  • The skyshine effect is an essential and important phenomenon in the shielding design of the high energy accelerator. In this study, a new estimation method of neutron skyshine was proposed and was verified by comparison with existing methods. The effective dose of secondary neutrons and photons at the locations that was far away from high-energy electron accelerator was calculated using FLUKA and PHITS Monte Carlo code. The transport paths of secondary radiations to reach a long distance were classified as skyshine, direct, groundshine and multiple-shine. The contribution of each classified component to the total effective dose was evaluated. The neutrons produced from the thick copper target irradiated by 10 GeV electron beam was applied as a source term of this transport. In order to evaluate a groundshine effect, the composition of soil on the PAL-XFEL site was considered. At a relatively short distance less than 50 m from the accelerator tunnel, the direct and groundshine components mostly contributed to the total effective dose. The skyshine component was important at a long distance. The evaluated dose of neutron skyshine agreed better with the results using Rindi's formula, which was based on the experimental results at high energy electron accelerator. That also agreed with the estimated dose using the simple evaluation code, SHINE3, within about 20%. The total effective dose, including all components, was 10 times larger than the estimated doses using other methods for this comparison. The influence of multiple-shine path in this evaluation of the estimation method was investigated to be bigger than one of pure skyshine path.

  • Background: Reactor pressure vessel (RV) with internals (RVI) are activated structures by neutron irradiation and volume contaminated wastes. Thus, to develop safe and optimized disposal plan for them at a disposal site, it is important to perform exact activation calculation and evaluate the dose rate on the surface of casks which contain cut-off pieces. Materials and Methods: RV and RVI are subjected to neutron activation calculation via Monte Carlo methodology with MCNP6 and ORIGEN-S program-neutron flux, isotopic specific activity, and gamma spectrum calculation on each component of RV and RVI, and dose rate evaluation with MCNP6. Results and Discussion: Through neutron activation analysis, dose rate is evaluated for the casks containing cut-off pieces produced from decommissioned RV and RVI. For RV cut-off ones, the highest value of dose rate on the surface of cask is 6.97 × 10-1 mSv/hr and 2 m from it is 3.03 × 10-2 mSv/hr. For RVI cut-off ones, on the surface of it is 0.166 × 10-1 mSv/hr and 2 m from it is 1.04 × 10-1 mSv/hr. Dose rates for various RV and RVI cut-off pieces distributed lower than the limit except the one of 2 m from the cask surface of RVI. It needs to adjust contents in cask which carries highly radioactive components in order to decrease thickness of cask. Conclusion: Two types of casks are considered in this paper: box type for very-low-level waste (VLLW) as well as low-level waste (LLW) and cylinder type for intermediate-level waste (ILW). The results will contribute to the development of optimal loading plans for RV and RVI cut-off pieces during the decommissioning of nuclear power plant that can be used to prepare radioactive waste disposal plans for the different types of wastes-ILW, LLW, and VLLW.

  • Recently, high energy photon radiotherapy is a growing trend for increasing therapy results. Commonly, if you use high energy photons above 6~8 MeV nominal accelerator voltage, It lead the photo-nuclear reaction and the generation of photo-neutron are accompanied and these problematic factors are issued in the view of radiation protection. Therefore, in this study analyzed for dose distribution of photo-neutron in radiotherapy room based on MCNPX. As a result, absorbed dose is increased sharply from 10 MV to 12 MV. It was founded that the rapid increasement of photoneutron fluence was related to the absorbed dose at above 10 MV. Also, in case of the recommendation of ICRP 103, the outcome of an exchanged equivalent dose which based on calculated an absorbed dose, showed lower equivalent dose than ICRP 60 by reflecting the contribution of secondary photon for absorbed dose of human body in the low energy band.

  • Series of experiments were conducted to determine lethal does of X-ray and Neutron on Toxoplasma gondii. strain RH and IRI. As well morphological changes of Toxoplasma gondii irradiated or not were compared by use of electron microscope. The pathogenicity test of the irradiated and nonirradiated Toxoplasma gondii was made in mice guinea-pigs, rabbits and pigs: The letahl dose of X-ray and Neutron on RH and IRI strain and the growth rate between two strains after irradiation were shown little differences. Morphological changes were not observed until 18th passage was made. After then, the growth rate was decreased apparently, and atrophied forms were frequently observed in electron microscope. Survival time of animals inoculated with irradiated strain was longer than that of animals giving non-irradiated strain, and Toxoplasma gondii were isolated from all the dead animals. But it is of interest that pigs survived after injection of Toxoplasma gondii remained health and much attempts were failed toisolate Toxplasma gondii remained health and much attempts were slaughtered them. Animals were succumbed after injection of Toxoplasma gondii without any relationship with serum titers. (HA antibody).

