The objective of this study is to develop a method to generate micro-relief digital elevation model (DEM) data of the tidal mudflats using multi-temporal Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data. Field spectroscopy measurements showed that reflectance of the exposed mudflat, shallow turbid water, and normal coastal water varied by TM band wavelength. Two sets of DEM data of the inter-tidal mudflat area were generated by interpolating several waterlines extracted from multi-temporal TM data acquired at different sea levels. The waterline appearing in the near-infrared band was different from the one in the middle-infrared band. It was found that the waterline in TM band 4 image was the boundary between the shallow turbid water and normal coastal water and used as a second contour line having 50cm water depth in the study area. DEM data generated by using both TM bands 4 and 5 rendered more detailed topographic relief as compared to the one made by using TM band 5 alone.
Korea Astronomy Observatory(KAO) has been developing the KAONICS, KAO Near-Infrared Camera System, which will be used for near-infrared observations in the ground-based telescopes of Korea. As a phase-A study for this work, we investigated observational environments at the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory(SOAO) and the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory(BOAO) quantitatively. In the J, H, K, and L bands, atmospheric transmission was calculated mainly depending on the PWV(Precipitable Water Vapour), and limiting magnitudes were computed for the SOAO and the BOAO, respectively. We conclude that these observatories have similar observing capabilities and domestic observations are possible in near-infrared.
We present near-infrared light curves of HBC 722 after its the September 2010 outburst. We have been monitoring its near-infrared light curves since November 2010 with Korean Astronomy and Space Science Institute Infrared Camera System (KASINICS). HBC 722 exhibits large changes in optical and near-infrared brightness since its outburst. The J, H, and $K_s$ light curves over about 2.5 years show that in all observed bands HBC 722 progressively became fainter until around April 2011, down to J ~10.7, H ~9.9, $K_s$ ~9.3, but it is getting brighter again. Large scatter in the obtained light curve prevents us from finding whether there is any short timescale variation as reported in other optical observations. The near-infrared color of HBC 722 is becoming bluer since its outburst. The pre-outburst Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of HBC 722 is consistent with that of a slightly reddened Class II YSO with the exception of the extraordinary IR-excess in the far-infrared region.

We present the result of near-infrared (near-IR) imaging polarimetry of star-forming regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We compiled near-IR photometric and polarimetric data of N159/160 regions. The photometric and polarimetric data were simultaneously obtained in J, H, and Ks bands using SIRPOL, an imaging polarimeter of the InfraRed Survey Facility (IRSF), in 2007 February. We measured Stokes parameters of point-like sources to derive their degree of polarization and polarization position angles. In this poster, we present polarization properties of these star-forming regions. We also discuss the polarization structure in these regions compared with mid-infrared dust emission structure from the Spitzer SAGE survey.
The zodiacal light emission is the thermal emission from the interplanetary dust and the dominant diffuse radiation in the mid- to far-infrared wavelength region. Even in the far-infrared, the contribution of the zodiacal emission is not negligible at the region near the ecliptic plane. The AKARI far-infrared all-sky survey covered 97% of the whole sky in four photometric bands with band central wavelengths of 65, 90, 140, and $160{\mu}m$. AKARI detected the small-scale structure of the zodiacal dust cloud, such as the asteroidal dust bands and the circumsolar ring, in far-infrared wavelength region. Although the most part of the zodiacal light structure in the AKARI far-infrared all-sky image can be well reproduced with the DIRBE zodiacal light model, there are discrepancies in the small-scale structures. In particular, the intensity and the ecliptic latitude of the peak position of the asteroidal dust bands cannot be reproduced precisely with the DIRBE models. The AKARI observational data during more than one year has advantages over the 10-month DIRBE data in modeling the full-sky zodiacal dust cloud. The resulting small-scale zodiacal light structure template has been used to subtract the zodiacal light from the AKARI all-sky maps.

