  • Based on plastic instability, analytical prediction of bursting failure on tube hydroforming processes under combined internal pressure and independent axial feeding is carried out. Bursting is irrecoverable phenomenon due to local instability under excessive tensile stresses. In order to predict the bursting failure, three different classical necking criteria such as diffuse necking criterion for sheet and tube, local necking criterion for sheet are introduced. The incremental theory of plasticity fur anisotropic material is adopted and then the hydroforming limit and bursting failure diagram with respect to axial feeding and hydraulic pressure are presented. In addition, the influences of the material properties such as anisotropy parameter, strain hardening exponent on bursting pressure are investigated. As results of the above approach, the hydroforming limit in view of bursting failure is verified with experimental results.

  • Plastic instability in uniaxial tension of commercial purity Al has been studied with the emphasis of effects of thickness in cold worked specimens and recrystallized specimens. The thickness change gave rise to change in stress state and the amount of strain localization in specimen after diffuse necking. Therefore the thickness of speci- men could control modes of plastic instability. Regardless of recrystallized or cold worked state, the necking mode changed from diffuse necking to local necking, at about 1.5 .approx. 2 mm in thickness.

  • The past recent years have seen an increasing use of high-strength steel sheets in the automotive industry. However, the formability and damage prediction of these materials requires accurate acquisition of necking and fracture strains. Digital image correlation (DIC) is used to accurately capture the necking and fracture strains during testing. The fact that single time points of capturing vary with frame rate makes the need for an investigation necessary. For the high-strength steel DP980, the frame-rate dependences of the final necking and fracture strains values are analyzed here. To eliminate the influence of gauge length, the strains were measured locally by DIC. Results for three specimen shapes obtained with frame rates of 1 and 900 fps (frames per second) were considered and based on them, triaxiality failure diagrams (TFD) are established. It was observed that after diffuse necking, the deformation path departed from the initially linear one, and the stress triaxiality grew with ongoing deformation. It was further revealed that the frame rate-dependence of the necking strain was rather low (< 2%), whereas the fracture strain could be underestimated by up to 8% when the lower frame rate of 1 fps was used (compared with 900 fps). In this study, this issue is investigated while taking into consideration the three different triaxialities. These results demonstrate the importance of choosing an appropriate frame rate for the determination of necking and fracture strains in particular.

  • Glass fiber reinforced polymeric composites hold considerable promise for increased use in low cost high volume applications because of the potential for processing by solid phase forming. Unfortunately, because of the wide variety of such materials, inherent bariability in properties, and complex temperature and strain rate dependence, large strain behavior of these materials has not been well characterized. Of particular importance is failure during processing due to localized necking instability, and it is this phenomenon that is primary focus of this study. The strain rate and temperature dependence is used to predict limiting tensile strains, based on Mackinack imperfection theory. Excellent correlation was obtained between theory and experiment, and the results are summarized in the limit strains as a function of temperature and stain rate.

  • This paper reports the irradiation effect on the deformation behavior and tensile fracture properties of A533B RPV steel. An inverse identification technique using iterative finite element (FE) simulation was used to determine those properties from tensile data for the A533B RPV steel irradiated at 65 to $100^{\circ}C$ and deformed at room temperature. FE simulation revealed that the plastic instability at yield followed by softening for higher doses was related to the occurrence of localized necking immediately after yielding. The strain-hardening rate in the equivalent true stress-true strain relationship was still positive during the necking deformation. The tensile fracture stress was less dependent on the irradiation dose, whereas the tensile fracture strain and fracture energy decreased with increasing dose level up to 0.1 dpa and then became saturated. However, the tensile fracture strain and fracture energy still remained high after high-dose irradiation, which is associated with a large amount of ductility during the necking deformation for irradiated A533B RPV steel.

  • The development of filament stretching extensional rheometers over the past decade has enabled the systematic measurement of the transient extensional stress growth in dilute and semi-dilute polymer solutions. The strain-hardening in the extensional viscosity of dilute solutions overwhelms the perturbative effects of capillarity, inertia & gravity and the kinematics of the extensional deformation become increasingly homogeneous at large strains. This permits the development of a robust open-loop control algorithm for rapidly realizing a deformation with constant stretch history that is desired for extensional rheometry. For entangled fluids such as concentrated solutions and melts the situation is less well defined since the material functions are governed by the molecular weight between entanglements, and the fluids therefore show much less pronounced strain-hardening in transient elongation. We use experiments with semi-dilute/entangled and concentrated/entangled monodisperse polystyrene solutions coupled with time-dependent numerical computations using nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive equations such as the Giesekus model in order to show that an open-loop control strategy is still viable for such fluids. Multiple iterations using a successive substitution may be necessary, however, in order to obtain the true transient extensional viscosity material function. At large strains and high extension rates the extension of fluid filaments in both dilute and concentrated polymer solutions is limited by the onset of purely elastic instabilities which result in necking or peeling of the elongating column. The mode of instability is demonstrated to be a sensitive function of the magnitude of the strain-hardening in the fluid sample. In entangled solutions of linear polymers the observed transition from necking instability to peeling instability observed at high strain rates (of order of the reciprocal of the Rouse time for the fluid) is directly connected to the cross-over from a reptative mechanism of tube orientation to one of chain extension.

  • Low temperature irradiation can significantly harden metallic materials and often lead to strain localization and ductility loss in deformation. This paper provides a review on the radiation effects on the deformation of metallic materials, focusing on microscopic and macroscopic strain localization phenomena. The types of microscopic strain localization often observed in irradiated materials are dislocation channeling and deformation twinning, in which dislocation glides are evenly distributed and well confined in the narrow bands, usually a fraction of a micron wide. Dislocation channeling is a common strain localization mechanism observed virtually in all irradiated metallic materials with ductility, while deformation twinning is an alternative localization mechanism occurring only in low stacking fault energy(SFE) materials. In some high stacking fault energy materials where cross slip is easy, curved and widening channels can be formed depending on dose and stress state. Irradiation also prompts macroscopic strain localization (or plastic instability). It is shown that the plastic instability stress and true fracture stress are nearly independent of irradiation dose if there is no radiation-induced phase change or embrittlement. A newly proposed plastic Instability criterion is that the metals after irradiation show necking at yield when the yield stress exceeds the dose-independent plastic instability stress. There is no evident relationship between the microscopic and macroscopic strain localizations; which is explained by the long-range back-stress hardening. It is proposed that the microscopic strain localization is a generalized phenomenon occurring at high stress.

  • In this paper, the effect of grain refinement on room temperature ductility of copper was addressed. Recent experimental results have shown that this material, as well as a number of other single-phase metals that are ductile when coarse-grained, loose their ductility with decreasing grain size in the sub micrometer range. A recently developed model in which such materials are considered as effectively two-phase ones (with the grain boundaries treated as a linearly viscous second phase) was applied to analyze stability of Cu against ductile necking. As a basis, Hart's stability analysis that accounts for strain rate sensitivity effects was used. The results confirm the observed trend for reduction of ductility with decreasing grain size. The model can be applied to predicting the grain size dependence of ductility of other metallic materials as well.
