To proactively manage climate risk, near-term climate predictions on annual to decadal time scales are of great interest to various communities. This study evaluates the near-term climate prediction skills in East Asia with DePreSys4 retrospective decadal predictions. The model is initialized every November from 1960 to 2020, consisting of 61 initializations with ten ensemble members. The prediction skill is quantitatively evaluated using the deterministic and probabilistic metrics, particularly for annual mean near-surface temperature, land precipitation, and sea level pressure. The near-term climate predictions for May~September and November~March averages over the five years are also assessed. DePreSys4 successfully predicts the annual mean and the five-year mean near-surface temperatures in East Asia, as the long-term trend sourced from external radiative forcing is well reproduced. However, land precipitation predictions are statistically significant only in very limited sporadic regions. The sea level pressure predictions also show statistically significant skills only over the ocean due to the failure of predicting a long-term trend over the land.
Non-invasive blood glucose measurement from mouse tail was performed by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Three groups; normal, type I diabetes (insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, IDDM), type II diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM) group, were studied over a 10 weeks period with the collection of near-infrared (NIR) spectra. Spectral variations from long-term measurement (10 weeks) from dramatic and nonlinear changes in the optical properties of the live tissue sample were compensated by chemometrics techniques such as principle component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) regression. The effect from mouse body temperature changes on NIR spectral data was also considered. This study showed that the compensation of variations from long-term measurement and temperature changes improved calibration accuracy of non-invasive blood glucose measurement.
This study investigates the impacts of carbon neutrality and air quality control policies on near-term climate change in East Asia, by examining three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) scenarios from five climate models. Specifically, low carbon and strong air quality control scenario (SSP1-1.9), high carbon and weak air quality control scenario (SSP3-7.0), and high carbon and strong air quality control scenario (SSP3-7.0-lowNTCF) are compared. For these scenarios, the near-term climate (2045-2054 average) changes are evaluated for surface air temperature (SAT), hot temperature extreme intensity (TXx), and hot temperature extreme frequency (TX90p). In all three scenarios, SAT, TXx, and TX90p are projected to increase in East Asia, while carbon neutrality reduces the increasing rate of SAT and hot temperature extremes. Air quality control strengthens the warming rate. These opposed mitigation effects are robustly forced in all model simulations. Nonetheless, the impact of carbon neutrality overcomes the impact of air quality control. These results suggest that fast carbon neutrality, more effective than an air quality control policy, is necessary to slowdown future warming trend in East Asia.

Generation of precise, accurate, and robust calibration models for spectroscopic methods of analysis can be time-consuming, expensive, and sometimes difficult to achieve. For these reasons, efforts have been made to find ways in which the calibration from one instrument can be moved to another with minimal performance reduction. A slight shift in nomenclature from the common term calibration transfer to the term calibration transport is used here to help resolve the subtle difference between two means of moving a calibration from one instrument to another. The former term denotes a transfer procedure that includes mathematical manipulation of the calibration data via some determined transfer function, whereas the latter term does not. Todays generation of process and laboratory FTNIR analyzers is capable of not only achieving calibration transfer, but also calibration transport often without the need of slope or bias adjustments. Several studies are used to examine the boundaries of the extent to which calibration transport is achieved in the refining industry. Data collected on multiple on-line and laboratory FTNIR analyzers located in multiple countries are considered, and the ultimate limitations discussed.

