Recently, various recording technologies are studied for optical data storage. After standardization of BD (Blue-ray Disc) and HD-DVD (High-Definition Digital Versatile Disc), the industry is looking for a suitable technology for next generation optical data storage. Super-RENS (Super-resolution near field structure) technique, which is capable of compatibility with other systems, is one of next optical data storage. In this paper, we analyze the nonlinearity of Super-RENS read-out signal through the bicoherence test, which uses HOS (Higher-Order Statistics) and apply neural networks for nonlinear modeling. The model structure considered in this paper is the NARX (Nonlinear AutoRegressive eXogenous) model. The experiment results indicate that the read-out signals have nonlinear characteristics. In addition, it verified the possibility that neural networks can be utilized for nonlinear modeling of Super-RENS systems.
It is crucial to predict the variabilities of the near-earth space environment associated with the solar activity, which cause enormous socio-economic impacts on mankind. The geomagnetic storm prediction scheme adopted in this study is designed to predict such variabilities in terms of the geomagnetic indices, AE and Dst, the cross-polar cap potential difference, the energy dissipation rate over the polar ionosphere and associated temperature increase in the thermosphere. The prediction code consists of two parts; prediction of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field based upon actual flare observations and estimation of various electrodynamic quantities mentioned above from the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling function 'epsilon' which is derivable through the predicted solar wind parameters. As a test run, the magnetic storm that occurred in early November, 1993, is simulated and the results are compared with the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field measured by the Japanese satellite, Geotail, and the geomagnetic indices obtained from ground magnetic observatories. Although numerous aspects of the code are to be further improved, the comparison between the simulated results and the actual measurements encourages us to use this prediction scheme as the first appoximation in forecasting the disturbances of the near-earth space environment associated with solar flares.

This paper presents measurement results of transient impedance for small-sized ground electrodes in a discharge region of soil. For a realistic analysis of ionization characteristics near the ground electrode, three types of ground rod installed outdoors and high voltage impulse generator were used for injecting test current. From the analysis of response voltage and current flowing ground electrode to earth, it is verified that the ionization near the ground electrode contributes to reduction of ground impedance and limits the ground potential rise effectively in high resistivity soil. As a threshold electric field density for ionization is small in low resistivity soil, the shape of ground electrode rarely contributes to the transient impedance. And, from the experiment result with shape of ground electrode, the rod with needles is more effective to reduce the transient impedance than the plate electrode in the voltage range including with ionization regions of soil.

In this paper, a digital active phased array antenna is briefly introduced and beam forming method for a dual-channel side-lobe blanking applied to blank the side-lobe of the main beam is described. Next, the antenna performance was verified from results of design and antenna near-field measurement for the antenna main beam and side-lobe blanking beam. Then, a single-channel side-lobe blanking beam forming method was proposed to reduce the number of channels than the existing system operating dual-channel side-lobe blanking beam and weight distribution for each element of the side-lobe blanking antenna was designed with the proposed method. Finally, the designed single-channel side-lobe blanking beam pattern and blanking ability were verified and compared with the dual-channel side-lobe blanking beam. In addition, by comparing/verifying the conventional dual-channel and the proposed single-channel side-lobe blanking beam patterns measured through the receiving near-field test of the digital active phased array antenna and their ability to blank side-lobe of the main beam, validity of the proposed method for forming single-channel side-lobe blanking beam was confirmed.

