Position Estimation Using Neural Network for Navigation of Wheeled Mobile Robot (WMR) in a Corridor

  • This paper describes position estimation algorithm using neural network for the navigation of the vision-based wheeled mobile robot (WMR) in a corridor with taking ceiling lamps as landmark. From images of a corridor the lamp's line on the ceiling in corridor has a specific slope to the lateral position of the WMR. The vanishing point produced by the lamp's line also has a specific position to the orientation of WMR. The ceiling lamps have a limited size and shape like a circle in image. Simple image processing algorithms are used to extract lamps from the corridor image. Then the lamp's line and vanishing point's position are defined and calculated at known position of WMR in a corridor. To estimate the lateral position and orientation of WMR from an image, the relationship between the position of WMR and the features of ceiling lamps have to be defined. But it is hard because of nonlinearity. Therefore, data set between position of WMR and features of lamps are configured. Neural network are composed and learned with data set. Back propagation algorithm(BPN) is used for learning. And it is applied in navigation of WMR in a corridor.

  • The position fixing is the first essential in any offshore activity. At sea, position is almost always related to fixed points on land. The traditional method of the position fixing of a vessel is by double horizontal sextant angles observed between three fixed stations, plotted as a graphical resection using station pointers. Of recent, offshore fixing progresses in simple object of navigation and fishery, and it is tending to use and develop ocean and coast compositly. Therefore, we compared and analyzed deviation of fixed point for more accurate offshore fixing. This paper used only navigation instruments such as NNSS, Loran-C, Omega involved in long range and world wide among the methods of E. P. F. (Electromagnetic Position Fixing).

  • This paper deals with ship's track keeping methods which is crucial part of automatic navigation control systems. In this paper, we mainly discuss the performance of different guidance methods including way point guidance, enclosure-based steering guidance and lookahead-based steering guidance system. As a controller, a PID control system is employed to control ship's rudder angle during track-keeping. Finally, the performance of three methods are discussed through some simulation results.

  • In this study, a feature-points-tracking algorithm is suggested using a particle filter for vision based navigation system. By applying a dynamic model of the feature point, the tracking performance is increased in high dynamic condition, whereas a conventional KLT (Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi) cannot give a solution. Futhermore, the particle filter is introduced to cope with irregular characteristics of vision data. Post-processing of recorded vision data shows that the tracking performance of suggested algorithm is more robust than that of KLT in high dynamic condition.

  • Vehicle navigation systems employ a certain route planning algorithm that provides the shortest path between the starting point and the destination point. The performance of a given route planning algorithm is measured through the degree of optimal route selection and the time cost to complete searching an optimal path. In this paper, various route planning algorithms are evaluated through computer simulation based on a real digital map database. Among those algorithms evaluated in this paper, the Modified Bi-directional A${\ast}$ algorithm is found to be the best algorithm for use in vehicle navigation systems.

  • In this paper, we developed the prototype of Car Navigation Information System which uses GPS to determine the current location. Car Navigation Information System is the one which can determine and display the current location and direction through the display monitor, search the destination point, calculate and check out the shortest path to the destination. The system we developed can determine the current location using GPS data, search the destination point in various ways, calculate the shortest path, serve the driver all the above mentioned data, and display the raster and vector data. To testify the system, we made the vectorized data about Taejeon area. Then we testified the system performance by installing the system to the notebook computer.

  • Unmanned ground vehicle for facility protection mostly uses model of territory for autonomous navigation. However, modeling of territory using several sensors is highly time consuming and sometimes inefficient for road application. Therefore, an estimation of drivable path based on features of road is required for high speed autonomous navigation on road. In this paper, an estimation method of drivable path using camera and 2D laser rangefinder is proposed. First, a vanishing point is estimated based on image data from CCD camera. Second, a road width is estimated based on range data from 2D laser rangefinder. Finally, the drivable path is estimated by fusing the vanishing point and the road width. The proposed method is tested on both well-structured road and unpaved road like cross-country situation.

Analysis of GNSS PPP Positioning Errors Due to Strong Geomagnetic Storm on May 11, 2024 (2024년 5월 11일 강한 지자기 폭풍에 의한 GNSS PPP 측위 오차 분석)

  • On May 11, 2024, there was a strong solar flare explosion. A powerful geomagnetic storm triggered by a solar flare caused a major ionospheric disturbance over the Korean Peninsula. When a geomagnetic storm occurred, an abnormal change in vertical total electron content (VTEC) values was detected at all Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations in the Korean Peninsula. In addition, we performed GNSS precise point positioning (PPP) processing using observations from the SBAO and MKPO stations. We found that the up-directional position error increased significantly in both stations at around 17:00 UT on the day of year (DOY) 132, 2024. At that point, the root mean square (RMS) values for all position errors (East, North, and Up) increased compared to other dates. Due to very high noise, the L1 signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values of QZSS pseudo-random noise (PRN) 07 dropped to about 25 dB. As a result, we suggest that the strong geomagnetic storm increased the GNSS PPP position errors in the Korean Peninsula.

  • Nowadays it is necessary to manage the road system effectively because of the explosive increment of vehicle and goods. To resolve this problems through the fast upgrade of information about position and time of moving vehicle, the combined navigation system using GPS and complementary navigation system, i.e. INS, DR, etc. has been used. Although GPS is popular for the vehicle navigation system, this is not useful for the kinematic positioning of the vehicles in the urban canyon because of its few satellites. Therefore, this study deals with the kinematic positioning of the vehicles with GPS CORS to GPS navigation. For this, first the static single point positioning of GPS and GPS for reference station was performed to evaluate the accuracy of GPS positioning. Next, in the post-processed, the DGPS (Differential GPS) was performed for the kinematic positioning of the vehicles. So, it is expected that GPS CORS can be applicable to the control of traffic flow, the effective management of road system, and the development of ITS and it is regarded that the combined navigation system of vehicles with GPS, INS, and DR, etc. should be studied constantly.

Assessment of Safe Navigation Including the Effect of Ship-Ship Interaction in Restricted Waterways

  • This paper is mainly concerned with the assessment of safe navigation between ships moving each other in restricted waterways. The numerical simulation of manoeuvring motion was conducted parametrically to propose an appropriate safe speed and distance, which is required to avoid sea accident under the different conditions, such as ship-velocity ratios, ship-length ratios, separation and stagger between ships. As for the calculation parameters, the ratios of velocity difference between two ships were considered as 0.6, 1.2, 1.5 and the ones of ship-length difference were regarded were regarded as 0.5, 1.0, 1.18. From the inspection of this investigation, it indicates the following result. Firstly, the separation between ships is more needed for the small vessel, compared to the large vessel. Secondly, the lateral distance between ships is necessarily required for the velocity ration of 1.2, compared to the cases of 0.6 and 1.5. The manoeuvring characteristics based on this investigation will be very useful for keeping the safety of navigation from the practical point of ships design and traffic control in confined water.