We present the high-resolution near-infrared spectra of standard stars observed with Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS). IGRINS covers the full spectral range of H and K bands simultaneously with a high spectral resolution (R=40,000), revealing many previously undetected and/or unknown lines. In this work, we present preliminary results of spectroscopic diagnostics for stellar physical parameters. Our ultimate goal is to provide a library of near-infrared spectra of standard stars, which covers all spectral types and luminosity classes, with a high-resolution and high signal to noise ratio ($SNR{\geq}200$).
We present the design, expected performance, and current status of the wide field near-infrared camera (OAOWFC) now being developed at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, NAOJ, NINS. OAOWFC is a near-infrared survey telescope whose effective aperture is 91cm. It works at Y, J, H, and $K_s$ bands and is dedicated to the survey of long period variable stars in the Galactic plane. The field of view is $0.95 {\times} 0.95 deg^2$ which is covered by one HAWAII-2 RG detector of 2048 ${\times}$ 2048 pixels with the pixel size of $18.5 {\mu}m\;{\times}\;18.5{\mu}m$, that results in the sampling pitch of 1.6 arcsec/pixel. OAOWFC can sweep the area of $840 deg^2$ every 3 weeks, attaining a limiting magnitude of 13 in $K_s$ band. It allows us to observe long period variables embedded in the Galactic plane where interstellar extinction is severe in optical.

We analyze the behaviors of reddening vectors in the Spitzer/IRAC photometric system for young stellar objects (YSOs) of different evolutionary stages, masses, and inclinations using the model spectral energy distributions (SED) by Robitaille et al. As reported in visible and near-infrared photometric systems, the magnitudes and colors of YSOs show strong SED dependence and non-linearity. In the [8.0] band where the 9.7 ${\mu}m$ interstellar silicate feature plays a significant role in extinction, the effective wavelength shifts "bluewards", not "redwards" as in most, if not all, optical and infrared bands including the other three IRAC bands, as the extinction in Ks increases up to ~2 mag, and then asymptotically reaches a constant value as the extinction further increases. This "bluening" is seen when the YSO is in later evolutionary stage and/or has a stellar mass of ~2 $M_{\odot}$ or greater. In many cases, the reddening vectors in the IRAC color-color diagrams are prominently curved, and in some extreme cases, the colors involving the [8.0] band becomes bluer in the beginning and then becomes redder later as the amount of extinction increases. We also present our "suggested" extinction laws employing the combination of a broken-power law and the 9.7 ${\mu}m$ silicate feature, which well reproduce the extinction behaviors observed in the IRAC bands.
The $JHK_S$ magnitudes of the red giant branch tip (TRGB) and the distance moduli of the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613 have been determined from the near-infrared luminosity functions (LFs) of the resolved stars in the galaxy. Applying a Savitzky-Golay filtering, we derived the second derivatives of the LFs, and estimated the apparent magnitudes of the TRGB as $m_J\;=\;19.1$, $m_H\;=\;18.4$, and $m_{Ks}\;=\;18.0$. The mean values of the theoretical absolute magnitudes of the TRGB were measured by using the Yonsei-Yale isochrones with a metallicity range of -2.1 < [Fe/H] < -0.5 and age of 12 Gyr. The derived values of near-infrared TRGB distance moduli for IC 1613 are (m - M) = $24.12{\pm}0.25$, $24.20{\pm}0.44$, and $24.00{\pm}0.52$ for J, H, and $K_S$ bands, respectively.

Near infrared blocking function in energy saving window glass is required. The design, deposition and characteristics of optical thin films for reflection of near-infrared light were studied. The optical thin film is designed as laminated film structure with low refractive index film and high index film. Deposition experiments of $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ thin films with designed structure using the RF sputtering method were carried out. The characteristics of the thin film with deposition conditions were analyzed. High-refractive-index thin film of $TiO_2$/low refractive-index thin film of $SiO_2$ and high-refractive-index thin film of $TiO_2$ structure for reflection of near-infrared light was designed to be simulated. Results of simulation showed reflectance of 30% or more in the range from 930nm to 1682nm. Triple layer thin films fabricated with simulated results showed wavelength bands from 930nm to 1525nm for the reflectance of 33% or more.
