  • In this study, a convergent heat treatment was performed in certain temperature regions in order to control the microstructures of Nd-rich phases and to reduce thermal stress on grain boundaries which could be caused during expansion and shrinkage of Nd-rich and $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phases. The difference of thermal expansion coefficient between $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ and Nd-rich phases is the mechanism for convergent heat treatment. The Nd-rich phases which were located in junctions could penetrate into the grain boundaries between $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phases due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient. Through the convergent heat treatment, the microcracks that were observed in cyclic heat treatment were not observed and coercivity was increased to 34.05 kOe at 8 cycles.

  • A new binder system and debinding process for low carbon residue in the injection molding of Nd(Fe, Co)B powder are investigated. In the injection molding of magnetic materials, it is demanded to reduce carbon residue which deteriorates their magnetic properties. The binder system developed is composed of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and polypropylene (PP). PEG was selected as a major binder is component to be extracted in a molecular state by solvent extraction in ethanol, which step would leave no residue. PP was selected as a minor binder component to be subsequently removed by thermolysis which step would leave carbon residue. The behaviors of solvent extraction with the variations of PEG molecular weight, temperature, and time were examined. The dependency of residual carbon content on thermolysis atmosphere was also studied. Opened pore channels introduced in a green body by the solvent extraction and microstructures of the sintered magnets were observed using SEM.

  • Effect of Cu content on microstructural and magnetic properties of a $(Nd_{26.06},Dy_{6.51})Fe_{bal.}$ $Cu_xB_{0.97}$(wt.%), (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) strip-cast was studied. The average inter-lamellar spacing in the free surface and wheel side of the strip cast increased as the Cu content increases. The grain uniformity, the grain alignment, and (00L) texture of the strip cast increased with Cu contents up to 0.4 wt.%. These microstructural changes were attributed to the decrease of the effective cooling rate of the melted alloy caused by the decrease of the melting temperature of resulting from Cu addition. Coercivity and remanence were increased because of the grain alignment and (00L) texture improvement with Cu contents up to 0.4 wt.%.

  • Recent developments in nanocrystalline and nanocomposite rare earth-transition metal magnets are reviewed and emphasis is placed on research work at IFW Dresden. Principal synthesis methods include high energy ball milling, melt spinning, mold casting and hydrogen assisted methods such as reactive milling and hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination. These techniques are applied to NdFeB-, PrFeB- and SmCo-type systems with the aim to produce high remanence magnets with high coercivity. Concepts of maximizing the energy density in nanostructured magnets by either inducing a texture via anisotropic HDDR or hot deformation or enhancing the remanence via magnetic exchange coupling are evaluated. With respect to high temperature applications melt spun $Sm(Co_{0.74}Fe_{0.1}Cu_{0.12}Zr_{0.04})_{7.5}$ ribbons were prepared, which showed coercivities of up to 0.53 T at 50$0^{\circ}C$. Partially amorphous $Nd_{60}Fe_xCo_{30-x}Al_{10}(0{\leq}x{\leq}30)$ alloys were prepared by copper mold casting. The effect of transition metal content on the glass-forming ability and the magnetic properties was investigated. The $Nd_{60}Co_{30}Al_{10}$ alloy exhibits an amorphous structure shown by the corresponding diffraction pattern. A small substitution of Co by 2.5 at.% Fe results In the formation of Fe-rich crystallites embedded in the Nd-rich amorphous matrix. The Fe-rich crystallites show hard magnetic behaviour at room temperature with a coercivity value of about 0.4 T, relatively low saturation magnetization and a Curie temperature of 500 K.

  • [ $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ ]permanent magnetic powders ($_iH_c$ = 9.2 kOe, $B_r$ = 12.2 kG) were produced by HDDR process. Their coercivity was enhanced to 12.6 kOe through the grain boundary diffusion process with dysprosium hydride ($DyH_x$). $DyH_x$ diffusion process was optimized through rotating diffusion process, resulting in distinct phases rich in Nd and Dy observable by field emission scanning microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The mechanism of coercivity enhancement that resulted in restrain the coupling effect between $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ grains is also discussed.

  • In order to increase the coercivity of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B sintered magnets without much reduction of remanence, small amount of Dy compounds such as $Dy_2O_3$ and $DyF_3$ was mixed with (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B powder. After mixing, the coercivity of (Nd, Dy)-Fe-B sintered magnets apparently increased with the increase of Dy compound in the mixture. Addition of $DyF_3$ was more effective than $Dy_2O_3$ for the improvement of coercivity. Reduction of the remanence by the addition of Dy compound, however, was larger than expected mostly due to unresolved coarse Dy compound in the magnet. EPMA analysis revealed that Dy was diffused throughout the grains in the magnet mixed with $DyF_3$ whereas Dy was rather concentrated around grain boundaries in the magnet mixed with $Dy_2O_3$.

  • Nanostructed high energy Nd-Fe-B based bulk magnet can be prepared by hot-working process (hot press and die-upset) from melt-spun amorphous or nanocrystalline powder.[1] Recently, we have investigated a modified method, current-applied pressure-assisted (CAPA) process, to produce nanocrystalline isotropic and anisotropic NdFeB magnets. The process consists of current-applied pressing the melt-spun powders to obtain isotropic precursor subsequent current-applied deforming the precursor to obtain textured magnet.[2-3] (omitted)

  • The effects of disk surface velocity on the microstructures and magnetic properties of ${(Nd_{0.8}Dy_{0.2})}_{12}Fe_{80}B_8$ melt-spun ribbons were investigated. From the X-ray diffraction results. it is confirmed that the lower the surface velocity ($V_{s}$), the better the orientation of c-axis normal to the ribbon plane. The results of magnetic property measurements for the powder solidfied in magnetic field showed that the highest remanence was obtained from the alloy quenched at medium velocity of $V_{s}=14.6m/s$. The remanence of the powder solidfied in magenetic field was about 10 % higher than that of the powder solidfied in non-magnetic field.
