The optimum condition for the extraction of antimicrobial substance from Lithospermi radix was investigated. For the purpose of obtaining basic data for the development of natural preservatives and for the prevention of food poisoning accidents, its antimicrobial activity was tested against several kinds of saprophytic microbes and food poisoning bacteria. The optimum condition for extraction of antimicrobial substance was to steep Lithospermi radix into 95% ethanol for 24 hours at room temperature. Antimicrobial activity was observed at the pH range $5.0{\sim}8.0$, but its activity became stronger at acidic condition. The result of ion exchange chromatography was showed that the antimicrobial activity of anionic portion was more apparent than that of cationic portion. The antimicrobial activity against Gram positive bacteria was stronger than that of Gram negative bacteria and the growth of food poisoning bacteria such as S. aureus and V. parahaemolyticus was inhibited in the concentration of 0.1% for 48 hours. As for mold and yeast, the growth of some kinds of these organisms was inhibited in the concentration of 0.1 % for 48 hours and the growth of nearly all the fungi was inhibited in the concentration of 0.15% for 96 hours.

In order to understand the nature of dendritic zinc growth, electrochemical zinc redox reaction on nickel plate was investigated in aqueous solutions containing different concentrations, 0.2, 0.1 and 0.02 $mol{\cdot}dm^{-3}$ (M), of zinc sulfate ($ZnSO_4$) or zinc chloride ($ZnCl_2$). Zinc ion was efficiently reduced and oxidized on nickel in the high-concentration (0.2 M) solution, whereas relatively poor efficiency was obtained from the other low-concentration solutions (0,1 and 0.02 M). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis revealed that the 0.2 M electrolyte solution decomposes at more positive potentials than the 0.1 and the 0.02 M solutions. These results suggested that the concentration of electrolyte solution and anion would be an important factor that suppresses the reaction of the zinc dendrite formation. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) data revealed that the shape of dendritic zinc and its growing behavior were also influenced by electrolyte concentration.

The SS-epm(N,N '-bis-[2(S)-pyrrolidinylmethyl]ethane-1,2-diamine) ligand having stereospecificity has been prepared and reacted with $CoCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ or trans-$[Co(pyridine)_4Cl_2]Cl.$ The resultants are green crystals, both of which are identified to be trans-$[Co(SS-epm)Cl_2]_2(COCl_4)$ by elemental analysis and absorption spectra. CD spectrum of trans complex shows negative (-) cotton effect at long wavelength due to the vicinal effect of the stereospecifically chelated ligands. The conformation of SS-epm in trans complex is ${\delta}{\lambda}{\delta}$(SRRS) for each of the five membered chelated ring. $Co(II)Cl_4^{2-}$ as counter ion plays an importance role in the ionic association of the formation of trans complex with SS-epm. Furthermore, according to orientation of secondary amine, total strain energy on each isomers was calculated by molecular mechanics (MM) to verify structural characterization and spectral data.
p-Phenylenediamine was tetrazotized with sodium nitrite in an excess amount of concentrated hydrochloric acid media at -10$^{\circ}$C. It was also tetrazotized almost completely in 45% perchloric acid media. The two diazo groups in the tetrazonium salt were substituted by halogen, and the degree of tetrazotization reaction was observed by dihalobenzene yielded. The result of the tetrazotization was dependent upon the stability of the tetrazonium salt, and the stability was determined by concentration and quantity of the acid media. In dilute acid media the tetrazonium salt was unstable and completely decomposed. In concentrated acid media, though the tetrazonium salt was stable, tetrazotization reaction was retarded. To harmonize the two opposing tendencies it was advisable to find the optimum acidity of media at which the salt was fairly stable. About $40{\sim}45$% of the acid media was suitable. The fact that the $H^+$ ion behaved as a negative catalyst supported the assumption that the diazotization reaction is primarily a reaction between the free amine and a nitroso group. The reaction of tetrazotization is expressed with respect to the kinetics and mechanism of diazotization.
