetic alloy. The magnon dispersion curve exhibit the conventional quadratic relationship E = D (T) q2 + $\Delta$, typical of an iso=obtained from a low temperature magnetization curve, which was consistent with the value obtained from the analysis oif inelastic neutron scattering data after consideration of its temperature dependence.

중성자 소각 산란(Small Angle Neutron Scattering)을 이용한 모델 고분자 미셀의 구조 분석 (Structure analysis of polymeric micelles using SANS)

  • 모델 고분자 미셀(서로 결합하거나, 결합하지 않는 두 경우)의 구조를 분석하기 위해 중성자 소각 산란(small angle neutron scattering)법을 이용하였다. 소수성 결합체의 응집수와 농도의 증가에 따른 정렬상태의 변화를 폴리에틸렌글라이콜(PEG, 6 K나 10 K고몰 분자량) 끝에 불화알킬그룹(pefluoroalkyl groups $(-(CH_2)_2C_OnF_{2n+1}$, (n = 6, 8,혹은 10)이 붙은 고분자용액을 이용하여 분석하였다. 결합체의 응집수는 소수성 말단기의 길이에 의해서만 주로 결정이 되고, 고분자의 농도나 온도에 의해 영향을 받지 않는다. 또한, 서로 결합하는 고분자 미셀과, 서로 결합하지 않는 고분자 미셀간에도 결합수에는 차이가 없다. 이러한 모델계는 농도가 증가함에 따라서 체심 입방구조로 정렬된다.

  • 분자의 병진운동과 회전운동의 상관함수에 대한 감쇠함수 모델을 사용하여 분자액체의 비간섭중성자 산란단면적을 분석하였다. 이러한 방법은 직접적으로 산란함수를 구한다는 점에서 중간함수를 거치는 종래의 방법과는 판연히 다르다. 감쇠함수는 그장파장극한과 일반진동수 분포함수간의 간단한 관계에서 결정하였고 병진운동과회전 운동의 결합관계는 무시된다고 가정하였다. 분자질량중심의 병진운동은 그 짧은 시간과 장시간에서의 행위를 적절히 기술하는 물리적 모텔을 사용하였고 회전운동은 쌍극상관함수 또는 적외선진동 홈수스펙트럼의 푸리어 변환으로 된 감쇠함수에 관계된다고 가정하였다. 액체메탄에 대한 이론적 절대 산란강도를 계산하였으며 이는 열 및 냉중성자 측정치와 만족할만한 일치를 보여주고 있다.

하나로 냉중성자 유도관 시스템을 위한 인파일 플러그 및 주개폐기의 설계 (Design of the In-pile Plug Assembly and the Primary Shutter for the Neutron Guide System at HANARO)

  • The HANARO, a 30 MW multi-purpose research reactor in Korea, will be equipped with a neutron guide system, in order to transport cold neutrons from the neutron source to the neutron scattering instruments in the neutron guide hall near the reactor building. The neutron guide system of HANARO consists of the in-pile plug assembly with in-pile guides, the primary shutter with in-shutter guides, the neutron guides in the guide shielding room with dedicated secondary shutters, and the neutron guides connected to the instruments in the neutron guide hall. The functions of the in-pile plug assembly are to shield the reactor environment from a nuclear radiation and to support the neutron guides and maintain them precisely oriented. The primary shutter is a mechanical device to be installed just after the in-pile plug assembly, which stops neutron flux on demand. This paper describes the mechanical design of the in-pile plug assembly and the primary shutter for the neutron guide system at HANARO. The design of the guide shielding assembly for the primary shutter and the neutron guides is also presented.
