The conducting current of non-uniform plasma immersed electrode consists of ion current and secondary electron emission current caused by the impinging ion current. The ion current is determined by the ion dose passing through the sheath in front of electrode and the ion distribution in front of the electrode plays an important role in the secondary electron emission. The investigation of the distributed plasma and secondary electron effect on electrode ion current was carried out as the stainless steel electrode plugged with quartz tube was immersed in the inductively coupled Ar plasma using the antenna powered by 1 kw and the density profile was measured. After that, the negative voltage was applied by 1 kV~6 kV to measure the conduction current for the analysis of ion current.
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) lims were deposited by using end hall type ion gun. Benzene gas was used for the generation of carbon ions. In order to systematically control the ion energy, we applied to the substrate DC, pulsed DC or 250 kHz medium frequency bias voltage, DLC films of superior mechanical properties of hardness 39$\pm$4 GPa and elastic mudulus 290$\pm$50GPa (2 to 6 times better than those of the films deposited by plasma assisted CVD method) could be obtained. Deposition rate was much higher than when using Kaufman type ion source, which results from higher ion beam current of end hall type ion gun. The mechanical properties and atomic bond structure were independent of the bias voltage type ion gun. The mechanical properties and atomic bond structure were independent of the bias voltage type but intimately related with the magnitude of the bias voltage. With increasing the negative bias voltage, the structure of the films changed to graphitic one resulting in decreased content of three dimensional inter-links. Degradation of the mechanical properties with increasing bias voltage could be thus understood in terms of the content odf three dimensional inter-links.
In plasma source ion implantation, the target is immersed in the plasma and repetitively biased by negative high voltage pulses to implant the extracted ions from plasma into the surface of the target material. In this way, the problems of line-of-sight implantation in ion-beam ion implantation technique can be effectively solved. In addition, the high dose rate and simplicity of the equipment enable the ion implantation a commercially affordable process. In this work, plasma source ion implantation technique was used to improve the wear resistance of Co-cemented WC. which has been extensively used for high speed tools. Nitrogen and carbon ions were implanted using the pulse bias of -602kV, 25 sec and at various implantation conditions. The implanted samples were examined using scanning Auger electron spectroscopy and XPS to investigate the depth distributions of implanted ions and to reveal the chemical state change due to the ion implantation. The implanted ions were found to have penetrated to the depth of 3000$\AA$. The wear resistance of the implanted samples was measured using pin-on-disc wear tester and the wear tracks were examined with alpha-step profilometer.

The oxygen and nitrogen enriched activated carbons were obtained from modification of commercial activated carbon by using nitric acid, sodium hydroxide and urea. Zeta-potentials of modified activated carbons were investigated in relation to copper ion adsorption. The structural properties of modified activated carbons were not so much changed, but the zeta-potentials and isoelectric points were considerably changed. The zeta-potential of nitric acid modified activated carbon was the most negative than other activated carbons in the entire pH region, and the $pH_{IEP}$ was shifted from pH 4.8 to 2.6, resulted in the largest copper ion adsorption capacities compare with other activated carbons in the range of pH 3~6.5. In case of urea modified activated carbon, copper ion adsorption was larger than that of the as-received activated carbon from pH 2 to pH 6.5 even though the $pH_{IEP}$ was shifted to pH 6.0, it was due to the coordination process operated between nitrogen functional groups and copper ion. The adsorption capacity of copper ion was much influenced by zeta-potential and $pH_{IEP}$ of carbon adsorbent.
In the present study, a simple corona-wire charger for unipolar diffusion charging of aerosol particles is designed, constructed, and characterized. Experimental characterizations of the electrostatic discharge in terms of current-voltage relationships of positive and negative coronas of the corona-wire charger are also presented and discussed. The charging current and ion concentration in the charging zone increased monotonically with corona voltage. The negative corona showed higher current than the positive corona. At the same corona voltages, the current in the discharge zone is about 600 times larger than the charging current. The ion number concentrations ranged within approximately $5.0{\times}10^{10}$ to $1.24{\times}10^{16}$ and $4.5{\times}10^{12}$ to $2{\times}10^{16}$ ions/$m^3$ in the discharge and charging zones, respectively. A numerical model is used to predict the behavior of the electric potential lines. Numerical results of ion penetration through the inner electrode are in good agreement with the experimental results.