Mono-oxo-bridged binuclear molybdenum(V) complex, $[Mo_2O_3(Phen)_2(NCS)_4]$ produces di-oxo-bridged binuclear molybdenum(V) complex, $[Mo_2O_4(Phen)_2(NCS)_2]$ in water + co-solvent, where the co-solvent are acetone, acetonitrile and N,N-dimethylformamide. The rate of conversion of $[Mo_2O_3(Phen)_2(NCS)_4]\;into\;[Mo_2O_4(Phen)_2(NCS)_2]$ has been measured by spectrophotometric method. Temperature was $10^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ and pressure was varied up to 1500 bar. The rate constants are increased with increasing water mole fraction and decreased with increasing concentration of hydrogen ion. The order of oxygen ring formation reaction rate in various cosolvent is as follows, ACT > AN > DMF which is agreed with solvent dielectric constants. The observed negative activation entropy ($[\Delta}S^{\neq}$), activation volume($[\Delta}V^{\neq}$) and activation compressibility coefficient(${\Delta}{\beta}^{\neq}$) values show that the solvent water molecule is strongly attracted to the complex at transition state. From these results, the oxygen ring formation reaction of $[Mo_2O_3(Phen)_2(NCS)_4]$ is believed association mechanism.
Voltammetric behavior of alkylammonium ion was studied in the absence and in the presence of crown ether in propylene carbonate as solvent. The peak potentials and the peak currents, their dependency on the concentrations, the reversibility of the electrode reactions are described. In the presence of crown ether chemical reaction might be preceeded before the electron-transfer process, the peak potential for the reduction shifts at the negative direction as the concentration of crown ether to the electrolyte solution increases. The addition of crown ether(20mM 18CR6)to the electrolyte solution made it possible to determine voltammetrically the dialkylammonium ions($Me_2NH^{+}_{2};O.6{\sim}0.8mM$) in the presence of the monoalkylammonium ions ($EtNH^{+}_{3} ;1.6mM$) and the monoalkylammonium ions ($EtNH^{+}_{3} ; 0.5{\sim}2.5mM$) in the presence of the dialkylammonium ions($Me_2NH^{+}_{2};0.5mM$)
Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) are halogenated aromatic compounds with the empirical formula $C_{12}$$H_{10-n}$C $l_{n}$(n=1~10), and are a mixture of possible 209 different chlorinated congeners. PCBs were widely used as dielectric fluids for capacitors and transformers, plasticizers, lubricant inks and paint addirives. Once released into the environment, PCBs persist for years because they are so resistant to degradation. In addition to their persistence in the environment, PCBs in ecological food chains undergo biomagnification because of their high degree of lipophilicity. In 1970s, the worldwide production of PCBs was ceased and the import of PCBs was prohibited since 1983 in Korea. In spite of these actions, many PCBs seems to be still in use. The environmental load of PCBs will continue to be recycled through air, land, water, and the biosphere for decades to come. This study was conducted to measure the concentrations of PCBs in the serum samples of 112 women by GC/MSD and GC/ECD. The main results of this study were as follows. 1. PCBs were detected in all samples. The mean $\pm$SD levels of PCBs in the serum were 3.613$\pm$0.759 ppb, and median were 3.828 ppb. 2. The correlation coefficients of the concentrations of 13 PCB congeners were from minimum, 0.7913 to maximum, 0.9985, and all was significant(p=0.0001). The correlation coefficient between the concentrations of PCBs and p,p'-DDE was 0.9641(p=0.0001). 3. There was a positive association between age and PCBs' concentrations (simple linear regression ; $R^2$=0.86, $\beta$=0.08023, p<0.001). 4. There was a positive association between total lipids in the serum and PCBs' concentrations (simple linear regression ; $R^2$=0.7058, $\beta$=0.00486, p<0.001). 5. For possible predictors of PCBs and p,p' -DDE levels in the serum, age adjusted model (Y=$\beta$$_{0}$+$\beta$$_1$age+ $B_2$X) was applied. For BMI, major residential area, wether to eat caught fish by angling, where to eat caught fish by angling(by parents in the past), fish consumption, meat consumption, meat consumption, and dairy consumption, there was no association. For total conception frequency and lactation frequency and lactation period, there was negative association.ion.
