A new needle-based device for headspace wire coated in-needle microextraction (HS-WC-INME) was fabricated using a nichrome wire coated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) mixture. The proposed needle device was applied for the determination of volatile compounds in lavender and lavandin essential oils by gas chromatography. Fundamental parameters such as needle design, conditions of extraction and desorption were optimized along with the validation of the extraction and desorption efficiency. The optimal conditions were 30 min extraction at $50^{\circ}C$ and 2 min desorption at $240^{\circ}C$. The calibration curves showed good linearity with the suitable values of the coefficients of determination ($r^2$) greater than 0.99. The limits of detection for linalyl acetate, ${\beta}$-caryophyllene, linalool and (+)-limonene were 7.15, 9.04, 10.79 and 22.26 ng, respectively. Analytical recoveries were acceptable in the test samples, varying from 86.7% to 108.0%. The values of relative standard deviations for run to run showed range less than 0.9% while 3.9% through 7.2% for needle to needle. The proposed PEG-PDMS coating could be more suitable than PDMS coating to extract particular polar groups such as alcohols.
There appears lateral capillary force in a hydrophilic flat needle employed for the fabrication of fine organic thin-film stripes, bringing in an increase of the stripe width. It also causes the stripe thickness to increase with increasing coating speed, which is hardly observed in a normal coating process. Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, we demonstrate that the lateral capillary flow can be substantially suppressed by increasing the contact angle of the needle end. Based on the simulation results, we have coated the outer surface of the flat needle with a hydrophobic material (polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) with the water contact angle of 104°). Using such a hydrophobic needle, we can suppress the lateral capillary flow of an aqueous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) to a great extent, rendering the stripe narrow (63 ㎛ at 30 mm/s). Consequently, the stripe thickness is decreased as the coating speed increases. To demonstrate its applicability to solution-processable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), we have also fabricated OLED with the fine PEDOT: PSS stripe and observed the strong light-emitting stripe with the width of about 68 ㎛.
Objectives: This study aims to examine the improvement against facial wrinkles after needle-embedding therapy. Methods: The study participants were 10 women treated with needle-embedding therapy in the Korean Medical Clinic from September, 2011 to August, 2014. The subjects were treated every ten days for twenty days, totally three times, and the result of treatment was evaluated five times, such as pre-treatment, after each treatments, one month and two months later of the last treatment with ARAMO-SG. Results: 1. Depth and range of facial wrinkles, facial skin pore test, and sensitivity test were visibly improved after needle-embedding therapy and follow-up compared pre-treatment (p<0.05). 2. The significant improvements in facial skin texture test was not observed and sustained until the follow-up measurement at 2 months. 3. Any adverse reaction related to needle-embedding therapy did not happen. Conclusions: This study suggests that needle-embedding therapy can improve facial wrinkles. The positive results of this study support the requirement for additional research investigating the efficacy of needle-embedding therapy in women.
This study examined the effect of pine needle distillate (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc) on the immune system and hematological parameters. C57BL/6 male mice weighing 20 ~21 g were divided into 3 groups and intraperitonially injected with either 200 $\mu$L of saline (control), 50% diluted (P50) or 100% pine needle distillate (P100) once a day for 24 days. At the end of the experiment, the mice were anesthetized by ether and peripheral blood was collected from the femoral artery and the spleen was excised. Spleen weight decreased significantly (p<0.001) in the pine needle groups compared to the control group. The blood was used for a complete blood count and flow cytometrical analysis after immunofluorescence staining. The pine needle distillate dose-dependently decreased the CD4$^{+}$/CD8 sup +/ ratio (p <0.05), and showed a tendency to increase the mean FSC (forward scatter) values of the CD8$^{+}$T cells, while decrease the values of the CD4$^{+}$T cells. There were no significant differences in WBC, RBC and platelet counts among the three groups, but hemoglobin and hemoglobin-related parameters and platelet volume increased and red blood cell volumes decreased with the administration of the pine needle distillate. These results suggest that the pine needle distillate may have immunosuppressive effects.