In this paper, the design, fabrication and verification steps of an electronically scanned array antenna(AESA) for a photonics-based Ku-band FMCW radar system is described. The presented system consists of a transmitter and a receiver respectively, which has a same antenna in the transceiver. The designed antenna has 2×8 array configuration and operates at Ku-band. The VSWR(Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) of each 16-radiators and the coupling power between radiators is measured. Also, in order to minimize the radar system damage because of handover power from the transmitter antenna to the receiver antenna when the transmitter works, the isolation between the transmitter antenna and the receiver antenna is optimized by test. As a result, beamwidth, side lobe level and beam steering characteristic are obtained by synthesizing each radiator pattern measurement data after each beam pattern of 16-radiators is measured in the near-field chamber.
The conventional reinforced earth retaining wall has the connector system to fix the reinforcement and block. However, this system defect may cause the crack of block and the rupture of reinforcement due to the stress concentration near the face of reinforced earth retaining wall. Hence, the new connector system which was able to allow the settlement of reinforcement was developed in this study and a test was carried out in the study area which is divided into the conventional reinforced earth retaining wall and reinforced Earth Retaining Wall driving the settlement. As the results of field monitoring in situ, the ratio of tensile force calculated at maximum value on contiguous portion of front block showed that the settlement type decreased the stress concentration near the face of front block greater than the conventional type.
Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of near-surface unconsolidated layers depends on the physical properties and water content of the unconsolidated layers. So far, many studies have been conducted on the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of near-surface unconsolidated layers. However, researches on hydraulic conductivity of unsaturated fractured rocks have been relatively rare. In relation to the construction of a low/intermediate level radioactive waste surface-disposal facility, this study compared and analyzed van Genuchten parameters (α, n) in the laboratory and the hydraulic conductivity obtained in field tests for fractured hornfels at a radioactive-waste disposal site of Korea. The relationship between the field hydraulic conductivity and van Genuchten parameters using data from the ten depth intervals of three boreholes resulted in that the correlation coefficient (R) between the hydraulic conductivity and the van Genuchten parameter α was 0.7607, showing positive correlation whereas the R between the hydraulic conductivity and the van Genuchten shape-defining parameter n was -0.8720, showing negative correlation. Hence, this study confirmed the relationship between the field hydraulic conductivity and the van Genuchten unsaturated functions for the unsaturated fractured hornfels.
Lower Ordovician rock samples were collected from 23 sites located at the Okcheon non-metamorphic zone, near Taeback and Yeongweol areas, southern part of the Korean Peninsula. A characteristic magnetic component was obtained from four sites. This stable direction ($Dm=-19.4^{\circ}$, $Im=24.1^{\circ}$) which is carried by hematite of very high temperature $679^{\circ}C$), successfully pass both of reversal test and paleopole reliability test, and is regarded as a primary direction. The remagnetized components can be divided into three on the basis of their characteristic directions and magnetic minerals. The first which is carried by hematite, magnetite and pyrrhotite, is widely found at the whole sites. It shows syn- or post-tectonic remagnetization according to strongly negative fold test and distribution between Mesozoic and present field directions. The second, in situ, is distinguishable from the present field direction. After bedding correction, it is identical to Late Triassic to Early Jurassic direction. Its magnetic carrier is considered to be a single component hematite, which may be acquired by pre-tectonic CRM in the Okcheon orogenic zone. The third, which is carried by magnetite and hematite, is characterized by stable reversed direction. These minerals may be acquired by the thermal or chemical process in unknown period. Paleopole position is $169.2^{\circ}E$ in longitude and $59.9^{\circ}S$ in latitude, which indicates that the study area was located at $12.6^{\circ}S$ in paleo-latitude and belonged to northern end of the Gondwana in Early Ordovician.
Investigations on simulated near-surface atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in an open-jet facility are carried out by conducting experimental tests on small-scale models of low-rise buildings. The objectives of the current study are: (1) to determine the optimal location of test buildings from the exit of the open-jet facility, and (2) to investigate the scale effect on the aerodynamic pressure characteristics. Based on the results, the newly built open-jet facility is well capable of producing mean wind speed and turbulence profiles representing open-terrain conditions. The results show that the proximity of the test model to the open-jet governs the length of the separation bubble as well as the peak roof pressures. However, test models placed at a horizontal distance of 2.5H (H is height of the wind field) from the exit of the open-jet, with a width that is half the width of the wind field and a length of 1H, have consistent mean and peak pressure coefficients when compared with available results from wind tunnel testing. In addition, testing models with as large as 16% blockage ratio is feasible within the open-jet facility. This reveals the importance of open-jet facilities as a robust tool to alleviate the scale restrictions involved in physical investigations of flow pattern around civil engineering structures. The results and findings of this study are useful for putting forward recommendations and guidelines for testing protocols at open-jet facilities, eventually helping the progress of enhanced standard provisions on the design of low-rise buildings for wind.
A horizontal drain method, which applies vacuum pressure at the end of a horizontal drain for discharging pore water, is used often for improving surface reclaimed clay in the field. In this study, to examine the effectiveness of improving consolidation or shear strength depends by varying vacuum pressure, laboratory chamber horizontal drain test using vacuum pressure is performed and the results is compared with that of self-weight consolidation. The results show that water content reduces with the increase of soil depth in case of self-weight consolidation, while it reduces near the horizontal drain and increases with the increase of the distance from the horizontal drain in case of applying vacuum pressure. The shear strength of dredged soil was improved as well, when the vacuum pressure is applied. The optimized consolidation was achieved at the vacuum pressure range of 30 to 50kPa in the laboratory box test of 50cm wide, considering the range of drain interval in the field was between 0.7 and 1.2m.