Soils and rice plants subject to smoke from the Jang-hang Smelter were samples at two depths to assess the nature and extend of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn contamination, particularly with respect to distance from pollution source. Soils at east site within 1km of the center of the smelter were highly contaminated with Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Metal levels in the smoke-polluted area were higher in surface soil than in subsurface soil, and decreased rapidly with distance reaching nearly background levels at 5km from pollution source. A position correlation was found between contents of total and 0.1 N HCl-extractable, or 1.0N $CH_3COONH_4$- extractable heavy metals in surface soils of pollution. Contents of heavy metals in soils were positively correlated with soil organic matter and cation exchange capacity. The contents of heavy metals in brown rice collected from the paddy field around the Jang-hang Smelter were in the range of 0.23-1.33 ppm for Cd, 2.39-6.25 for Cu, 0.95-8.32 ppm for Pb and 14.60-27.31 for Zn. The contents of Cd, Cu, and Zn in rice straw were positively correlated with those in the brown rice. Negative correlation was found between the contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in brown rice and the distance from the source.

In this study, high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was employed to detect 26 antidiabetic compounds in adulterated dietary supplements using a simple, selective method. The work presented herein may help prevent incidents related to food adulteration and restrict the illegal food market. The best separation was obtained on a Shiseido Capcell Pak(R) C18 MG-II ($2.0mm{\times}100mm$, $3{\mu}m$), which improved the peak shape and MS detection sensitivity of the target compounds. A gradient elution system composed of 0.1 % (v/v) formic acid in distilled water and methanol at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min for 18 min was utilized. A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with an electrospray ionization source operated in the positive or negative mode was employed as the detector. The developed method was validated as follows: specificity was confirmed in the multiple reaction monitoring mode using the precursor and product ion pairs. For solid samples, LOD ranged from 0.16 to 20.00 ng/mL and LOQ ranged from 0.50 to 60.00 ng/mL, and for liquid samples, LOD ranged from 0.16 to 20.00 ng/mL and LOQ ranged from 0.50 to 60.00 ng/mL. Satisfactory linearity was obtained from calibration curves, with $R^2$ > 0.99. Both intra and inter-day precision were less than 13.19 %. Accuracies ranged from 80.69 to 118.81 % (intra/inter-day), with a stability of less than 14.88 %. Mean recovery was found to be 80.6-119.0 % and less than 13.4 % RSD. Using the validated method, glibenclamide and pioglitazone were simultaneously determined in one capsule at concentrations of 1.52 and 0.53 mg (per capsule), respectively.

La0.7-xCexSr0.3MnO3 specimens were fabricated by a solid state reaction method and structural and electrical properties with variation of Ce4+ contents were measured. All specimens exhibited a polycrystalline rhombohedral crystal structure, and the (110) peaks were shifted to low angle side with increasing the amount of Ce4+ contents. As Ce4+ ions with different ion radii and charges are substituted with La3+ ions, electrical properties are thought to be affected by changes in the double exchange interaction between Mn3+-Mn4+ ions due to distortion of the unit lattice, a decrease in oxygen vacancy concentration, and an increase in lattice defects. Resistivity gradually decrease as the amount of Ce4+ added increased, and negative temperature coefficient of resistance (NTCR) properties were shown in all specimens. In the La0.5Ce0.2Sr0.3MnO3 specimens, electrical resistivity, TCR and B-value were 31.8 Ω-cm, 0.55%/℃ and 605 K, respectively.