Short-term land cover changes, such as forest fire scar and crop harvesting, can be detected by high temporal resolution satellite imagery like MODIS and AVHRR. Because these optical satellite images are often obscured by clouds, the static cloud-free composite methods (maximum NDVI, minblue, minVZA, etc.) has been used based on non-overlapping composite period (8-day, 16-day, or a month). Due to relatively long time lag between successive images, these methods are not suitable for observing short-term land cover changes in near-real time. In this study, we suggested a new dynamic cloud-free composite algorithm that uses cut-and-patch method of cloud-masked daily MODIS data using MOD35 products. Because this dynamic composite algorithm generates daily cloud-free MODIS images with the most recent information, it can be used to monitor short-term land cover changes in near-real time. The dynamic composite algorithm also provides information on the date of each pixel used in compositing, thereby makes accurately identify the date of short-term event.
Purpose: Preterm infants are at high risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed as a means of predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in this population. It is controversial whether diffuse excessive high signal intensity (DEHSI) represents damage to the white matter or delayed myelination in preterm infants. This study investigated MRI findings for predicting the severity of neurodevelopmental outcomes and assessing whether preterm infants with DEHSI near term-equivalent age have abnormal neurodevelopmental outcomes. Materials and Methods: Preterm infants (n = 64, gestational age at birth < 35 weeks) undergoing brain MRI near term-equivalent age and subsequent neurodevelopmental outcomes were evaluated between 18 and 24 months of age. The associations of MRI findings and the risk of severe cognitive delay, severe psychomotor delay, cerebral palsy (CP), and neurosensory impairment were analyzed. The associations of DEHSI with risks of severe cognitive delay, severe psychomotor delay, CP, and neurosensory impairment (hearing or visual impairment) were analyzed. Outcome data were evaluated by logistic regression and the Fisher's exact test. Results: There were significant associations between abnormal white matter findings and delayed mental development, delayed psychomotor development, neurosensory impairment, and presence of CP. The presence of DEHSI was not correlated with delayed neurodevelopmental outcomes or presence of CP. In multivariate logistic regression analyses, cystic encephalomalacia, punctate lesion, loss of white matter volume and ventricular dilation were significantly associated with CP. Conclusion: Abnormal MRI findings near term-equivalent age in preterm infants predict adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. No significant association between DEHSI and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes was demonstrated.
We analyzed the terminology and classification related to the risk management of radiation treatment overseas to establish the terminology and classification system for Korea. This study investigated the terminology and classification for radiotherapy risk management through overseas research materials from related organizations and associations, including the IAEA, WHO, British group, EC, and AAPM. Overseas risk management commonly uses the terms "near miss", "incident", and "adverse event", classified according to the degree of severity. However, several organizations have ambiguous terminologies. They use the term "near miss" for events such as a near event, close call, and good catch; the term "incident" for an event; and the term "adverse event" for the likes of an accident and an event. In addition, different organizations use different classifications: a "near miss" is generally classified as "incident" in most cases but not classified as such in BIR et al. Confusion might also be caused by the disunity of the terminology and classification, and by the ambiguity of definitions. Patient safety management of medical institutions in Korea uses the terms "near miss", "adverse event", and "sentinel event", which it classifies into eight levels according to the severity of risk to the patient. Therefore, the terminology and classification for radiotherapy risk management based on the patient safety management of medical institutions in Korea will help in improving the safety and quality of radiotherapy.
Purpose - Based on the funding-horizon theory, this study aims to test the effects of cash needs and the persistence of external funding needs on firms' external financing. Design/methodology/approach - Financial data of Korean listed companies were collected from DataGuide. Immediate and near-term cash shortfalls are defined using the methodology of Haung and Ritter (2021). We estimate multinomial logit regressions for the financing choice. Findings - First, all three cash depletion variables used in our study increase the likelihood of external financing. Second, firms prefer to issue debt to meet immediate spending and equity to meet long-lived cash needs. Third, this effect is more pronounced for high R&D firms. Fourth, chaebol firms with internal capital markets defer raising external capital for immediate and near-term cash needs. Research implications or Originality - This paper provide empirical evidence that immediate and near-term cash needs induce external financing, and the persistence of cash needs affects the choice between debt and equity, the finding which is consistent with the funding-horizon theory of financing decisions. Being the first paper to test the funding-horizon theory using Korean data, this paper contributes to the literature on the capital structure of Korean firms.

A second moment turbulent closure for the turbulent heat flux near a wall is developed by modification of model constants in pressure interaction term as the variables of the turbulent Reynolds number using the universal properties of turbulent heat flux near the wall. The present model shows that model constant for the wall reflection term in pressure interaction is most important in modelling of the near wall heat flux. Fully developed pipe flows with constant wall heat flux are tested to validate the proposed model. In most of calculation region, the predicted turbulent properties agree better with the experimetal data than the results from standard algebraic heat flux model which use the uniform model constants.

A theoretical study on the pressure fluctuation induced by a propeller was carried out in this study. The main objective of this study is to analyze the source mechanism of the pressure fluctuation induced by propeller sheet cavitation. To analyze the pressure fluctuation induced by propeller sheet cavitation, modern acoustic theory was applied. Governing equation of pressure fluctuation induced by sheet cavitation was derived using Ffowcs Williams proposed time domain acoustic approaches. Several factors affecting pressure fluctuation were analyzed based on the derived governing equation. Pressure fluctuation result was represented by combined results of the far field term and near field term. Finally, the physical mechanism of pressure fluctuation at the blade rate frequency was analyzed using numerically generated cavitation volume variation.
