  • We present a test observation result of the KMTNet Intensive Nearby Southern Galaxy group Survey (KINGS). The KINGS is designed to study nearby galaxy groups (NGC 55, NGC 253, NGC 5128, and M83 groups), taking the advantage of the wide field coverage of the KMTNet. The main goal of the KINGS is to produce extensive catalogs of dwarf galaxies, ultra compact dwarfs (UCDs), and intraglobular clusters in the galaxy groups. We will also investigate the spatial distribution of intragroup light in each group. We present a progress report of the project based on the test BVI observations of two galaxy groups. We discuss the result from the test observation and possible improvement for future observations.

  • AKARI's all-sky survey resolves the far-infrared emission in many thousands of nearby galaxies, providing essential local benchmarks against which the evolution of high-redshift populations can be measured. This review presents some recent results in the resolved galaxy populations, covering some well-known nearby targets, as well as samples from major legacy surveys such as the Herschel Reference Survey and the JCMT Nearby Galaxies Survey. This review also discusses the prospects for higher redshifts surveys, including strong gravitational lens clusters and the AKARI NEP field.

  • Flow patterns in the presence of two identical nearby circular cylinders at Re=100 were numerically studied. We considered all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the inclination angle with respect to the direction of the main flow. Eight distinct flow patterns were identified based on vorticity contours and streamlines, which are Base-Bleed, Biased-Base-Bleed, Shear-Layer-Reattachment, Induced-Separation, Vortex-Impingement, Flip-Flopping, Modulated Periodic, and Synchronized-Vortex-Shedding. Collecting all the numerical results, we propose a general flow pattern diagram for flows past two nearby cylinders. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use this diagram to distinguish flow patterns in the presence of two identical circular cylinders arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

  • The source parameters of four earthquakes with magnitude larger than 4.0 nearby the offshore Sinan are analyzed. The waveform inversion method is used for analyzing the source parameters of two events (20 August 2012 and 21 April 2013) with C&B and AK135-c crustal velocity structure models. The source parameters of the other two events (26 July 1994 and 23 March 2003) are obtained from references. Focal mechanisms of the events are strike slip faulting or strike slip faulting with a thrust component. The directions of P-axes of the events are ENE-WSW or NE-SW which are similar to previous studies on P-axes in and around the Korean peninsula. With regard to the events nearby the offshore Sinan, the regional stress, rather than being local stress, is seen to be the result of the combination of tectonic forces from the compression of plates colliding to the Eurasian Plate.

  • For the reduction and efficient management of railway noise, first of all prediction of railway noise is necessarily requested, At home and abroad, many studies for prediction of railway nearby noise have been accomplished, But it is impossible to predict exactly for the Korean Railroad, because the acoustic power DB for each rolling stock used in Korea has not been builded yet. So in this study, acoustic power DB for each Korean rolling stock such as Samaeul, Mugungwha was builded according to the speed and rail support systems. Predicted results using accumulated acoustic power DB are compared with measured results and it is known that accumulated acoustic power DB can be used for more precise prediction of railway nearby noise.

  • We searched for X-ray emission from the 665 galaxies inside and towards the nearby voids by analyzing the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) data as well as the ROSAT pointed observations (PSPC). As a result we have detected six X-ray emitting galaxies. Two (UGC 10205 and NGC 7509) are in the high density region in the local void, three (UGC 749, MCG +11-10-073, and Mrk 464) are towards the nearby voids, and UGC 32 is located in the low density region. We carried out a timing analysis for both Mrk 464 and UGC 32, and a spectral analysis for Mrk 464. The light curve of Mrk 464 shows the possibility of periodic X-ray flux variation and UGC 32 shows weak, but rapid variation.

  • In case of a line-to-ground fault at transmission lines, a portion of fault current will flow into the earth through the footings of the faulted tower causing electrical potential rise nearby the faulted tower footings. In this situation, any buried pipelines or structures nearby the faulted tower can be exposed to the electrical stress by earth potential rise. Although many research works has been conducted on this phenomena, there has been no clear answer of the required separation distance between tower footings and neary buried pipeline because of its dependancy on the soil electrical charactersics of the concerned area and the faulted system. In this paper, an analytical formula to calculate the requried sepeartion distance from the faulted tower has been derived.

  • An understanding of the ultraviolet (UV) properties of nearby galaxies is essential for interpreting images of high redshift systems. In this respect, the prediction of optical-band morphologies at high redshifts requires UV images of local galaxies with various morphologies. We present the simulated optical images of galaxies at high redshifts using diverse and high-quality UV images of nearby galaxies obtained through the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). We measured CAS (concentration, asymmetry, clumpiness) as well as Gini/M20 parameters of galaxies at near-ultraviolet (NUV) and simulated optical images to quantify effects of redshift on the appearance of distant stellar systems. We also discuss the change of morphological parameters with redshift.

  • We present a new survey of nearby galaxies to obtain deep wide-field images of 200 nearby bright galaxies in the southern hemisphere using Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet). We are taking very deep and wide-field images, spending 4.5 hours for the B and R filters for each object. Using this dataset, we will look for diffuse, low-surface brightness structures including outer disks, truncated disks, tidal features and stellar streams, and faint companions. The multicolor data will enable us to estimate the incidence and star formation history of those features. We present an outline of the data reduction pipeline, and preliminary results from the commissioning data.

  • Ground movements during tunnelling have the potential for major impact on nearby buildings, utilities and streets. The impacts on buildings are assessed by linking the magnitude of ground loss at the source of ground loss around tunnel to the lateral and vertical displacements on the ground surface, and then to the lateral strain and angular distortion, and resulting damage in the building. To prevent or mitigate the impacts on nearby buildings, it is important to understand the whole mechanism from tunnelling to building damage. This paper discusses tunneling-induced ground movements and their impacts on nearby buildings, including the importance of the soil-structure interactions. In addition, a building damage criterion, which is based on the state of strain, is presented and discussed in detail and the overall damage assessment procedure is provided for the estimation of tunnelling-induced building damage considering the effect of soil-structure interaction.