Tin and Tinoxide nanoparticles were prepared by arc-discharge nanopowder process. The negative electrode were fabricated using Tin and Tinoxide nanopower. The microstructure and electrochemistry properties were investigated and compared between Tin and Tinoxide. The oxidation film has microstructure of core/shell type and the shell which was attached around Tin nanoparticle consisted of amorphous $SnO_2$. The shape of Tinoxide nanoparticles was formed with irregular shape in comparison with Tin particle. Initial discharge capcity of Tinoxide electrode possesed about 1000mAh/g, which is about 320mAh/g higher than Tin electrode. Irreversible capacity of Tin electrode is much higher than Tinoxide. The cycle performance of Tinoxide electrode was indicated that is batter than Tin. The Tin negative electrode lost most of capacity after 4 cycle but Tinoxide electrode still retained the capacity. The Tinoxide does show some promise as Li-ion battery anode due to their large reversible capacity at low potentials.
Since it was proposed that vanadate may be an ‘ideal endogenous regulator of the $Na^+,\;K^+-ATPase$ activity (Cantley et at, 1979), vanadate has been a subject of intensive research and a variety of its physiological effects have been described (Nechay, 1984). In isolated guinea pig heart muscle vanadate shows a positive inotropic effect on ventricular muscle, while it induces a negative inotropic effect on atrial muscle. But its underlying mechanism has not been elucidated so far. Therefore, in this study the flux rates of calcium ion into and from guinea pig heart muscle were measured to throw some light on the underlying mechanism, because those rates have been known to be closely related to the cardiac contractility and the results are summarized as follows: 1) Calcium efflux rates from the intracellular $Ca^{++}$ pool (compartment 4) of both guinea pig left atrium and right ventricle were significantly reduced by vanadate and their pool sizes were significantly increased by vanadate. 2) The magnitude of calcium influx into left atrium was reduced by vanadate, While the magnitude of calcium influx into right ventricle was not affected by vanadate. From these results, it may be concluded that the positive inotropic effect of vanadate on the ventricular muscle was due to a reduced efflux rate of calcium ion and its negative inotropic effect on atrial muscle was resulted from a reduced influx of calcium ion.
The structures of molecular species of galactolipids, such as monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG) and digalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG), isolated from wheat flour have been investigated using negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry interfaced with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). According to the result of HPLC analysis, MGDG and DGDG were found to consist of mixtures of five and four molecular species, respectively. The galactolipids have been also analyzed to determine their fatty acid compositions, using HPLC/ESI-MS combined with in-source (or cone voltage) fragmentation. HPLC/ ESI-MS is very useful for one-step analysis of mixtures of galactolipids with a small sample quantity. Especially, the carboxylate anions produced in in-source fragmentations of the negative-ion of each component separated by HPLC provide valuable information on the composition of its fatty acyl chains.
In this work, soft carbons produced by pyrolysis of petroleum and coal-tar pitch were used as the negative electrode for Li-ion batteries. We studeid the charge/discharge capacity and the interfacial reaction of these electrodes by constructing a half cell. Charge/discharge property was studied by a constant-current step and the interfacial reaction between the electrolyte and the surface of a carbon electrode was studied by the cyclic voltammetry. The initial charge/discharge capacity for the coal-tar pitch carbon increased exceedingly with the heat treatment temperature. On hte other hand, the capacity of the petroleum pitch carbon increased with temperature up to 1000$^{\circ}C$, thereafter decreased continuously. While the charge capacity decreased with the cycle number, the reversibility increased above 90%. In addition, the thermal stability and crystallization of petroleum and coal-tar pitches were analyzed by TGA and XRD, respectively.
