In SIL-based NFR servo systems, the residual error and the overshoot that are occurred in the process of the modes-witching servo which consists of approach, gap-control modes, and safety mode are reduced by using PID controller. However, the design method of conventional PID controller is not sufficient for the stable air gap control system. Therefore, the optimal PID controller using LQR manner is more useful to find the designed parameters of PID controller. In this paper, we show that the performance of the optimal PID controller is better than that of the lead-lag controller.

We report the readout stability improvement results of super-resolution near field structure (Super-RENS) writeonce read-many (WORM) disk at a blue laser optical system. (Laser wavelength 405nm, numerical aperture 0.85) By using diffusion barrier structure (GeSbTe sandwiched by GeN) and high transition temperature recording material ($BaTiO_3$), material diffusion of phase change layer and recording mark degradation were greatly improved during high power (Pr=2.0mW) readout process up to $1{\times}10^5$ times.
There are two important trends in the modern information society, including digital networking and ubiquitous environment. Thus it is strongly required to develop new information storage devices such as high density storages to match the increased data capacity and small size storage devices to be applied to the mobile multimedia electronics. So far, many approaches have been studied for the high density memory, including the holographic memory, super-RENS and near-field recording using solid immersion lens (SIL) or nano-probe for the ODD (Optical Disk Drive) system, and the perpendicular magnetic recording and heat-assisted magnetic recording for the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) system. In addition, new mobile storage devices have been prepared using 0.85" HDD and 30mm ODD systems from a lot of foreign and domestic companies and institutes. In this paper, the recent technology trend for the next generation information storage system is summarized to offer a research motivation and encouragement to new researchers in this field with an emphasis on the technical issues of the increase of data capacity and decrease of device size.
Objective : Somatosensory evoked potentials(SSEPs) have been used widely both experimentally and clinically to monitor the function of central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Studies of SSEPs have reported the various recording techniques and patterns of SSEP. The previous SSEP studies used scalp recording electrodes, showed mean vector potentials which included relatively constant brainstem potentials(far-field potentials) and unstable thalamocortical pathway potentials(near-field potentials). Even in invasive SSEP recording methods, thalamocortical potentials were variable according to the kinds, depths, and distance of two electrodes. So they were regarded improper method for monitoring of upper level of brainstem. The present study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of somatosensory evoked field potentials(SSEFPs) of the cerebral cortex that evoked by hindlimb stimulation using ball electrode and the pathways of SSEFP by recording the potentials simultaneously in the cortex, VPL nucleus of thalamus, and nucleus gracilis. Methods : In the first experiment, a specially designed recording electrode was inserted into the cerebral cortex perpendicular to the cortical surface in order to recording the constant cortical field potentials and SSEFPs mapped from different areas of somatosensory cortex were analyzed. In the second experiment, SSEPs were recorded in the ipsilateral nucleus gracilis, the contralateral ventroposterolateral thalamic nucleus(VPL), and the cerebral cortex along the conduction pathway of somatosensory information. Results : In the first experiment, we could constantly obtain the SSEFPs in cerebral cortex following the transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the hind limb, and it revealed that the first large positive and following negative waves were largest at the 2mm posterior and 2mm lateral to the bregma in the contralateral somatosensory cortex. The second experiment showed that the SSEPs were conducted by way of posterior column somatosensory pathway and thalamocortical pathway and that specific patterns of the SSEPs were recorded from the nucleus gracilis, VPL, and cerebral cortex. Conclusion : The specially designed recording electrode was found to be very useful in recording the localized SSEFPs and the transcutaneous electrical stimulation using ball electrode was effective in evoking SSEPs. The characteristic shapes, latencies, and conduction velocities of each potentials are expected to be used the fundamental data for the future study of brain functions, including the hydrocephalus model, middle cerebral artery ischemia model, and so forth.
Identification method is formulated to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings under NFR (Near Field Recording) sliders. Using dynamic analysis, impulse responses and frequency response functions of NFR sliders are obtained on numerical non-linear models including rigid motion of slider and fluid motion of air bearing under the slider. System parameters are identified by modal analysis method and instrumental variable method. The identified system parameters of sliders are utilized to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings.
There has been studied flow to minimize the spot size to increase data capacity. Optical data storage devices are being developed near practical limits with wavelength and NA of 405nm and 0.85. There has been studied many types of next generation storage devices such as blu-ray multilayer system, probe based data storage and holographic data storage. Among these data storage devices, solid immersion lens(SIL) based near field recording (NFR) has been widely studied. In this system, SIL is the key component that focuses the laser beam with a very small size which enables ultra high data capacity. Therefore, optical performance evaluation system is required for SIL assembly. In this dissertation, a simple and accurate SIL assembly measurement method is proposed with wedge plate lateral shearing interferometer(LSI). Wedge plate LSI is cheaper than commercialized interferometer, robust to the vibration and the moving distance for phase shifting is large that is order of micrometer. We designed the thickness, wedge angle, material, surface quality and wavelength of wedge plate as 1mm, 0.02degree, fused silica, lamda/10(10-5) and 405nm, respectively. Also, we confirmed simulation and experimental results with quantitative analysis. This simple wedge plate LSI can be applied to different types of SIL such as solid immersion mirror(SIM), hemispherical, super-hemispherical and elliptical SIL.
In this study, the shape of suspension load beam for NFR(Near Field Recording) was proposed, which was designed using Topology optimization based on Homogenization method. Lens and Micro-mirror are attached to the end of the suspension load beam for collection and control the light, which increasing the system mass. Increment of the system mass cause to decrease the tracking stiffness mode frequency. (omitted)
For higher recording density in optical data storage, near field optics is being actively researched as one of the promising alternatives. But the tight assembling tolerance in NFR is one of big barriers to overcome for the realization of it. In this paper, the tolerances in assembling optic components of NFR system are analyzed. Some of key tolerances can be loosened by the optimization of objective lens design. But one of them become too tight by the optimization and should be controlled by other means. One of possible methods to control the tolerance is discussed.