  • The plasmid was used pBR 322 and ${\varphi}X174$ RF DNA. In neutron experiment, damage of pBR 322 and ${\varphi}X174$ RF DNA were observed according to increasing concentration of BSH and neutron dose. Damage of plasmid DNA appeared obvious by increasing of BSH and neutron irradiation. In ${\gamma}-$ radiation experiment, it was carried out like above neutron experiment but damages of two plasmid appeared no differences from the control unlike neutron result.

  • KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) is conducting research and development of large-scale radiation generators and the latest radiation measuring instruments. In particular, research and development of security screening equipment using an electron beam accelerator and a neutron generator is in progress recently. Globally, 20 ft containers are used to transport imports and exports, and electron beam accelerators are radiation sources to measure the shape of the material inside the container during customs inspections in each country. KAERI is developing a device that can use an electron beam accelerator and a neutron generator sequentially to grasp the shape of various materials as well as the location of the internal target material. In this study, when using the neutron generator, the radiation dose and the degree of activation by neutron for the facility and surrounding environment, facility equipment were simulated using MCNP and FISPACT code. As a result, the shielding structures inside and outside the radiation control area were satisfactory to the reference level established conservatively based on the Korean Nuclear Act.

  • A suggestion has been made for neutron dosimetric techniques using activation and threshold detectors in criticality accidents. Neutron dosimetrical parameters, namely, the fission spectrum-averaged cross-sections of some threshold reactions and fluence-to-dose conversion factors have been calculated by the use of an electronic computer. It appears that detectors having comparatively high threshold energy give more fine information on spectral deformation in criticality accidents, while detectors with low threshold energy are of usefulness for measuring fast neutron fluence regardless of fissioning types. Unexpectedly it is found that the fission spectrum-averaged cross sections of the $^{32}S(n,\;p)^{32}P$ reaction is not sensitive to analytical forms of fission neutron spectrum: the modified Cran-berg and Maxwellian forms. In addition, the fluence-to-dose conversion factors seem to be insensitive to both spectral functions and fissioning types.

  • Effects of heating time and radiation under high temperature on the properties of thermal, mechanical and shielding ability of modified (KNS-101), hydrogenated bisphenol-A(KNS-201) type epoxy resin and phenol-novolac(KNS-301) type epoxy resin based neutron shielding materials that are used for shipping casks for radioactive material have been investigated. At early stages, the offset temperatures of KNS-101, KNS-201 and KNS-301 increased with the heating time under high temperature, but it was rarely affected by the heating time in the later stages. In addition, the thermal conductivities of KNS-101 and KNS-201 decreased with heating time, but that of KNS-301 increased with the heating time. On the contrary, the thermal expansion coefficients of neutron shielding materials decreased with heating time. At the high temperature, the tensile strength and flexural strength of the shielding materials decreased with heating time. At the high temperature, the tensile strength and flexural strength of the shielding materials of KNS-101 and KNS-301 increased with heating time, but those of KNS-201 decreased with heating time. The shielding ability of neutron shielding materials slightly increased with the radiation dose, and shielding abilities of shielding materials of KNS-101 and KNS-201 were affected to a more extent than that of KNS-301 by radiation dose under high temperature.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cancer incidence rate and provide basic data by measuring the photoneutron dose generated during intensity-modulated radiation therapy and volumetric modulated arc therapy used in radiation therapy for prostate cancer. The optically stimulated luminescence albedo neutron dosimeter for neutron measurement was placed on the Rando phantom in the abdomen and thyroid and photoneutron dose generated was measured. As a result of the study, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (7 portal) was measured to be higher than volumetric rotational radiation therapy in both abdominal and thyroid locations. When the cancer incidence rate was evaluated using the nominal risk coefficient of ICRP 103, the cancer incidence rate due to exposure to the colon and thyroid during intensity-modulated radiation therapy was 9.9 per 1,000 people, and volumetric rotational radiation therapy for 1,000 people. It was 3.5 per person. Based on the principle of ALARA (As low as reasonably archievable), it is considered to be a guideline for minimizing the exposure dose to normal organs in the establishment of a radiation treatment plan.