Through this study, we investigate the effects of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technology on the fatigue life of needle roller bearings. The fatigue life of untreated and UNSM-treated needle roller bearings is evaluated using a roller fatigue tester at various contact stress levels under oil-lubricated conditions. We can ascertain that the fatigue life of an UNSM-treated needle roller bearing was extended by approximately 34.3% in comparison with an untreated one, where the effectiveness of UNSM technology diminishes with increasing contact stress. The surface roughness and surface hardness of needle roller bearings before and after being treated by UNSM technology are compared and discussed to understand the role of UNSM technology in improving the fatigue life of needle roller bearings. In addition, a fractograph of the damaged bearings is observed using a scanning electron microscopy to shed light on the fracture mechanisms of bearings under different contact stress levels. We can therefore conclude that the application of UNSM technology to the needle roller bearings improves the fatigue life by reducing the friction coefficient and increasing the wear resistance; this may be attributed to a reduction in surface roughness from 0.5 to $0.149{\mu}m$ and an increase in surface hardness from 58 to 62 HRc.
Objectives: Quantification, objectification, and standardization of lifting-thrusting manipulation are important issues in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The purpose of this study was to quantitatively investigate the difference in the amount of stimulation according to range and frequency among parameters of lifting-thrusting manipulation with the use of a needle insertion-measurement system. Methods: For quantification of lifting-thrusting manipulation, an acupuncture needle insertion-measurement system was used in phantom tissue. The motor and force sensors of the needle insertion device were connected to the control software. This enabled operation of the lifting-thrusting manipulation and measurement of the acupuncture needle force. The measurement of the acupuncture needle force according to various frequencies (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1 Hz) and ranges of movement (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm) was repeated 10 times. Results: At a constant frequency of movement, acupuncture needle force according to range of movement (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm) increased with increasing range of movement (p < 0.05). At a constant range of movement, acupuncture needle force according to frequency of movement (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 Hz) increased with increasing frequency of movement (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In this study, we conducted a quantitative comparison of the amount of stimulation according to range and frequency, the main parameters of lifting-thrusting manipulation, by using an acupuncture needle insertion-measurement system. Future studies on various manipulations and parameters are warranted to quantify and objectify the amounts of stimulation by acupuncture manipulation.

Celiac plexus block is performed to relieve intractable upper abdominal cancer pain. Generally, celiac plexus blocks have been performed under control of X-ray fluoroscopy to determine the position of the needle tip and the spread of contrast media. During the period from March 1992 to February 1994, we have performed 21 cases of neurolytic celiac plexus block to alleviate pain of intra-abdominal malignancy. We retrospectively evaluated the location of the needle tip and the spread of contrast media. P-A views of simple abdomen demonstrated the locations of the needle tip: 66.7% of the left needle tips were in upper 3/1 of L1 (6 cases) and $T_{12}-L_1$ interspace (8 cases), 50% of the right needle tips were in upper 1/3 of $L_1$, (6 cases) and $T_{12}-L_1$ interspace (4 cases). Contrast media from the right needle spread upward to middle 1/3 of $T_{10}$ (5 cases) and middle 1/3 of $T_{11}$ (5 cases), downward to middle 1/3 of $L_1$ (6 cases) and lower 1/3 of $L_1$ (3 cases). Contrast media from the left needle were spread upward to middle 1/3 of $T_{10}$ (5 cases) and evenly to other spaces, downward to middle 1/3 of $L_1$, (4 cases) and $L_1-L_2$ interspace (6 cases). We analyze the spread of contrast media according to distance from needle tip by authors score system. Contrast media of right needle spread upward 6.1 and downward 3.4, that of left needle spread upward 6.5 and downward 3.7.
This study was carried out to investigate spectral characterisistics and chlorophyll contents of Pinus koraiensis needles in Gwangju-gun, Kyunggi-do. In spectrum analysis by each age, needle showed difference on 700∼1,100 nm(NIR : near infrared ray). Light reflexibility keeps constant between 1st year needle and 3rd year needle, current year needle's value was higher than others and that was higher for 400∼500 nm and 600∼700 nm at 550 nm. Transmission to needle's age showed the highest result in current year needle. It showed in order of current, 1st, 2nd and 3rd year needle at 550 nm and 750 nm. Especially, current year needles of Pinus koraiensis showed a tendency to change transmission coefficient in NIR. The result of transmission coefficient measurement by each position of slope showed in order of middle slope, upper slope and lower slope. But the gathered needle in middle slope made marked change at NIR. Chlorophyll a content of the upper slope's needles was higher than other 4 positions but a component ratio was lower. In needle of the oppressed tree, Chlorophyll a content was rather low than others. Chlorophyll a content by slope positions, the upper slope's needle showed a highest value(4.48 mg/g) and lower slope was lowest value(1.35 mg/g). Chlorophyll b content also showed a similar tendency to chlorophyll a and chlorophyll(a+b) contents.
