  • The stability of PF 6-7 has been studied according to the transient analysis code TOKSCPF and quench analysis code QSAIT. We compare the stability and temperature rise with various Cu/SC ratios of 2.8 and 3.5 under the KSTAR normal operating conditions. It shows that the Cu/SC ratio has an influence on the quench propagation and stability margin. In transient operating condition, the Cu/SC ratio weakly influences on the temperature rise in PF magnet.

  • Research and development on superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system have been done to realize efficient electric power management for several decades. Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) has developed a 3MJ/750kV A SMES system to improve power quality in sensitive electric loads. It consists of an IGBT based power converter, NbTi mixed matrix Rutherford cable superconducting magnet, and a cryostat with HTS current leads. A computer code was developed to find the parameters of the SMES magnet which has minimum amount of superconductors for the same stored energy, and the 3MJ SMES magnet was designed based upon that. This paper describes the fabrication and experimental results of a 3MJ/750kV A SMES system.

  • The KSTAR(Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) superconducting magnet system consist of 16 TF(Toroidal Field) and 14 PF(Poloidal Field) coils. Internally-cooled cabled superconductors will be used for the magnet system. The magnet system adopt a superconducting CICC (Cable-In-Conduit Conductor) type. The KSTAR PF 6, 7 CICCs use NbTi Superconducting cable with stainless steel 316LN conduit while the other PF CICC use Incoloy 908 conduit. For the fabrication of PF CICC, superconducting cables have been fabricated and the cable has the diameter of 22.3mm. A continuous CICC jacketing system is developed for the CICC jacketing and the jacketing system uses the tube-mill process, which consists of forming, welding, sizing and squaring procedures. The cabling and the jacketing process is described. The welding condition and design specification of CICCs are also discussed. The fabrication results including the geometrical specification and the void fraction will be discussed.

  • The superconducting coil system is one of the most important components in Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR), which has been operated since 2008. $Nb_3Sn$ and NbTi superconductors are being used for cable-in-conduit conductors (CICCs) of the KSTAR toroidal field (TF) and poloidal field (PF) coils. The CICCs are cooled by forced-flow supercritical helium about 4.5 K. The temperature, pressure and mass flow rate of the supercritical helium in the CICCs are interacting with each other during the operation of the coils. The complicate behaviors of the supercritical helium have an effect on the operation and the efficiency of the helium refrigeration system (HRS) by means of, for instance, pressure drop. The hydraulic characteristics of the supercritical helium have been monitored while the TF coils have stably achieved the full current of 35 kA. In other hands, the PF coils have been operated with various pulsed or bipolar mode, so the drastic changes happen in view of hydraulics. The heat load including AC loss on the coils has been analyzed according to the measurement. These activities are important to estimate the temperature margin in various PF operation conditions. In this paper, the latest hydraulic behaviors of PF coils during KSTAR operation are presented.
